Thank you to those who attended our online meeting last week! This was our last meeting for the semester! As the end of the semester comes to an end, we want to thank you for all your participation and help with the blood drive. Speaking of, we finally have the results from the Fall 2024 blood drive! Just like last semester’s blood drive, we exceeded our goal! The UMBC Red Cross Club and American Red Cross share their appreciation for those who donated and those who volunteered. These blood drives allow us to give back to the community and help save lives, so thank you! Below are the results!

Megan McIntosh, ‘23, is a former English literature major who is currently a Library Desk Associate at Frederick Community College and pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science at the University of Maryland, to begin in January. Read more about her experience at UMBC and journey to graduate school below:

I studied English literature at UMBC because I have always had a deep appreciation for expression. From a very young age, I have been a self-proclaimed writer and artist, and I have always enjoyed novels, films, and other projects of similar artistic nature. By the time I started college, I was eager to develop the ability to interpret fiction, and I hoped UMBC would help me cultivate such a skill. In that regard, my professors far exceeded my expectations. I not only learned how to analyze texts through various lenses and write my own observations in a meaningful way, but I also learned how to “live like a writer” in creative writing classes and collaborated with my peers and Special Collections to build a virtual exhibition of George Cruikshank’s illustrations and manuscripts. The meticulous care that went into selecting which of Cruikshank’s works should be in the collection, along with the thorough research required to ensure the descriptions of each piece were accurate, revealed to me the importance of protecting and promoting artistic artifacts in order to preserve our access to past ideologies. Taking part in such an important task is what sparked my interest in curation and began my path toward librarianship.

Since graduating, I have worked as a learning assistant and, more recently, a Learning Associate in the Frederick Community College Library/learning commons. This job is one I feel quite passionate about, and it has led me to pursue a Master of Library and Information Science at UMD. I hope to eventually work in curation–whether in a museum, special collections department, or university library–where I will have the privilege of building meaningful collections that offer insight into previous perspectives and inspire future ones.

The Global Asias Initiative at UMBC is now offering the second round of its student research fellowship in Global Asias in the amount of $500 where students will work with faculty and community partners on an independent study in the field for a period of one semester. We’re currently accepting applications for projects taking place in Spring 2025. Applications are due December 16, 2024.

The fellowship supports a research project supervised by a UMBC faculty member working in the field of Global Asias. The project should explore a topic in the field of Global Asias: broadly construed to include Asian American studies, Asian studies, or Asian diaspora studies in global context. The exact parameters (length, format, etc) will be set by your faculty advisor. Depending on your major and your academic and professional plans, your project may consist of a scholarly research project or a creative product with a significant research component. At the end of the year, students will submit the final project to their faculty advisor and may be asked to do a brief presentation on their topic to fellow students and faculty in Global Asias.

We highly encourage proposals for projects that use methods, ideas, and approaches from more than one discipline. The proposed project should be humanities research. Broadly speaking, the “humanities” means the study of human society and culture. Humanities majors or minors typically include but are not limited to: Africana Studies; American Studies; Anthropology; Art and Art History; Asian and Asian American Studies; English; History; Human Rights; Journalism; Latinx Studies; Media and Communication Studies, Philosophy; Sociology; Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies.

*Funding will be distributed to the student as a stipend in two $250 amounts - once in January and once in May upon completion of the project

In a collaboration with The Mosaic: Center for Cultural Diversity and Campus Life, “The Multicultural Leadership Experience (MLE)” seeks to:

Engage participants in a multicultural development and leadership learning program.
Enhance participants' understanding of their social identities, leadership identity, as well as their capacity to lead while navigating systems of power, privilege, and oppression.
Enable participants' development through authenticity, self-awareness, relationships, and capitalizing on differences.

The sessions are as follows:

Participants will be exploring the concept of Authentic Leadership, Legacy Building, and Breaking Barriers of White Supremacy within Leadership. We will do this in a leadership learning cohort by:

Enhancing participants' leader identity and leadership capacity using an identity-conscious lens and student development theories;
Increasing participants' awareness of their personal abilities, identity development, and intersections that shape their story through authenticity, self-reflection, and cultural humility;
Exploring the role they play in developing relationships while building intra/intercultural connections;
And capitalizing on their differences, specifically in relation to their racial, ethnic, national, and other salient identity social groups

The purpose of all MLE programs is to provide a space for students and student leaders who identify within diverse or marginalized backgrounds to discover their own capacity to lead, while also promoting a better understanding of their experiences, issues, strengths, and outcomes in navigating their own collegiate careers. However, ALL students are welcome to apply!

Registration is due Friday, January 31st, 2025 at 11:59pm. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to participate. In order to be accepted into the program you must commit to all sessions in person. Please answer all of the questions before submitting your registration. Any questions can be sent to i3b@umbc.edu.
