    <span><h3><span>Overall Series Description:</span></h3>
    <p><span>The </span><span>Building Bridges Across Difference: A Dialogue for Every Day </span><span>series equips faculty, staff, and students with practical tools to foster connection and understanding across differences in today’s polarized climate. Grounded in the Center for Social Justice Dialogue's commitment to shared power and inclusive practices, this series provides strategies to build trust, navigate challenging and emotionally charged moments, and create environments that encourage community and mutual respect. By embracing intergroup dialogue practices daily, participants will enhance their ability to inspire critical self-reflection, cultural storytelling, generous listening, and loving accountability.</span></p>
    <p><strong>All sessions will take place on Wednesdays from 11:30 - 1:30 pm and will be held VIRTUALLY.</strong></p>

Participants will explore strategies to establish trust, build relationships across difference, and create inclusive norms. Drawing on principles of circle pedagogy and shared power, attendees will learn how to set intentions that invite curiosity and co-create a sense of belonging amongst diverse groups.</span></p>

Through case studies and interactive practice, attendees will strengthen their ability to hold space for difficult dialogues and navigate identity-based differences with empathy, clarity, and compassion.</span></p>

<Title>Spring 2025 Undergraduate Data Science Scholars</Title>

    <div>We are pleased to announce the Undergraduate Data Science Scholars (DSS) program for supporting students in<strong> Spring 2025.</strong> The DSS program welcomes undergraduate scholars from multiple disciplines including non-STEM majors, who will examine all aspects of data and its impact on society. This year scholars will have the opportunity to be teaching fellows AND/OR research fellows. Scholars will be able to work on research projects in Climate Science, Deepfake detection, and other data science-related projects.</div>
    <div><span>Students selected through this effort will be part of the Data Science Scholars program, which will be run in partnership with the <a href="https://cwit.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Women in Technology (CWIT),</a> the<a href="https://informationsystems.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Information Systems Department (IS)</a>, and the <a href="https://socialscience.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3).</a> Selected scholars will be assigned to respective affiliations (CWIT/IS or CS3) depending on the student major, and the scholars' expectations per affiliation are as follows:</span></div>

    <div><strong>Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) Responsibilities:</strong></div>
    <div><span><em>Research Fellows</em></span></div>
    <div><span>● Scholars who will work as research fellows, will work on a supervised research project and be mentored by faculty. Scholars will be paid <strong>$20.00/hour for specific tasks, for 5 - 10 hours per week.</strong></span></div>
    <div><span>● Scholars will attend at least two events in Spring 2025 and/or participate in research initiatives and professional development for their leadership growth and mentoring. Mentors will coordinate this at CS3.</span></div>
    <div><span>● Scholars will also be expected to attend<strong> one mentoring meeting</strong> with the faculty.</span></div>
    <div><span><br></span></div>
    <div><span><strong>Background and Skills:</strong></span></div>
    <div><span>ALL applicants should have knowledge in <strong>AT LEAST ONE</strong> of the following:</span></div>
    <div><span>● Analysis of social, behavioral, economic, or geographic data</span></div>
    <div><span>● Python <strong>or</strong> one of the data science tools and/or languages (such as R, Rapid Miner, Weka, Orange, Knime, ML on cloud computing)</span></div>
    <div><span>● Jupyter Notebooks with Python or taken IS 296 in a prior semester.</span></div>

    <p><em>The IMET Angel Investors Program led by Mike and Trish Davis have been a critical asset to IMET’s research program, thanks to the group’s funding for over five years. The IMET Angel Investors provide funding for early- stage scientific research that would likely not otherwise occur and encourage innovative solutions and methods that lead to the advancement of marine and environmental research in Maryland with a focus on Chesapeake Bay restoration and sustainability.</em></p>
    <p><em>This year, the IMET angel investors made the group’s largest commitment to date, giving a wonderful opportunity to fund four projects for 2024 at $100,000 each. </em></p>

