GREK 101 is an introduction to the elements of Ancient Greek, focusing on the vocabulary, morphology (i.e., principles of word formation), and syntax (i.e., how words fit together to be meaningful) of the language. The course aims to enable you to read prose and poetry with the aid of a dictionary and grammar handbook as soon as possible, and to prepare you for continuing study of Ancient Greek in GREK 102, Elementary Greek II. The further goal is to encourage you to pursue the study of Greek further, reading the works of ancient authors in intermediate GREK 201 and advanced 300-level or 400-level classes. The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture presents the early-career survey Levester Williams: all matters aside, an exhibition curated by Lisa D. Freiman, professor of art history at Virginia Commonwealth University

The exhibition will be accompanied by the first in CADVC's public art projection series with a new video art gallery set into the open amphitheater of the UMBC Fine Arts Building. The Opening Reception will include a public program featuring Levester Williams, Michelle Diane Wright, and Lisa Freiman.

The exhibition will open for regular hours on Friday, September 20, and will continue through December 14.

UMBC Facilities Management continues to oversee several important construction projects to UMBC’s academic buildings. The projects identified below, and on the attached graphic, will likely be the most impactful to the UMBC community during the fall 2024 semester.

The construction area around Sherman Hall continues to be closed to pedestrian traffic and will remain so until the Fall of 2025 when the construction fencing will be shifted to complete Phase 2 (east wing) of the Sherman Hall renewal project.

UMBC is also in the process of completing the repairs to the University Center second level exterior walkway, which will be completed this fall. The remaining work is taking place largely at the south plaza, adjacent to Sherman Hall. The second level walkway in front of the UC and the south plaza will be closed during this work, but will continue to serve as an emergency exit only. The north end of the second level is open for use adjacent to the Meyerhoff Chemistry Building. Access to the lower level of the UC, including Chick-fil-A and Starbucks will not be affected.

Continuing through October 2024, the exterior stair and ramp area adjacent to Lecture Hall 1, which connects the Quad and the Commons Courtyard, will be temporarily closed for ongoing exterior renovations. Beginning Wednesday, August 28, 2024 the accessible route from the lower level Biology through Lecture Hall 1 and the accessible route from the upper level of Lecture Hall 1 to the Commons Plaza will reopen. Additional temporary alternate routes include pathways through The Commons, Math/Psych and Sondheim Hall.

Signage will be provided at the impacted areas to help redirect pedestrians to alternate accessible routes. 

Accessibility is part of the design process, and we work in partnership with Accessibility and Disability Services which supports faculty, staff, students and visitors with disabilities. The Center for Social Science Scholarship is pleased to announce its new Acting Director, Dr. Eric Stokan.  

Dr. Stokan is an Associate Professor of Political Science and Affiliate in the School of Public Policy whose research examines the equitability and impacts of local government resource allocations of environmental sustainability, economic development, and community development policies. His research foci and analytic methodologies are interdisciplinary, and his scholarship makes use of advances in computational social science and data science. Stokan serves on the editorial board of the Urban Affairs Review and has had faculty affiliations with the MGMT Lab at Indiana University Bloomington and the Center for Urban Studies at Wayne State University. 

Dr. Stokan looks forward to building on the tremendous success of CS3 by continuing to elevate the work of faculty and students in the social sciences, promoting interdisciplinary and intercollegiate scholarship, and offering events, trainings, and workshops that are cutting edge and support UMBC’s R1 status.  

Stokan holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Administration at George Washington University and has a B.A. and M.A. in political science from Wayne State University.
