Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
During my internship at T. Rowe Price's Owings Mills branch as a Global Account Services intern, I had an exciting and hands-on experience in the Client Account Services division. My daily tasks included transferring substantial sums of money—sometimes up to $15 million—between various accounts and firms. We had numerous training and practice sessions to ensure accuracy and efficiency in these transfers. Alongside these responsibilities, I worked on three major projects, including a career progression initiative where I interviewed over 50 senior professionals and honed my skills with tools like Excel and PowerPoint. This project is now being used by the department as a job aid for both internal and external users and serves as a presentation tool for our project manager.
One of the highlights was the incredible networking opportunities. I connected with over 100 people across the firm, learning from their diverse experiences. The internship also offered fantastic extracurricular activities, with my favorite being a women's networking breakfast where I engaged with inspiring women from different departments. The culture at T. Rowe Price was vibrant and diverse, making every day an exciting and rewarding experience!
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?:
I first learned about the position at T. Rowe Price during the UMBC career fair, where I engaged with representatives from the firm and explored their various finance opportunities. Intrigued by what I learned, I decided to apply through their online application, which consisted of three different parts. I submitted my application in mid-September. After successfully passing the application stage, I had a one-on-one interview with HR. Upon passing that, I was invited to a Superday interview, where I spent an entire day in back-to-back interviews with various professionals from different groups within T. Rowe Price. After successfully navigating this process, I received an offer to join the firm for a summer internship!
What resources did you use to find your current experience?:
Career Fairs, Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.)
What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?:
I've thoroughly enjoyed the passion for culture and diversity that T. Rowe Price promotes. The firm's culture, affectionately known as "T Rowe Nice," truly lives up to its name. It's incredibly easy to connect with and learn from anyone at the company, as everyone is eager to work with those who are curious and willing to learn. The array of activities outside of work is impressive, catering to a wide variety of interests. I joined a group focused on community service and volunteering, which led to one of my most rewarding experiences. We spent a day at a nonprofit second-hand store on the edge of Baltimore, where we sorted and organized stock for a few hours. It was a fulfilling and organic experience, working alongside people who share the same values and dedication to helping those in need.
What really stood out to me was how T. Rowe Price treated us as full-fledged employees rather than typical interns. For three months, they entrusted us with impactful and lasting projects and provided us with training and experiences that are usually reserved for full-time staff. We were actively involved in significant tasks, such as transferring funds and interacting with intermediary clients, which gave us a real sense of responsibility and a deep understanding of the business.
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?:
I believe I've made an impact through my work and projects because what I worked on has become integral tools within the department. One of my projects is now being used as a job aid on the training website, accessible to all T. Rowe Price employees, which to me is clear evidence that my contributions are valued, lasting, and impactful! Additionally, my former manager continues to use this project as a presentation tool, further highlighting its importance and the trust they placed in my work!
Moreover, the collaborative nature of some projects, where I partnered with full-time employees, reinforced my belief that I was making a difference. Being treated as an integral part of the team and knowing that my work was contributing directly to the success of ongoing projects, rather than being just an intern assignment, assured me that my efforts were meaningful and impactful. The tangible results and continued use of my work within the company are how I know I've made a lasting impact!
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?:
My advice to another student seeking an internship or similar experience is to start early and be proactive in your search. Take advantage of resources like your school's Career Center, which can provide guidance, interview preparation, and connections to potential employers. When applying, tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight relevant skills and experiences that align with the position you're targeting. During the internship, don't be afraid to ask questions, seek feedback, and take on additional responsibilities—this shows your eagerness to learn and grow. Lastly, focus on networking and building relationships with professionals across the organization; these connections can be invaluable for your future career!

What I liked most about my position at T. Rowe Price was the opportunity to work on meaningful projects that made a real impact within the department, along with the chance to network with a diverse range of professionals. I especially loved the emphasis on diversity and inclusion, which strongly aligned with my own ethics and morals. The numerous opportunities to grow and learn in such an inclusive environment were invaluable. The Career Center was instrumental in guiding me through the application process and preparing me for the interviews, helping me secure this incredible experience!

Healing from home—with Taylor Gaines ’13, Doc on the Go
On a warm April morning, Taylor Gaines ’13, has a short visit with one of his regular patients, who is typically anxious and standoffish. This is the reason why Gaines goes directly to this family’s home for checkups.
Before the treatment, Gaines collects some information from his clients and sets up his supplies, while the patient sits comfortably on the couch in the living room, purring. Gray with white patches, Poe is a cat who has arthritis, and today she will be getting her regular treatment to manage it. Gaines, a vet who does home visits, will give Poe her second dose of Solensia, which numbs the feeling of arthritis, and he also plans on trimming her nails.
Gaines picks Poe up and wraps her in a swaddle blanket for more control and so Poe will feel more at ease. Gaines quickly gives her the shot, to which she responds with a hiss, but after this, nothing more painful will take place.