    <p><span><u>Project Title: Evolving Microalgae to Reduce Carbon Dioxide Emission and Nutrient Runoff into the Chesapeake Bay</u></span><br><br><span>Principal Investigator: Dr. Yantao Li</span></p>
    <p><span>In Maryland, there is a growing concern for the rising sea levels and extreme increases in temperature. </span>Have you noticed that our summers are getting hotter too?<span>  Climate change is linked to increasing CO₂ concentrations in the atmosphere and pose a significant risk to ecosystems and human health. Another environmental challenge in Maryland is that harmful nutrient runoff from farming fuels pollution that triggers harmful algal blooms in the Chesapeake Bay. Yantao Li’s project tackles both of these challenges by improving the ability of the microalga </span>Nannochloropsis oceanica IMET1<span> to capture CO₂ from power plant emissions and to absorb a higher amount of harmful nutrients from manure wastewater.</span></p>
    <p><span>Dr. Li’s team will use Adaptive Lab Evolution (ALE) to enhance </span>Nannochloropsis<span> to grow at higher CO₂ levels and manure wastewater conditions, enhancing growth rates and nutrient absorption by up to 40%. Because of the IMET Angel Investors, Dr. Li can leverage further funding opportunities to expand this innovative solution.</span></p>

    <p><span><u>Project Title: Bypassing Blue Crab Natural Mortality for Profit and Conservation</u></span></p>
    <p><span>Principal Investigator: Dr. Eric Schott</span></p>
    <p><span>The Chesapeake Bay has experienced a decline in soft crab production. Soft shell crab production has been a longstanding critical economic and cultural activity in the Chesapeake Bay. In recent years, bay watermen have been facing economic threats of crab mortality ranging from invasive species to crab disease. Dr. Schott seeks to create an alternative process for local economic sustainability to increase soft crab yields by cultivating juvenile crabs collected from the lower Bay, bypassing the high natural mortality that limits their survival to adulthood. The research will develop and test methods to grow these juvenile crabs in individual, biofouling-covered cages that utilize naturally occurring forage, aiming to reduce feed costs and create a sustainable production model that offers an alternative to wild harvesting for watermen. </span></p>
    <p><span>Success in this initiative could foster economic resilience for Chesapeake watermen and offer a modernized pathway for sustainable aquaculture in the region.</span></p>

    <p><span><u>Project Title: Bacterial Functions Linked to Success in Juvenile Oysters</u></span></p>
    <p><span>Principal Investigator: Allison Tracy</span></p>
    <p><span>The survival of hatchery-raised juvenile oysters is vital to the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay; however, this varies by environment. Allison Tracy proposes to use DNA sequencing technology at IMET to explore how bacteria in juvenile oysters help them grow better in specific locations, particularly in high-salinity sites. By identifying helpful bacteria, Dr. Tracy’s project could improve oyster survival rates in the Chesapeake Bay.</span></p>
    <p><span>This research aims to pinpoint bacteria that aid oyster survival, supporting both aquaculture and restoration efforts. It will also expand IMET’s DNA sequencing capacity and foster future collaborations within UMCES.</span></p>

    <p><span><u>Title: Developing a DNA-Based Vaccine for </u></span><em><span><u>Mycobacterium marinum</u></span></em></p>
    <p><span>Principal Investigator: Nilli Zmora</span></p>
    <p><span>Rising Chesapeake Bay temperatures have fueled a disease-causing spread of the bacterium </span><em>Mycobacterium marinum</em><span> in the Chesapeake Bay, infecting over 60% of fish species, in particular striped bass, and posing risks to both wildlife and humans.</span></p>
    <p><em>M. marinum</em><span> is a slow-growing bacterium that causes severe disease in fish and can also cause human infection, with few effective solutions and a lengthy antibiotic treatment. Previous vaccination efforts led to limited success, highlighting the need for a new and effective approach. Dr. Zmora’s project aims to develop a DNA vaccine targeting two antigens </span><em>(Ag85A and MMAR_4110) </em><span>to boost immunity in fish. </span></p>
    <p><span>DNA vaccines are emerging as a safer, easier alternative to traditional vaccines.  If successful, the vaccine could reduce </span><em>M. marinum</em><span> infections in striped bass and can be potentially adapted for other fish species and diseases furthering disease management research in the Chesapeake Bay. </span></p>

<Title>UMBC&#8217;s Ethics Bowl team earns spot in national championship two years in a row</Title>

