Abstract:

"Researchers, citizen scientists, and activists alike have focused attention on the disproportionate exposure to outdoor air pollution experienced by marginalized population groups in the United States, particularly by Black and Brown communities. In this talk, I present several recent studies that document this disproportionate exposure and the associated burden of disease as well as probe the emission sources and activities responsible for this form of environmental injustice. I focus specifically on two ubiquitous air pollutants–nitrogen dioxide, a component of smog, and fine particulate matter, commonly referred to as soot–and leverage novel, high-resolution datasets that combine the strengths of satellite remote sensing and detailed computer models. My results span the causal chain, linking policy and land-use practices with public health and economic damages, and can inform the development of policies that equitably reduce health-harming pollution."

Biography:

Dr. Gaige Kerr (he/him) is an assistant research professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health. Dr. Kerr researches air pollution, and projects he has led span topics ranging from understanding the emission sources of pollution to assessing the health impacts experienced by impacted populations, with a special emphasis on understanding associated ethnoracial and socioeconomic disparities. His research uses a wide variety of tools and methods, including remote sensing, atmospheric chemistry models and other numerical models, exposure assessment, and spatial statistical techniques. He received his BSc with honors in Atmospheric Science from Cornell University and his MA and PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Johns Hopkins University.

Get Involved in UMBC's Climate Goals!

Hello Retrievers!

October is Campus Sustainability Month and the UMBC Office of Sustainability has exciting news -- we are kicking off the process to update our university's Climate Action Plan (CAP)! The CAP isn’t just a document – it’s the blueprint that helps our campus reduce greenhouse gas emissions, prepare for climate change, and become a leader in sustainability. The CAP update is managed by dedicated working groups of students, faculty, and staff, with input from senior campus leaders, and we thank all these contributors for their support.

But we cannot update UMBC's CAP without your help! As a member of the UMBC community, your voice is crucial in helping us shape a sustainable future. Whether you love speaking up in person or prefer to share your thoughts anonymously, we’ve got you covered!

Take our CAP Survey! Share your thoughts on the goals from our 2020 CAP and what you want to see moving forward. Your feedback is completely anonymous, and it’s your chance to be heard! Click here to access our feedback survey.

Join the Sustainability Town Hall: Mark your calendars for October 21 from 2:30-4:00 in Lecture Hall 1! This is your opportunity to connect with peers and contribute directly to UMBC’s sustainability efforts.

Attend our Sustainability Office Hours: Prefer a smaller setting? Stop by MP105 on October 14 and October 28 from 12:00-1:00 PM to chat with us, ask questions, and offer feedback.

Schedule a 1-on-1: Email us at sustainability@umbc.edu to schedule a personal session.

This is your chance to make a real difference on campus and beyond. Help us create ambitious goals that push UMBC forward in addressing climate change. October is the perfect time to act – don’t miss out! Look for notifications and reminders on the Sustainability Matters myUMBC page and in our Sustainability Newsletter.

Your ideas matter, and together we can create a stronger, greener future for UMBC!

    Thanks for making a difference,

National Civic Life Conference Keynote Speaker Harry Boyte References Center for Democracy and Civic Life

<Tagline>Remarks include UMBC President Emeritus Hrabowski & the SGA</Tagline>

Boyte referenced UMBC and the Student Government Association in his remarks: “The university and its Center for Democracy and Civic Life, the Student Government, and others have been national leaders in student empowerment for public purposes. They have been exemplary models for civic as well as individual achievement. They aim at a land where everyone is free.”

Boyte’s address also illuminated some of the philosophy enacted through the Center’s work: "developing [students'] capacities for making change for public, commonwealth ends," and supporting a democracy in which politics "is far more than partisan politics, in which citizens become 'publics,' not mobs or consumers."

In addition, UMBC President Emeritus Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, gave a keynote address at the conference. Boyte also noted Hrabowski’s role in Martin Luther King’s Children’s Crusade and his work to foster a civic dimension within UMBC’s culture.
