Four online talks on Security Challenges for Democratic Elections, 7-8:30am September 11, 2024

VoteXX: Extreme Coercion Resistance, Alan Sherman, UMBC

We solve a long-standing challenge to the integrity of votes cast without the supervision of a voting booth: “improper influence,” which we define as any combination of vote buying and voter coercion. In comparison with previous proposals, our system is the first in the literature to protect against a strong adversary who learns all the voter's keys- --we call this property “extreme coercion resistance.” When keys are stolen, each voter, or their trusted agents (which we call “hedgehogs”), may “nullify'” (effectively cancel) their vote in a way that is unstoppable and irrevocable and such that the nullification action is forever unattributable to that voter or their hedgehog(s). We demonstrate the security of our VoteXX system in the universal composability model. In comparison with previous proposals, our system offers some protection against even the strongest adversary who learns all keys. Other coercion-resistant protocols either do not address these attacks, place strong limitations on adversarial abilities, or rely on fully trusted parties to assist voters with their keys.

Verifiable Voting in the Wild, Steve Schneider, University of Surrey, UK

Verifiability in electronic voting systems is an approach to enabling checking of the election results independently of the system used to capture and process the votes. There have been numerous proposals in the literature for electronic voting systems designed to include verifiability, generally underpinned by cryptographic mechanisms. These typically enable voters to confirm that their vote has been captured as cast and enable observers (including the voters themselves) to verify that the votes have been counted and tallied correctly from the cast votes. The need to simultaneously ensure other requirements, such as ballot privacy and coercion-resistance, leads to voting ceremonies that can be intricate and place an additional burden on voters. This talk will describe the trial deployment of two such systems in the wild: the vVote polling place system based around Pret a Voter; and the VMV (Verify My Vote) internet voting system based around Selene. We will discuss voters’ reactions to the systems in terms of their usability and comprehensibility and consider the implications for verifiability and associated protocols in practice.

Misinformation, misperception, and the 2024 election, David Lazer, Northeastern University

This talk will evaluate the potential threats to the 2024 election. The information environment has continued to rapidly change, and with those changes come new potential vulnerabilities to the integrity of the 2024 election. This talk will examine lessons from the 2016 and 2020 elections, as well as examine some early findings regarding misinformation in the aftermath of the assassination attempt of Donald Trump.

Overseas voting reform in Japan, Yuasa Harumichi, Meiji University

Overseas voting is an important system for guaranteeing the voting rights of citizens living abroad. However, in Japan, only postal voting or voting at an embassy is permitted. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused problems such as delays to postal voting and the inability to visit embassies due to lockdowns. A method has been proposed in which voters living abroad can vote via the internet using their My Number card. In addition, we will introduce some of the problems in Japan related to elections and the internet.

Doctoral Student Tutors- Please Share With Your Departments

The UMBC Writing Center continues to support writers on campus through a research-based, peer-to-peer model. Peer tutors, themselves students at UMBC, support the writing students do for courses and for fulfillment of their degree programs. We recognize that our center predominantly serves undergraduate writers, and we understand the many ways that these writers and their contexts differ substantially from those of graduate-level writers.

While some graduate writing support exists across programs at UMBC, more can be done to create an enduring network of mentorship through writing center programs. The writing centers at UMBC and the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) have designed a pilot program to share resources for supporting the professional development and writing expertise of UMBC graduate writers. We need your help getting the word out to the students

who might want to work with us.

We are hiring UMBC graduate students, specifically doctoral students, to serve as Graduate Peer Writing Consultants (GPWCs). These GPWCs will tutor graduate writers at both UMBC and UMB, including those planning, writing, and revising theses and dissertations. GWCPs will undertake ongoing, rigorous training virtually and in-person at the UMB Writing Center in downtown Baltimore to develop their expertise in the practice and tutoring of advanced disciplinary writing. We have designed the position to accomplish three main

professional aims:

    ● support the work writers do for courses and for fulfillment of degree requirements
● provide peer-to-peer mentorship that enhances UMBC graduate students’
understanding and practice of advanced disciplinary writing
● lay a research-based foundation for GPWCs to develop as future writing educators and mentors in the academy and beyond.

Compensation starts at $17/hour, and all training is paid at this rate. The application period lasts from August 1 until September 4.

Encourage students to learn more and apply at www.umaryland.edu/writing.
Students and you can reach out to James Wright, Associate Director of the UMB Writing Center, at james.wright@umaryland.edu with any questions.
Please share the attached flyer widely.

Thank you for your time and help.

First Week Survival Kit: Day 2

<Tagline>Pack your Bag!</Tagline>

One more sleep until classes start! Are you as excited as we are? Maybe it's nervous excitement...that's okay, too! We're so happy to see so many faces on campus this week, and can't wait to see even more of you starting tomorrow!

Today's tip is to pack your bag! There's enough stress on the first morning of school without worrying too much about this. Getting into the habit of packing up the night before will help you stay calm and go to sleep without waking up constantly thinking about how you need to remember to pack your charger in the morning!

Don't leave your house/apartment/dorm room for the day until you've double- (or triple-) checked your bag for everything you need! Make sure you have:

Devices

Textbooks (if you even have any of those...)

Notebooks and writing implements

Snacks

Water bottle

Phone, keys, wallet, student ID

A sweatshirt (it can be coooooold in those lecture halls)

Lunch, if you don't plan to get it on campus somewhere

Medications, if applicable

Anything else you might need!

One more reminder: have you checked Blackboard and your UMBC email?? There might be some important reminders from your professors in there...