    <p><a href="https://ethics.umbc.edu/ethics-bowl/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC’s Ethics Bowl team</a> won third place at the 2024 <a href="https://www.appe-ethics.org/regional-competitions/#:~:text=Chesapeake%20(NEW%20this%20year)" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Chesapeake Regional Ethics Bowl</strong></a> competition in December. The team competed at UMBC against 15 teams from the Mid-Atlantic region, all vying for one of three qualifying spots in the 2025 Association for Practical and Professional Ethics Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl National Competition. UMBC will join <a href="https://www.instagram.com/vtphilosophy/p/DDVkIhesrS_/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Virginia Tech</a>, first-place winner, Salisbury University, second-place winner, and 33 qualifying teams across the country at the national competition in February 2025.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Activities like the Ethics Bowl engage students to think more critically about their own values and decisions, and thereby be better able to engage with those whose views differ,” says <strong>Jessica Pfeifer</strong>, associate professor of philosophy and department chair. “This will make them better scientists, doctors, programmers, entrepreneurs, lawyers, parents, and citizens.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Six weeks before the competition, teams receive detailed information about the topics they will discuss, allowing them to prepare and strategize their arguments. Students must be ready to answer judges’ questions and defend their responses to the opposing team in just a few minutes. Each team competes in four preliminary rounds to advance to the semifinals and finals.</p>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Greg Ealick</strong>, a philosophy lecturer, has coached the undergraduate team 15 years. He meets with the team year-round to hone their critical thinking skills, debate challenging ethical issues across all disciplines, and develop strategies for conveying their research respectfully and succinctly. Ealick knows what it takes to make it to the top. In 1988, Ealick ’89, philosophy, helped <a href="https://x.com/umbcbookstore/status/1413121075622420485/photo/3" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">lead UMBC’s debate team to number one in the United States</a> and to the Parliamentary Debate Association world finals in Australia, where he was ranked as the number one American speaker. Over the 15 years Ealick has coached the Ethics Bowl team, UMBC has qualified for nationals seven times, most recently in 2023 and 2020.</p>

    <p>“Qualifying means a lot since it is a testament to all our hard work throughout the semester. We spent several hours each week preparing for these cases, which were sometimes incredibly difficult to hash out,” says <strong>Tafat Boudif</strong>, a political science junior. Boudif helps Retrievers engage with government, politics, and policy-making as a political engagement intern at UMBC’s <a href="https://civiclife.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Democracy and Civic Life</a>. She also serves on the Student Government Association’s <a href="https://sga.umbc.edu/appeals-board/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Appeals Board</a>. “There are also so many additional things that we have to take into account, such as tone, confidence, etc. So I’m super proud of our team for being able to juggle all these things against some pretty tough teams!”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>This year’s achievement comes shortly after UMBC’s new <a href="https://umbc.edu/quick-posts/center-for-ethics-and-values-launch/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Ethics and Values</a>, home to the UMBC Ethics Bowl team, announced it would be <a href="https://umbc.edu/quick-posts/center-for-ethics-and-values-launch/#:~:text=moderate%20the%20conversation.-,In%20addition,-to%20establishing%20a" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">a new host in the national line-up</a> for the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics regional competitions. The event was co-hosted by UMBC’s Department of Philosophy and made possible with over 50 former Ethics Bowl team members and community members who helped to run, moderate, and judge the tournament, which took place on December 7, 2024, in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>This is what keeps former Ethics Bowl team member <strong>Stephanie Ferrone</strong> ’09, physics, returning to UMBC—her role as a coach. She notes that the skills she developed in Ethics Bowl continue to guide her thinking and communication as a physicist at the Underwater Electromagnetics Sensors branch of the Naval Surface Warfare Center.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Coaching Ethics Bowl has been a joy; past the highs and lows of competition, there is a true delight in sitting in a room in the PAHB every week to help students talk through all aspects of Ethics Bowl, from Beauchamp’s principles of biomedical ethics to the importance of signposting in public speaking,” says Ferrone. “It’s even more meaningful of an experience to know how deeply this is likely to affect these students—this type of experience is one that shapes a college career and crafts friendships and connections that truly last.”</p>

