Incoming Athletics Director Tiffany Tucker brings student-centric leadership to the role

She may be new to Retriever Nation, but it seems like Tiffany D. Tucker won’t have any problem as UMBC’s leader of the pack. Addressing a crowd of student-athletes, administrators, coaches, and staff, at a press conference on Monday, Tucker, UMBC’s newly-appointed director of athletics, physical education, and recreation, made a promise to uphold the values that have become synonymous with the UMBC community.

“As we take this journey together, let’s embrace the Retriever spirit—tenacious, innovative, always punching above our weight class. Together, we will write the next chapter of UMBC’s athletic legacy,” she said.

President Shears Ashby welcomes Tucker to #RetrieverNation with her own jersey. (Photo by Eric Thompson ’12)

When Tucker was announced as UMBC’s sixth athletics director (AD) last week, she began laying the groundwork to leave a lasting legacy of her own. When she officially starts on August 15, she’ll be the first woman and person of color to lead the university’s athletics program.

“This isn’t just about making history, it’s about creating a new standard where diversity in leadership is the norm, not the exception,” said Tucker.

Seeing the whole student

Tucker joins UMBC from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where she has served as deputy athletics director since August 2021. Her appointment follows a nationwide search, during which she emerged as a highly-experienced and accomplished athletics administrator.

“Tiffany’s experience and growing leadership roles would make her a great fit for many AD positions at D1 schools. But let me tell you why she is especially perfect for us,” President Valerie Sheares Ashby said at the press conference. “Here, student-athletes can participate in a Division I program while also reaching the highest levels of academic achievement. Here, we have a diverse student body that excels academically across all subjects. We believe there is no excellence without inclusion, and to be truly inclusive, we know we need to create an environment where everyone can thrive.”

Tucker knows the mindset of an athlete firsthand. She was a four-year member of the women’s basketball team at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This experience allows her to understand the unique rigors of performing both academically and athletically. This also means that Tucker knows the value of seeing students as more than just who they are on the field, court, or track.

“As we nurture our student-athletes, we will focus on their holistic development—not just as competitors, but as scholars, leaders, and engaged citizens,” she said.

“Our program is in good hands”

Tucker will join an athletics program that has won dozens of America East titles, individual and team honors, and coaching awards. This past academic year, 12 UMBC athletic programs posted perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate Report. Implemented in 2003 as part of an ambitious academic reform effort in Division I, APR holds institutions accountable for the educational progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.

This past season, UMBC volleyball secured their fourth-straight America East championship and returned to the NCAA tournament. Volleyball head coach Kasey Crider looks forward to Tucker taking charge.

“The last couple of months have been tough, without a doubt. To be on the other side of the transition with a leader of Tiffany’s caliber is a big deal,” Crider said. “Our department has demonstrated its resolve and character, and now with her vision and guidance, it feels like we’re on the brink of something pretty special.”

Tucker addresses the crowd at a press conference on July 22. (Photo by Eric Thompson ’12)

Just one of the over two dozen student-athletes bedecked in black and gold at Monday’s press conference, volleyball player Aysia Miller ’24, biological sciences, echoed Crider’s excitement.

“Tiffany’s innovative approach and mindset give me hope that our program is in good hands,” said Miller. “As a student-athlete, it is refreshing to hear someone care so much about our well-being and success.”

Tucker made it clear that students will be her priority when she takes the helm in August. She closed yesterday’s press conference by directly addressing the student-athletes in the room.

“You are the heart and soul of UMBC athletics. Your well-being—physical, mental, and emotional—are paramount. I’m here to support you, challenge you, and celebrate you.”

Stanley's ROSES proposal selected for funding

The ROSES proposal titled “Landslide Mapping and Forecasting in Nepal,” of which Thomas Stanley (617/UMBC) is PI, has been selected for funding by the Science Mission Directorate’s Earth Science Division. The project team includes Pukar M. Amatya (617/UMBC), and Dalia B. Kirschbaum (610). The period of performance is 10/1/25-9/30/27.

