Welcome to the new academic year

<Tagline>Resources to help with the new semester</Tagline>

Dear Faculty:

Greetings and welcome to the new academic year and this Fall semester! I hope you are as excited as I am for the Fall semester and this coming year. I know we are going to do great things together and I cannot wait to meet you! As we get started I wanted to share with you some reminders and resources that hopefully will be helpful as you start the semester.

Syllabus

As you put your syllabus together, please remember there are a number of resources available including theCreating a Syllabus page from the Faculty Development Center. Please be sure to also consult the website of the Office of Equity and Civil Rights forsyllabus language.

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly changing education and the Faculty Senate and the Graduate School are reviewing theGraduate Student Academic Misconduct Policy and Procedures and theUndergraduate Student Academic Conduct Policy. While these policies are being reviewed and revised to include language relevant to the use of generative AI tools, I ask you to state clearly in your syllabus what use (if any) of generative AI tools you allow in your classroom. Example statements are available from a number of universities (e.g.Texas Tech,MSU Denver).

Supporting Students and Managing Classroom Behavior

I want to make sure you are aware of UMBC’s faculty and staffdisruptive student behavior guide, which also pertains to managing your classroom. I also encourage you to regularly check in with your students to see how they are doing and ensure you guide them to resources on campus.

Finally, thank you for all you do for UMBC. You are at the heart of student success and helping UMBC students become the best version of themselves.

First Week Survival Kit: Day 1

<Tagline>Are! You! Ready?!</Tagline>

Welcome back, Retrievers! We're so happy to see so many excited folks on campus - the anticipation in the air combined with those coooooool morning temps can mean only one thing - fall is coming!

We're coming at you every day this week with a tip for getting through this insane first week! If you're nervous, just know you're not alone. Starting college (or starting at a new college, or starting a new academic year) can be really overwhelming and most students experience some degree of anxiety, even if it's the good kind!

Today, we're reminding you to check Blackboard!!! Your professors have probably made their pages live by now, so today is a great day to read through the syllabi, make sure you understand course policies, and see if there's any pre-class work you need to do before the first day. Map out all of your classes and make sure you know the routes you'll take! Be careful to consider campus construction, because some of that is still going on (we're looking at you, Sherman stairs...)

And, related: start checking your UMBC email account every day. Maybe check it two or three times a day. You know what, while you're at it, just leave that tab open in your internet browser. Download the Gmail app (UMBC is a Google campus!) on your phone and/or tablet and turn on notifications. You don't want to miss anything, and this is primarily how your professors, advisors, and clubs will communicate with you!

Announcing the new Director of the Humanities Scholars Program

<Tagline>Kate Drabinski, Principal Lecturer in GWST</Tagline>

The Dresher Center for the Humanities is pleased to announce a new director for the Humanities Scholars program.

Dr. Kate Drabinski is Principal Lecturer in Gender, Women's, +
Sexuality Studies (GWST) and Associate Director of the Women Involved in
Learning and Leadership (WILL+) program. Her focus areas of teaching
and research include queer theory, transgender studies, LGBTQ+ history,
and public humanities pedagogies and practices. As co-PI with Dr. Carole
McCann on the Mellon-funded Affirming Multivocal Humanities grant, she
organizes the UMBC LGBTQ+ Oral History Project, bringing students into
conversation with queer people both on and off campus to record and
preserve the histories of our communities. Her latest publication is Baltimore Revisited: Stories of Inequality and Resistance in a U.S. City, co-edited with UMBC's own Dr. Nicole King and Dr. Joshua Davis of the University of Baltimore.

Outside
of UMBC Dr. Kate is an avid explorer of Baltimore's history, present,
and future, usually on her much-loved bicycle. She leads walking tours
about the city's LGBTQ+ and Civil Rights histories for Baltimore
Heritage, where she serves on the Board. She organizes walking tours for
students, faculty, and staff about the history of Pratt Street, public
transportation, urban renewal, and more. She is keenly interested in why
where we are is as it is, and how it might be otherwise.

Dr.
Kate is excited to direct the Humanities Scholars program after serving
on the committee for nearly a decade and teaching the freshman seminar
several times. She was part of a similar program at her undergraduate
institution and knows intimately the power of cohort-based
interdisciplinary humanities teaching and research for making more
interesting, meaningful, and impactful lives for all of us. She looks
forward to working with students, faculty, and staff to continue
    building UMBC's vibrant humanities community.

The landlord couple resides in the home and would prefer a kind person that respects diversity that are a UMBC/UMB Graduates or Junior/Senior Undergraduates that are non-smokers within the home, non-drug users, pet-free, and a tidy person to share a large open concept newly renovated 4 bedroom and 3.5 bathroom on a dead-end quiet street.
The house is less than 2 miles from the UMBC campus and close to two shopping centers. The UMBC Shuttle and public transportation bus stop is located a short walk the next street over. The UMBC Transit runs buses almost every 25 minutes from the Paradise-Purple Line during the week from 7:25am-10pm (Leeds Avenue and Colchester Road bus stop pickup location is roughly starting around 7:45/8am). The room for rent is a first-floor bedroom master suite with private bathroom and two closets, dresser with mirror, tall dresser, full bed, two nightstands, vanity desk with stool and a smart TV, bedroom linens and bath towels. We will only rent to one female, since the house will be shared with two female UMBC students and the landlord couple too. We have lease restrictions for overnight guests and shared cleaning responsibilities. There is street parking that we ask our tenants to be respectful to our neighbors and park directly in front of our house only. We are still doing minor renovations to the outside landscaping and foundation boarder. The bedroom suite is available on August 29th and after. We prefer a 9 month or a month-to-month lease starting August ending the last week of May 2025, that includes Winter and Spring Breaks. The rent is $1,200 FIRM a month, and deposit is $600! We’re a private home and not a campus apartment or dorm, nor an Airbnb. All you need to do is bring your personal belongings and books! If interested, call 410-999-4668, Monday-Friday, 6pm to 8pm, to discuss and a time to show you the house.