Poe doesn’t seem too happy about Gaines trimming her nails, but she doesn’t make much of a fuss. As soon as her treatment is all done, Poe continues her day as normal and runs over to eat from her food bowl.
Gaines talks with his clients about helping Poe maintain a consistent weight, and from there the visit wraps up. Gaines will see Poe again soon.
Take the time to figure out what you love
Gaines did not begin his UMBC career thinking he’d be swaddling cats as part of his living. Originally, he majored in biochemistry and molecular biology to combine his favorite subjects from high school. Later, he added a minor in statistics, but it wasn’t until his senior year that he realized he wanted to be a veterinarian.
“In my junior year, it finally dawned on me what biochemistry was—the chemistry of living things. That led me into veterinary medicine, and my interest in how the chemicals in the medicines we use are interacting with the body,” he said.
“I like the problem-solving aspect of veterinary medicine. I always say, I could probably be an auto mechanic or something similar, too…. Figure out a problem and try to solve it—work within constraints, people’s budgets, and things like that."

After his junior year at UMBC, Gaines signed up for an organic chemistry summer research program at Texas A&M University that focused on drug design. But as he worked through the program, he found himself spending his mornings at Texas A&M’s veterinary school, talking to people about their experience, “And I said, ‘Okay, this is what I actually want to do.’ I didn’t go to college with an idea of what I wanted to do,” says Gaines. “I didn’t find it until I had one year left of undergrad.”
Gaines channeled this newfound understanding, and after UMBC, he graduated from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine with a doctorate of veterinary medicine and a master’s of public health. “I like the problem-solving aspect of veterinary medicine. I always say, I could probably be an auto mechanic or something similar, too. It’s the same job,” says Gaines. “Figure out a problem and try to solve it—work within constraints, people’s budgets, and things like that. That’s just a fun challenge, and you get to help people out, and they’re appreciative. I like all that stuff—it’s a very fun job.”
Gaines remembers how helpful the professors at UMBC were in fostering his success and helping him to figure out that he wanted to become a veterinarian. “I was able to work in Dr. Mauricio Bustos’s biology lab at UMBC. That led to me getting into that program at Texas A&M, and eventually, that’s how I found vet med.”
“It’s cool to learn there”
Standing in front of a play structure, Gaines watches his 3-year-old daughter, Opal, on the playground. Gaines explains that he enjoys the variety his job as a veterinarian gives him. Aside from doing house calls, he also works at a veterinary hospital. “One day a week I do house calls; on Wednesdays I do surgery; and Fridays I do office visits in the hospital. So every day is different,” he says.

Not only this, but he enjoys the flexibility it offers his schedule. “Like right now, I’m here watching my daughter. I’m able to provide for my family without working all the time,” he explains.
Prior to starting Catonsville Doc on the Go—his house-call veterinary business—in 2020, Gaines was working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an office job working in the export of animal products. “I found the office job unfulfilling, so I made a plan to transition to what you’d normally think of a vet—hands-on working with animals.”
Gaines met his now wife at UMBC, coincidentally, also named Taylor (Westhoff ’13). She majored in modern languages and linguistics, studying Spanish. “We never actually had any classes together, but we just met through a friend group,” he says.
“We always say we appreciate how focused on academics UMBC is,” says Gaines. “It’s not like you have to like a football team or be in a fraternity—you can just go there and learn. It’s cool to learn there.”
For now, Gaines says, he’s satisfied with his Doc on the Go business and that he enjoys making house calls. Sometimes it allows him the opportunity to treat more unique pets. “It is nice that you get to see things that people might not bring to the vet. I’ve done parrots, parakeets, and rats,” he says.
Opal chimes in, “And chickens!”
“And chickens, you’re right,” he replies.

Speaker Bios
Christi Vrban, Corporate Gerontologist
Christi Vrban leads The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence’s industry-leading mature market education programs. She is responsible for the development, delivery, and measurement of the Center’s core curriculum, utilizing multiple formats and platforms to achieve optimal learning outcomes. Christi brings her 18 years of instructional design experience and is highly skilled in producing media-rich, interactive gerontology learning courses. Christi also founded and leads The Hartford’s Working Caregivers of Older Adults community, established out of her experience of caring for her parents; this group supports employees who are providing care at various stages while working. Christi is completing her M.A. in Gerontology at USC’s Leonard Davis School of Gerontology and recently spoke at American Society of Aging’s On Aging 2024 Conference.
Rodnée Warr, Gerontologist and Executive Director
Rodnée Warr leads the Elder Client Initiatives area within Wells Fargo’s Wealth & Investment Management (WIM). Rodnée brings over 20 years of experience leading teams in legal, risk and compliance to help mitigate risks of fraud and scams among older adults. She has a master’s degree in Gerontology, providing her with unique knowledge of the psychological, sociological, and financial aspects of aging.
Currently Rodnée leads a team who provides guidance on elder and vulnerable financial exploitation and diminished capacity to Wells Fargo Advisors and Wealth Investment Management relationship managers. Her aim is to equip all Wells Fargo employees in the various business lines with the knowledge and skills to serve mature customers more effectively. Each year through her innovative curriculum, thousands of Wells Fargo employees participate in training and other programs that equip them with the knowledge and skills to serve mature customers more effectively, while enhancing employee satisfaction.
Rodnée believes that older adults are not necessarily more gullible than younger individuals, it is just that they can be retired and have more time on their hands, so they are able to entertain a conversation with scam artists. Her work includes developing and conducting specialized training tools such videos, pamphlets, brochures to directly educate consumers on elder financial exploitation and scams and how they can protect themselves.
Rodnée has presented at national events: US Treasures Conference, National Indian Council on Aging Elders Conference, North American Securities Administrators Association, Upper Midwest ACH Association and American Society on Aging.
