Researcher of the Week: Megha Jacob Undergraduate researchers explore their interests! This research will assess the effects of introducing music therapy (MT) into physical therapy (PT) sessions. Physical illness due to genetic and/or environmental factors (such as Down syndrome or car accident injuries, respectively) can be traumatizing. This is especially true with children because they are expected to cope with so much at a young age. Therapy sessions can be intense and draining for patients and can take a toll on their psychological state. MT, which promotes wellness in individuals by offering therapeutic benefits to the mind through the use of musical involvements, can help offset the psychological fatigue associated with PT. I plan on researching the specific types of physical disabilities for the children at the schools/institutions, so I can better understand the limitations and hazards of each disability. I also plan on attending educational workshops based on music, education, and therapy so that I may work under licensed therapists with both clinical and work experience. I wish to create innovative therapy techniques to incorporate music into therapy sessions by utilizing kinesthetic techniques to respond to sounds, creating group exercises to heighten social skills, and encouraging patients to compose and perform songs to help relieve stress and stimulate their minds. The goal of my research is to examine whether or not the combined use of PT and MT in therapy sessions is positively correlated with the patient’s mental and physical well-being.

When we recently saw a DVD titled “Resisting the Green Dragon,” we were thought it had to be a bad 1980’s Kung-Fu movie.

We were wrong… it was MUCH WORSE than an 80’s Kung-Fu movie…

This 12-piece DVD set comes from a coalition of religious groups, including Right Wing Watch.

It battles with the newest demon to threaten the world as we know it: ENVIRONMENTALSTS!!!!

“One of the greatest threats to society and the church today is the multifaceted environmentalist movement,” says Cornwall Alliance founder and national spokesman Dr. E. Calvin Beisner. “There isn’t an aspect of life that it doesn’t seek to force into its own mold.”

Essentially, this series intends to dispel “rumors” of climate change and delegitimize “radical environmentalists”.

Evidently Right Wing Watch thinks environmentalists intend not to save the planet but to (insert scary music here) destroy the Bible and Christianity as we know it!!!

We at US Democrazy are huge supporters of democracy, and enjoy a robust discussion on issues of the day.

Here are a three technology resolutions for 2011. 1. Be more Social. In this case I mean be more active with social media tools such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and twitter. I have been on these for years but not been very active. In 2011, my resolution is to actually use these to stay more connected with my friends and colleagues. For UMBC, my resolution is to be more active on our blog sites and share more information through blogging. You can track my progress on twitter as jjsuess. 2. Look to the clouds. At present I am tied to my laptop and depend on it for most of my work. I carry it home every night to do email. I want to rely on my iPad and iPhone much more extensively and want to be able to do my work from any device at any location. For me, my resolution is to embrace google docs and use tools like dropbox to sync my documents. Over the course of the year i will let you know how it goes. 3. Lose five pounds. Every day I lug a backpack that has my laptop, power cord, and other assorted stuff that runs about 12 pounds ( without papers). I want to reduce that by at least five pounds. If I can succeed on the other two goals I should be able to get a smaller laptop or get away with using the iPad at home and leave the laptop back at work. UMBC's StarCraft II team is facing off against Reed College's StarCraft II team on Jan 8th! We are playing in the collegaite starleague, a league for college students playing StarCraft II all across North America. This season 144 colleges are playing and UMBC is well in the running for the playoffs and is 5-2 so far. Come online this Saturday and watch the matches between UMBC and REED college and cheer the UMBC team on as we try to pull ahead to a 6-2 record. The stream will be avaliable at www.livestream.com/CSL_UMBC and the games will start around 4pm. Come online a bit early and listen to some commentary on the League as well as some awesome music produced by infinity state! (more from infinity state here as well)
