Introducing Qwickly Attendance Plus: Now piloting an upgraded version with exciting features for attendance tracking
Detailed reports, new check-in options in Blackboard
Instructional Technology is pleased to announce the pilot of Qwickly Attendance Plus in Blackboard Ultra courses. Featuring mobile check-in and advanced reporting, Qwickly Attendance provides faculty with tools to identify student absences and send email notifications automatically. The Qwickly Attendance Plus pilot will take place November 4, 2024 through May 25, 2025.
Qwickly Attendance was launched at UMBC in 2016, providing an easy tool to take attendance and synchronize points to the Blackboard gradebook. One popular feature of Qwickly allows faculty to set up attendance self check-ins -- in the upgraded version, a rapidly rotating QR code appears on the screen instead of a PIN, reducing the possibility of false attendance. Students can use the Qwickly Attendance mobile app to check in from their smart phone or check their attendance records on the go.
Another exciting new feature in Qwickly Attednance Plus will convert student activity in Blackboard to attendance records. When we consider attendance in an online course, login is often the first metric considered. However, proposed federal regulations for attendance in distance education suggest tracking student activity including LMS activity such as discussion posting and test taking. Qwickly Attendance Plus will automatically derive attendance status for students based on their engagement with specified course activities during a designated period and mark attendance accordingly.
Additional features of Qwickly Attendance Plus include:

Check-Out: Add an option for students to check-out at the end of a class meeting.

Forgive Absences: Specify how many absences are excluded from grade calculations.

Schedule Sessions: Create attendance sessions in advance for the entire semester.

Hyflex Support: Create context for attendance location (in-person vs. remote).
-
Location Confirmation: Specific locations create approved zones for attendance tracking.

Concurrent Check-in for Groups: Take attendance for any or all groups in a single session.

Updated Reporting: Review and identify attendance trends.
We invite faculty to explore the new features during the pilot. Upon conclusion of the pilot, Qwickly is expected to revert to the normal attendance application. Faculty feedback will help inform future adoption of the upgraded features.

Learn about Sun Spots and Solar Flares with NASA's Illuminate Series
The recent viewing of the Aurora Borealis on October 10 and 11, 2024, resulted in spectacular photos from across the globe, including locations that usually would be too far away to view the display. That particular severe geomagnetic storm was due to an outburst from the sun. The NASA Scientific Visualization Studio created "NASA's Illuminate" series, which discusses solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and sun spots. These short videos refer to the northern lights seen in May 2024, and, in particular, "the largest sun spot seen in almost a decade." Additionally, the video "What is Solar Maximum?" goes into more detail about the Sun's active period and solar weather. This video also is part of NASA's Heliophysics Big Year.

New Spring 2025 Course Offering: ASIA 330/ART 355 - The Dao of Intermedia
Prof. Chan is offering her popular "Dao of Intermedia" class again this spring. The course, crosslisted as ASIA 330 and ART 355, explores the connection between art and the everyday through lectures, and readings of Asian philosophy. The course consists of discussions about the philosophy and how traditional and contemporary artists/craftspeople have related the philosophy to their work. Scheduling Downtimes for ada and taki clusters
To all HPCF Users:
On Thursday November 14 from 0800-1200, both ada and taki will be unavailable.
During this time, DoIT will be patching the existing storage servers.
After this downtime, DoIT will begin to work with researchers to migrate data to newer storage systems.
In the coming weeks, additional downtimes may be scheduled to facilitate the roll-out of new CPU and GPU hardware purchased this summer.

Technology Tested and Updated in Classrooms
AV Services Operations staff evaluate, update, and repair AV
Thank you to our full-time and student staff for getting AV systems ready for the fall semester!
Much of our campus community slows down a bit over the summer session while students are working, interning, or at home with family and friends. For the Audio-Visual (AV) teams, the summer is the busiest time of the year because classrooms are available for upgrades!
In preparation for the fall semester, the Operations and Design & Engineering teams completed several major projects, including comprehensive classroom evaluations, new system installations and programming, and upgrades to existing technology.
Comprehensive System Evaluation
The AV Operations team meticulously checked 203 technology-enabled classrooms throughout the summer session. Once rooms were checked, the team repaired or replaced any aging or broken equipment, completed firmware updates, and did a final operational check before the fall semester began. This involved assessing various components of each AV system across:
· 91 Registrar Scheduled Classrooms and Lecture Halls
· 36 Departmental Classrooms
· 76 Webex Conference Rooms
This proactive initiative aims to enhance the experience for students, faculty, and staff as they return to campus. Key systems that underwent scrutiny included the review of Fall 23 - Spring 24 Request Tracker (RT) tickets for potential issues, full operational tests of AV systems, testing of lecture capture and HyFlex systems, firmware updates, and the repair or replacement of non-functional items.
Additionally, remote AV system monitoring has been implemented in 142 locations, encompassing a total of 967 devices. This capability enables staff to identify offline systems swiftly and investigate proactively ahead of reported issues.
Wifi-based Assistive Listening in Lecture Halls
This summer also saw the introduction of Wifi-based Assistive Listening in all lecture halls, allowing users to receive room audio directly on their personal devices via the Listen Everywhere application. Radio-frequency (RF) receivers have been available for some time in large classrooms and lecture halls, but the new advantages do not require users to retrieve and return earbuds and receivers for every lecture hall they visit.
Design & Engineering
The AV Design & Engineering team works through the fall and spring semesters completing new system designs for Registrar classrooms, departmental classrooms and lab spaces, and conference rooms. The majority of these new systems are installed, configured, and programmed by full-time staff and the student installation team through the summer semester.

Caron Wildy Successfully Defends his Dissertation
On November 1, 2024, Caron Wildy of LLC Cohort 21 successfully defended his dissertation and earned the title Doctor of Philosophy.
His hybrid defense went very smoothly and he gave an excellent presentation of his dissertation research, "Art-Style is the Future: The Spider-Verse as a Model for Conceptualizing and Visualizing Graphic Narratives in Visual Media."
