The Center for Social Science Scholarship is pleased to announce its new Acting Director, Dr. Eric Stokan.  

Dr. Stokan is an Associate Professor of Political Science and Affiliate in the School of Public Policy whose research examines the equitability and impacts of local government resource allocations of environmental sustainability, economic development, and community development policies. His research foci and analytic methodologies are interdisciplinary, and his scholarship makes use of advances in computational social science and data science. Stokan serves on the editorial board of the Urban Affairs Review and has had faculty affiliations with the MGMT Lab at Indiana University Bloomington and the Center for Urban Studies at Wayne State University. 

Dr. Stokan looks forward to building on the tremendous success of CS3 by continuing to elevate the work of faculty and students in the social sciences, promoting interdisciplinary and intercollegiate scholarship, and offering events, trainings, and workshops that are cutting edge and support UMBC’s R1 status.  

Stokan holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Administration at George Washington University and has a B.A. and M.A. in political science from Wayne State University.

Internships are like stepping stones for career growth. They give students real-world experience, help them learn practical skills, and build professional connections. Let's dive into why internships are so important for shaping careers and how teachers can help students make the most of them.

A Teacher's Perspective-

Dr. Snyder says, "Internships give you experience, they give you a network contact, multiple network contacts. You can use that internship experience to make some, and build upon network connections, which are extremely valuable for when you do go on your job search." Teachers like Dr. Snyder don't only teach in the classroom; they also help students find internships by giving them advice on where to look, by sending internship opportunities through mass emails, or teaching classes on how to improve their resumes and cover letters, and how to prepare for interviews. Throughout the internship search teachers offer support and feedback, guiding students through challenges and celebrating their successes.

Student Experiences - 

Melanie says internships are important so, “Get to know your professors well and don’t be afraid to ask them for advice because it may lead you down the perfect road to find your passion.” She was a communications intern for our own Retriever athletics program!


Scherrie was accepted to intern for UMBC Interdisciplinary CoLab: FindingBlackGirhood: A Digital Archive. Throughout her internship she will work with a team to create and present a beta version of the site that will contribute to creating an innovative archive of freedom. The website will include an Introduction that considers the intersections of Black girlhood and film, film descriptions, and analytical essays on each film. She says, Through internships, “I’m allowing my passion to grow and as I learn”


Finding the Right Fit: Tips for Students

If you're looking for an internship, here are some tips:

  1. Start Early: Don't wait until the last minute. Start looking and applying for internships early.

  2. Use Resources: Talk to your teachers, use career services, and go to networking events to find the right internship for you.

  3. Customize Applications: Make sure your resume and cover letter fit each internship you apply for. Show how your skills and goals match exactly what they're looking for.


Internships are like bridges that connect students to their future careers. They help students grow personally and professionally, giving them a taste of what's to come. This program is designed to offer meaningful learning experiences, mentorship, and professional development opportunities within our organization.

Program Objectives: 

Skill Development: Interns will have the opportunity to develop and enhance their skills in areas such as research, data analysis, program evaluation, communications, advocacy, community outreach, and project management. 

Public Health Practice: Interns will work on real-world public health projects and initiatives, gaining practical experience and exposure to various aspects of public health practice. 

Mentorship: Interns will be paired with experienced public health professionals who will serve as mentors, providing guidance, support, and feedback throughout the internship period.

Networking: Interns will have the opportunity to network with professionals in the public health field, including staff members, partner organizations, and community stakeholders. 

Professional Development: Interns will participate in workshops, seminars, and training sessions designed to enhance their professional skills and prepare them for future careers in public health.

Compensation: This hybrid internship program will have a paid and unpaid option. Students may apply for an hourly wage of $17 with an estimated 10-15 hours anticipated OR apply to receive academic or internship/practicum requirement completion. Interns may be eligible for academic credit if approved by their educational institution. Additionally, interns will gain valuable experience, mentorship, and networking opportunities that can contribute to their professional development and future career goals. 

Note: For students interested in earning both a stipend and credit hours will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. If interested please note this on your application in the appropriate field.  (this internship qualifies for PBHL 470)

Welcome new and returning Retrievers! CNMS Advising is excited to have everyone back on campus and we are eager to help you tackle the fall semester!


Some important reminders/updates are as follows: 


1.) The CNMS Advising Office will be holding walk-in office hours for advising support Mo-Th 10AM-12PM & 1PM-3PM in UC 205. If you are a new/incoming student please feel free to drop by at any time. Returning students should follow up with their assigned advisor (see here). Advisors can assist with schedule adjustments, registration troubleshooting, and general questions. Walk-in advising support is on a first come, first served basis and may result in a lengthy wait time during busy hours. Scheduled appointments can be arranged via email (CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu). 


2.) The last day of schedule adjustment (i.e. last day to add/drop/swap your classes) is Wednesday, September 11th.  Make sure that you are happy with your classes, that you are FULLY registered for a minimum of 12 credits (if you need to be a full-time student), and that you have established a balanced plan for the semester. Feel free to check in with your assigned advisor if you have any questions/concerns. First semester students can follow up with CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu for support.


3.) Take some time to update your record! Check your myUMBC account to determine/confirm your declared major(s). If your record does not accurately reflect your plans you can submit an updated Declaration of Major FormHERE. When completing the form, be sure to declare/ADD your new major intentions as well as remove/DELETE any unwanted programs.
