Full Book Description:
This groundbreaking work examines how Black music functions as rhetoric, considering its subject not merely reflective of but central to African American public discourse. Author, musician, and scholar Earl H. Brooks argues that there would have been no Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Movement, or Black Arts Movement as we know these phenomena without Black music. Through rhetorical studies, archival research, and musical analysis, Brooks establishes the "sonic lexicon of Black music," defined by a distinct constellation of sonic and auditory features that bridge cultural, linguistic, and political spheres with music. Genres of Black music such as blues and jazz are discursive fields, where swinging, improvisation, call-and-response, blue notes, and other musical idioms serve as rhetorical tools to articulate the feelings, emotions, and states of mind that have shaped African American cultural and political development. Examining the resounding artistry of iconic musicians such as Scott Joplin, Mary Lou Williams, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, and Mahalia Jackson, this work offers an alternative register in which these musicians and composers are heard as public intellectuals, consciously invested in crafting rhetorical projects they knew would influence the public sphere.

Title IX Training Sessions Announced
Training required for all employees by December 12
Dear UMBC Community,
As outlined in the
campus announcement sent on September 5, 2024, the policy was updated to require all employees, including faculty, staff, and student employees, to complete annual Title IX training.
As such, employees must attend the “Understanding Your Rights and Responsibilities Under Title IX” training facilitated by ECR no later than December 12, 2024.
The training will cover topics such as an overview of ECR and applicable policies and procedures, what constitutes prohibited conduct under University policy, responding to a disclosure, procedures for reporting and resolving reports of prohibited conduct, trauma-informed care, and confidentiality.
The training session will last approximately 50 minutes. The dates and times for virtual and in-person training sessions offered through October 16 are posted on the Office of Equity and Civil Rights’
myUMBC group. Please register for a session as soon as possible, as seating is limited. Additional training session dates and times will be announced via the myUMBC group and posted on October 7, 2024.

I hope this memo finds y'all well! I'm
just writing to inform you all about this year's debate! In
collaboration with the Philosophy department, we have organized a talk
in the Fine Arts Recital Hall on October fourth (THIS FRIDAY) at 7:30 PM (doors at 7:00 PM).
Four of UMBC's Philosophy professors, Dr. Eric Campbell, Dr. Joonho
Lee, Dr. Blake Francis, and Professor James Thomas, will be engaging in a
discussion of 'the good life', focusing closely on three specific questions:
Is morality or spirituality more important for a good life?
Is technology making our lives better?
Is truth necessary for a good life?
After each topic, there will be a Q&A section where the audience can chime in with their questions to further the discussion. Free pizza to follow the debate!
I will be moderating the debate and I am so excited to see how they narrow these questions down and discuss.

UMBC's annual staff awards are an important way of recognizing the work being done every day by our dedicated exempt and nonexempt staff. Please take a moment to review the information regarding the awards and nominate someone who has been doing an exceptional job in that category. The deadline for nominations is October 31, 2024.

UMBC Presidential Distinguished Staff Awards: recognizing exceptional performance, leadership, and/or service

Jakubik Family Endowment Staff Award for Exempt or Nonexempt Staff: recognizing contributions toward the success of UMBC students

Karen L. Wensch Endowment Award for Outstanding Nonexempt Staff: recognizing excellence across a variety of areas of service

Teresa Lupinek Endowment Award for Exempt or Nonexempt Staff: recognizing staff whose work embodies many of the outstanding qualities for which Teresa and her work were known

Idea and Innovation Challenge; Form Now Available!
Do you have an idea that solves a problem in society or the environment? Is there a product or service idea you have that is better than the current solution? Do you love to find innovative solutions for all types of problems?
The Idea and Innovation Challenge is your chance to explore your solution to a problem and win cash prizes up to $800!. Students can enter ideas in the Technology & Innovation track, the Social Impact track, or the Spark track.
Don’t have your own idea? The Spark Track will provide the problem – you provide the solution. This year’s problem is climate change. Address one of the following with your solution:
Reducing energy consumption and boosting renewable energy
Promoting sustainable transportation
Recycling and waste reduction
Conserving water resources
Supporting local, sustainable agriculture
Protecting and maintaining green spaces