    <div>The goal of the <a href="https://www-air.larc.nasa.gov/missions/pacepax/index.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">PACE-PAX</a> mission was to validate the atmospheric, surface, and ocean measurements of the NASA PACE mission. The campaign was a massive effort to collocate spaceborne, airborne, shipborne, and in-water assets over Southern California and the eastern Pacific Ocean from August to October 2024.</div>

    <div>Dr. McBride and Ms. Smith, as well as an extended team that included ESI chief engineer <a href="https://esi.umbc.edu/members-a-z/#Cieslak" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dominik Cieslak</a>, mechanical engineer <a href="https://esi.umbc.edu/members-a-z/#Decker" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Ian Decker</a>, systems engineer <a href="https://esi.umbc.edu/members-a-z/#Nelson" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Danny Nelson</a>, and UMBC ATPH graduate student <a href="https://esi.umbc.edu/graduate-research-assistants/#Sienkiewicz" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Noah Sienkiewicz</a>, supported the Airborne Hyper-Angular Rainbow Polarimeter (AirHARP2) instrument in the field. AirHARP2 is a 1:1 copy of ESI’s HARP2 instrument on the NASA PACE mission. AirHARP2 took data onboard the high-altitude NASA ER-2 research aircraft during the campaign and flew under the PACE spacecraft on several days. On a flight day, ESI personnel made sure the instrument was ready for flight and monitored the instrument health and telemetry during flight. ESI field support also worked with a remote team at UMBC to check the flight data quality and prepare for the next day’s events. </div>

<Title>Astronomers observe real-time formation of black hole jets for the first time&#160;</Title>

    <p>A large international team of scientists has observed a phenomenon that astronomers didn’t ever expect to see happen in real time. A new <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2041-8213/ad8651" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">paper published</a> in <em>Astrophysical Journal Letters</em> led by <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/a-space-of-ones-own-black-hole-research/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Eileen Meyer</strong></a>, associate professor of physics at UMBC, describes the findings. It reports remarkable increases in radio emission in a few months and formation of plasma jets extending from a black hole over the course of a year.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>A galaxy about 270 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation Draco called 1ES 1927+654 is the focus of the excitement. For many years, scientists had classified 1ES 1927+654 as an “active galactic nucleus,” or AGN, meaning it has an active black hole at its center. This particular black hole was adding material at a slow rate—until it wasn’t.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Back in 2018, the black hole first made news when it suddenly increased its activity exponentially. It dramatically increased the rate at which it was consuming material and became over 100 times brighter in the visible light spectrum over the course of a few months. A shift like that was once thought to take far longer than a human lifetime, on the order of thousands to millions of years. Since then, scientists have been observing it closely for any additional interesting phenomena, and 1ES 1927+654 has delivered.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>More drama</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>After the major increase in activity began in 2018, which included nearly a year of extremely high levels of X-ray emission, the black hole quieted down again by 2020—only to dramatically increase its output again in 2023. At that time, it began emitting radio waves at 60 times the previous intensity over just a few months, behavior which has never been monitored in real time for a supermassive black hole.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Some of the highest-resolution imaging of radio frequency emissions was collected using a technique called <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Observations_Very_Long_Baseline_Interferometry_VLBI" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Very Long Baseline Interferometry</a> (VLBI). It clearly shows a pair of oppositely directed plasma jets forming near the black hole and expanding outward over the course of 2023 – 2024. Among the other unusual behavior of the black hole, this is the first-ever observation of jet formation in real time.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>In recent years, scientists have discovered a handful of supermassive black holes that appear to emit far more intensely at radio frequencies compared to when they were first observed, which they call “changing-look AGN.” However, until now all of them had been observed at two timepoints years or decades apart, and the assumption was that “something happened” in between. This new paper gives the very first look at <em>how</em> this kind of change occurs in detail.</p>

    <h4><strong>Turning on in real time</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>In some cases, black hole jets “can reach huge scales well outside the host galaxy. They can affect how many stars are forming,” Meyer says. Figuring out how the jets work “is a very important thing, in order to understand the big picture of how the universe is evolving and galaxies evolved.”</p>

