Grocery Reflections
When my wife Sharon and I make our trip to the grocery store each week, we fall automatically into a rhythm developed through years of shared experience. Sharon carries the coupons and keeps track of which staple products (sugar, laundry detergent) we need to replenish. I grab a cart outside the store and do most of the pushing. When an aisle has products we both use, or items too heavy or numerous for Sharon to manage without the cart, we walk together. Otherwise we might be an aisle or two apart, Sharon looking at chicken for dinners while I’m picking up frozen entrees for work-week lunches. In the checkout line we unload the groceries onto the conveyor belt, me from the front of the cart and Sharon from the back. I swipe my credit card and sign for the groceries; Sharon gets the receipt and the coupons spit out by the cash register.
It wasn’t always this easy and automatic. For one thing, especially after we moved to the East Coast in 2003, it took a while to figure out which brands and products we liked. More crucially, our ability to work in harmony has been honed through many trials and many errors: Sharon wandering through the store, arms full of cleaning products, trying to figure out where I went with the cart; both of us picking up bread but neither of us milk. Sometimes we got impatient with each other, but we learned.
I’ve always been wary of routines because it’s easy for them to turn into ruts. When I hear elders described as being “set in their ways,” I think to myself, “Not me. Not ever.” But as I look back on the turbulent years when more of my world was in flux, I feel relief and gratitude at having eliminated some variables. I’ve found my calling, my mate and my home. Now that Sharon and I have mastered even grocery shopping together, we can focus more eagerly and confidently on life’s other joys and challenges. OK, what’s next?

The Velvet Years 1965-67: Warhol's Factory

Continuing on display at the Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery through December 12th is The Velvet Years 1965-67: Warhol's Factory, photographs by Stephen Shore. These photographs, taken by Shore between 1965 and 1967, depict the scene at Andy Warhol's studio, the Factory. Shore captures a time when Warhol was emerging as a prominent visual artist and avant-garde filmmaker. The Factory Shore depicts is populated with a diverse group of musicians, artists, actors, writers and aspiring cultural sophisticates.
The Velvet Underground was very much a part of Warhol's scene. He is credited with galvanizing their career and promoting them through his multi-media shows, the Exploding Plastic Inevitable, held at the Dom, a club on St. Mark's Place in lower Manhattan. The group consisted of Lou Reed on guitar and vocals, John Cale on electric violin and viola, Sterling Morrison on bass and Maureen "Mo" Tucker on drums. Nico, one of Warhol's discoveries, performed and sang with the group for a short period of time. She received equal billing on the Velvets' first album, for which Warhol designed the cover: a peelable illustration of a banana. It sold more than any of their subsequent albums. The group was a forerunner of punk rock and their sound and style greatly influenced David Bowie, the New York Dolls, Patti Smith, Blondie, the Sex Pistols and many others.>
Stephen Shore's work has been widely published and exhibited for the past twenty-five years. He was the first living photographer to have a one-man show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. He has also had one-man shows at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Art Institute of Chicago and has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. His series of exhibitions at Light Gallery in New York in the early 1970s sparked interest in color photography and led the rebirth of the use of the view camera for documentary work. Aperture has published two monographs of his photographs, Uncommon Places and The Gardens at Giverny. He currently serves as chairman of the photography department at Bard College. He is represented by Pace/MacGill in New York City.

Many of us remember Kyle Halle-Erby who joined us for our 2008 faculty workshop at UMBC. Kyle is now active in story work with youths in Colombia. His collaborator
Tatiana Rais has shared with us two blogs created during a recent workshop. The first is an explanation (in english) of their daily schedule and the workshop process. They also created the second blog for the students. Part of the workshop was to give the students access to the internet and to self-publication. Here, the kids introduced themselves and wrote about their experience. The site includes all of their written stories with some pictures and a few of the final videos. While this website is entirely in spanish, all of the videos themselves have been subtitled.
