Welcome home to our campus community! We hope your semester is progressing well. 

We are writing to invite you to join us in a new initiative called UMBC Talks, which aims to enhance the sense of community, vibrancy, and well-being at UMBC. Over the summer, we worked with the UMBC Talks core team to prepare to guide group conversations about our experiences of inclusion and exclusion at UMBC. The hope is that by talking about our experiences, campus community members can reaffirm and deepen our collective commitment to UMBC’s core value of inclusive excellence. 

We would love you to participate in a series of two conversations we will co-facilitate. The conversations will take place on November 20 from 2:00 PM to 03:30 PM location to be determined (In-person), and on November 25 from 2 PM to 3 PM in location to be communicated later (In-person). All that will be expected of you is bringing your own stories and perspectives (as well as a pen or pencil and a notebook or paper) and engaging in what we hope will be an enjoyable and informative conversation. The learning we do together will likely inform the strategic planning process UMBC will launch later this year.

Hi Pre-Dental Society!

I wanted to let you all know that in addition to our elections GBM this week, we have been invited by the CNMS and Health Professions Advisors to attend sessions with guest speakers in the dental field that are coming to UMBC!

There is one this Wednesday, November 13th at 2:30 pm in FA303 with a speaker from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.

The second one is this Thursday, November 14th from 8:30-9:45 am in Meyr 272, in Dr. Kelly's CHEM 490 class. Dr. Deborah Wilson (UMBC Biochemistry '78) is one of our active and distinguished alumna, recently retired from her own career long dental practice. She was our 1st female Biochemistry major and mentored numerous UMBC students on the pre-dental track throughout her career.  She will talk about polymeric materials in dentistry. All are welcome to come and meet her, while getting real-world advice from a UMBC-connected active member of the dental community.

Course Description: 
This project-based course is designed to help students gain insight and expertise in key components of museum and gallery work (e.g. curating, exhibition design, collection management, and public programming). Students learn and train under the guidance of an instructor experienced and knowledgeable about the art museum world. By the end of the semester students will have gained an invaluable preparatory training for career opportunities with art museums, art galleries and like institutions involved with the public display of historical and cultural material. Prerequisite: ART 321, ART 323, ART 328, or ART 329 with a grade of 'C' or better.

This semester, students will explore how museums operate and who does what within them. Baltimore is our learning laboratory. We will focus on how museums are shaped by the people who create them, work in them, fund them, critique them and the public who are their audiences.