    <p>In the case described in the new paper, “We have very detailed observations of a radio jet  ‘turning on’ in real time, and even more exciting are the VLBI observations, which clearly show these plasma blobs moving out from the black hole,” Meyer says. “That shows us that this really is an outflow jet of plasma that’s causing the radio flare. It’s not some other process causing increased radio emission. This is a jet moving at likely 20 to 30 percent of the speed of light originating very near a black hole. That’s the exciting thing.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Sibasish Laha</strong>, an associate research scientist for UMBC with the <a href="https://csst.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Space Sciences Technology</a> at Goddard Space Flight Center and second author on the new paper, has long studied changing-look AGN at X-ray wavelengths. On a hunch that 1ES 1927+654’s radio frequency emission might show interesting behavior as well, he reached out to Meyer to form a collaboration to study it and other similar galaxies back in 2020. He is lead author on a <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2501.02340" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">companion paper </a>that is currently under review. It includes additional X-ray observations and interpretation of the jet formation event. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“We still do not understand how black holes and their host galaxies interact with each other and co-evolve in cosmic time,” Laha says, “and this study for the first time gives us the rare opportunity to understand how a supermassive black hole ‘talks’ to the host galaxy.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Not for the faint of heart</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>In this kind of work, time is of the essence. “Time-domain astronomy,” as it’s called, “is not for the faint of heart,” Meyer says. “You know, there are rapid alerts—something happens and you have to go follow up. You gotta get on it, and it doesn’t matter if it’s midnight, you have to send that email because you know every hour counts. It’s a little stressful.”</p>

    <p>The project became an “all hands on deck” moment for the UMBC collaboration. Once Meyer and Laha saw the huge jump in radio activity in 2023, Meyer says, “We were like, ‘whoa, ok, something is happening.’ This has never been seen before. We got very excited, so this is where we went all in on basically trying to grab every radio telescope and get it to look at this source.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Because 1ES 1927+654 was changing so rapidly before their eyes, the team was awarded new, unscheduled observations on telescopes around the world during the study period, when typically telescope time must be scheduled months or years in advance.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>A postdoctoral fellow working with Meyer, <strong>Onic Shuvo</strong>, who is third author on the paper, took on the lion’s share of the late-night duties, rapidly analyzing incoming data and requesting new observations. He’s thrilled to be part of such an exciting discovery. “This remarkable finding challenges existing models of AGN activity and highlights the unique role that changing-look AGN play in unraveling the mysteries of the central engine of active galaxies in real-time,” Shuvo says.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>A new jet is born</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>The newborn jets coming from 1ES 1927+654 are relatively small compared to the massive jet structures in some of the most powerful AGN, Meyer says. But that doesn’t make them less interesting—in fact, they are probably more common across the universe and therefore very important to understand, she says.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Some data suggested that the 2018 flare, in the visible spectrum, could be due to a “tidal disruption event,” where a large object like a star or cloud of gas gets too close to an inactive black hole and artificially brightens it for just a few years, Meyer says. But observations of tidal disruption events in already-active galaxies are rare and not well understood.  </p>
    
    
    
    <p>While the largest plasma jets extend well beyond their host galaxies and last millions of years, scientists are gaining understanding of a new class of smaller, shorter-lived jets called “compact symmetric objects,” or CSOs. Meyer believes the data in this case point most strongly to the birth of a new CSO. One recent hypothesis is that jets in CSOs are qualitatively different from the very large and long-lived jets seen elsewhere, Meyer says, perhaps representing “a single ingestion of a star or a gas cloud; basically a single tidal disruption event happens and powers this short-term jet for maybe 1,000 years.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Perhaps the tidal disruption event occurred several years ago, “and it took a few years for the accreting black hole to organize and start producing the jet,” as the team saw in 2023 – 2024, Meyer says. </p>

    <h4><strong>Open questions</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Overall, “We still don’t really understand after all these decades of studying these sources why only a fraction of accreting black holes produce jets and then exactly how they launch them. Until recently we could not literally look into that innermost region to see what’s happening—how the accretion disk surrounding the black hole is interacting with and producing the jet. And so there are still a lot of open questions there,” Meyer says. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Questions remain, but today there are many promising models of how black holes produce jets, Meyer says. Next steps will include working with theorists to understand how the data from this study can help test and refine those models. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“There’s a lot of theoretical work to be done to understand what we’ve seen, but the good thing is that we have a massive amount of data,” Meyer says. “We’re going to keep following this source, and it’s going to continue to be exciting.” </p>
