Leadership Announcement for UCM
Dear UMBC Community,
I am pleased to share that I have appointed an interim vice president for University Communications and Marketing (UCM), the university’s central hub for marketing, communications, and brand.
With the assistance of The Registry, a firm that specializes in higher education interim leadership placements, we have secured Tim Cobb, a seasoned marketing and communications leader, to serve as interim vice president starting today, January 8.
Tim brings more than 29 years of experience in leading strategic marketing and communications efforts for universities and professional service organizations. Most recently, he served as interim executive director of communications and marketing for Bemidji State University in Minnesota, where he successfully launched the university’s first centralized marketing and communications division. Prior to that, in his work as vice president of marketing and communications at Willamette University in Oregon and as vice president for integrated communications and chief marketing officer at Southwestern University in Texas, he was responsible for all marketing and communications—including brand strategy, market research, online marketing, social media, creative development, media planning and buying, public relations, and crisis management. Tim has also spent time leading creative strategy at several marketing agencies.
Tim earned his bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University and his master’s in management science from Purdue University. He has also served as president of the Portland, Oregon, chapter of the American Marketing Association and as president of the Portland Advertising Federation.
Tim’s arrival marks an important next step in the continuing evolution of UCM following the departure of Vice President Tracey Reeves at the end of last year. I am so pleased that he has chosen to share his talents with us in this important leadership role at this pivotal time. We have also launched the search for UCM’s permanent vice president, with the goal of filling that position in the coming year.

2025 Summer Internship in Archaeology!
Maryland Historical Trust
The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) seeks candidates for its 2025 Summer Internship in Archaeology. Interns serve a maximum of 400 hours over a period of 10 consecutive weeks to begin on or about May 19, 2025. Current graduate students in anthropology/archaeology are preferred. We also encourage applications from students who are currently enrolled in or have recently graduated from an accredited undergraduate program in anthropology/archaeology or another closely related field.
This is a paid internship. Students will receive a total amount not to exceed $6,600.00 paid in bi-weekly increments based on the number of hours worked at a base rate of $16.50 per hour. The era of generative AI is upon us, and chatbots such as chatGPT are being used by programmers at all levels of experience to produce code. Some generative AI systems, such as
Gemini Code Assist, specialize in code generation. Unfortunately, AI-generated code often contains errors in the form of functionality that fails to meet specifications or vulnerabilities that can be exploited by hackers. People have been working on program verification and secure coding for sixty years, but even so, the skill needed to find such errors is possessed by only a fraction of software engineers, and these skills are not being passed on to student programmers as they should be.
The goal of this FREE workshop is to gather and produce actionable ideas and suggestions that may be of use to the IT profession. The workshop will consist of invited speakers, panels, and open discussion.
We invite would-be participants to submit short position papers offering comments, observations, experiences, and suggestions that pertain to any or all of the following workshop themes:
- What is or could be done to make AI-generated code more trustworthy, from the perspective of functionality and/or cybersecurity?
- How can we do better at instilling the ideas and tools of secure development into the software profession?
- Being able to produce quality code, with or without the aid of AI, seems to be related to system skills in general. How can we do better at giving students these skills before (or as) they enter the workplace?
Position papers should limited to three pages and submitted according to this
template. Submit your position paper via email to
codebot25@umbc.edu after
registering for the workshop.
The organizing committee will select several papers for live presentation at the workshop. Selection will be based on relevance to the workshop themes, technical merit, and perceived interest to the audience. Position papers that are mere marketing pieces will not be considered, but descriptions of hardware and software solutions tying into the themes described above are welcome. Limited travel support may be available for non-local speakers. Position papers and summaries of the discussions that follow will make up the core of the workshop report.
UMBC students, both graduate or undergraduate, are welcome to submit position papers that describe their own personal experience and observations with AI-generated code in their own words. Students may include their resumes with position papers if they wish to have their work/resume circulated to other attendees. Domestic and international students are welcome to participate in this workshop.

New Prescription vendor - MedImpact
The State has a new prescription vendor - January 1, 2025
Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a safe and relaxing holiday break.
As a reminder, the State has a new prescription vendor, MedImpact, effective January 1, 2025.
CVS Caremark is no longer the State's prescription vendor. The last day of coverage under CVS Caremark was December 31, 2024.
Employees who were enrolled in prescription coverage in 2024 were automatically enrolled in MedImpact as of January 1, 2025. New employees who were hired in December 2024 and elected prescription coverage were enrolled with MedImpact.
Since the State only has one prescription vendor, this was a mandatory change for all State employees. All State of Maryland employees who were enrolled in prescription coverage during the 2024 calendar year were automatically enrolled in prescription coverage with MedImpact as of January 1, 2025.
The information about changing to MedImpact as the new prescription vendor was shared by the State Employee Benefits Division during their
Open Enrollment period this past Fall (Oct 15th - Nov 8th), and by the HRSTM Benefits & Wellness Team during our
Open Enrollment Information Session and on our Open Enrollment
website.
MedImpact
State employees who have prescription coverage for the 2025 calendar year began receiving their MedImpact prescription cards to their home address around December 19, 2024 in envelopes from MedImpact (see image below and attached).
Please check your mail carefully for this envelope. If you did not receive your MedImpact card(s) in the mail, please call MedImpact at 1-844-348-8508.
Employees should begin using their MedImpact cards at their pharmacy as of January 1, 2025, and they should discard their CVS Caremark prescription cards.
Employees and their covered spouse should have received MedImpact cards. If you need to request a duplicate card, you can do so by calling MedImpact.
You can login to your
Workday account to confirm you have prescription coverage for the 2025 calendar year.

The National Museum of Asian Art (NMAA) invites applications for its eight-week, paid Summer Undergraduate Internship Program. Designed for current undergraduate students with little to no previous museum experience, the program introduces interns to museum work in general plus they are matched with one department compatible with their interests or career goals. Individuals select department choices in their application, however specific departments and projects are determined at the time of an internship offer.

Benchmarks that have been killed by LLM based systems
Killed by LLM is a project that documents public AI benchmarks that LLM-based AI systems have largely solved since 2018. Getting killed means that a benchmark no longer measures the frontier of AI technology as a challenge asking "Can AI do X?", but might still be a useful tool. Links to papers documenting fallen benchmarks are provided.
The project is on GitHub, and other people are invited to contribute new benchmarks that have been overcome.