Mr. Stanley provided the following detailed information about this grant:

"Landslides are an influential hazard in Nepal, resulting in both extensive loss of life and diverse indirect impacts on human well-being. Much research has already been undertaken on this subject, including numerous case studies, susceptibility maps, and rainfall analyses. However, no forecasting system exists for the whole country to enable dynamic characterization of increased landslide hazard potential. This type of information is critical for improved awareness of cascading hazards and anticipation of impacts they cause on natural and human systems. Recent progress in research geared towards predicting landslides in the Karnali Basin of far-western Nepal and the Lower Mekong River Basin as demonstrated the potential for broader implementation.

We will assist stakeholders in Nepal with the development of a decision support system that assesses landslide hazard with a lead time of 1-2 days. This system will build upon work that has been completed for the SERVIR-HKH [Hindu Kush Himalaya] node. The High-Impact Weather Assessment Toolkit (HIWAT) provides an ensemble of precipitation forecasts that have been converted to a probability-matched mean value for each location within a service area that includes Bangladesh and Nepal. With machine learning, these maps of precipitation will be combined with other predictors to produce a gridded probability of landslide occurrence with a daily 4-km resolution. We have already developed a prototype system using HIWAT and an existing landslide model for the Karnali Basin. This work will serve as the basis for broadening this system to a national scale, which would otherwise have been difficult to complete within the 2-year period of performance.

We will also produce a tool for rapid mapping of landslides from optical satellite imagery. Although previous research by our team has used very high-resolution imagery from commercial satellites, this tool will primarily rely on the Sentinel-2 mission as it provides data that is freely available to all stakeholders in Nepal. The landslide mapping tool will rely on deep learning (artificial neural networks) to segment the satellite images into geospatially referenced polygons that indicate the presence of recent landslides. In order to minimize the computational burden on stakeholders, the tool will rely on existing cloud-based platforms provided by NASA or commercial technology companies. The tool is intended to enable rapid assessment of damage from landslides in the days before officials can reach an affected area by ground transportation.

Finally, we will build the capacity of regional stakeholders through a series of annual workshops in Kathmandu, Nepal. Each workshop will take place after the end of the annual monsoon in order to enable attendance by stakeholders that have disaster management responsibilities. In the first workshop, prototypes of both the landslide forecast and the landslide mapping tool will be introduced. Extensive stakeholder consultation will be sought on the scientific approach, outputs, and visualization capabilities of each system.

The proposed work represents a significant need and demand by groups within the region and will impact decisions and actions by stakeholders in Nepal. It builds upon work already completed as part of the High Mountain Asia and related projects, including the mapping and modeling of landslides in Nepal’s Karnali Basin."

Lyric Baltimore seeks teaching artists for Horizons Theater Program.

The Lyric Baltimore’s Education team is searching for innovative, excited, and dedicated artists to provide exceptional in-school arts programming for our Horizons Theater Program. These workshops provide mostly middle school students with training in theater and creative writing. Our goal is to support students’ imagination and creative agency. Using fun, engaging exercises, students learn the necessary skills to present theatrical performances to their family and friends. These weekly workshops culminate in students performing their original writing. Each workshop site performs two shows—a holiday performance in December and a full-length production in spring. Workshops at schools run from October to December and January to March.

Updates to Middle States Self-Study Chairs

Dear Middle States Team,

Thank you for all of your hard work to support UMBC’s accreditation process by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). We deeply appreciate the work of our steering committee and working groups throughout the summer as we dive into planning for and writing the first draft of our Self-Study.

We are pleased to share with you changes to our Self-Study chairs. As Interim Provost David Dauwalder concludes his time at UMBC, we are thrilled to welcome our new Provost Manfred H.M. van Dulmen as a chair of this effort.

We are deeply grateful for the leadership provided by Interim Provost Dauwalder as the team created our self-study design, hosted Terence Peavy, vice president for institutional field relations at MSCHE on campus, received approval for our design, and began the process of gathering evidence and drafting our self-study. His extensive experience at other institutions and his strategic insights into UMBC’s strengths and growth opportunities were an invaluable part of this process.

We are excited to welcome Provost van Dulmen to our efforts and he has already shared a number of helpful ideas and feedback that will inform the work ahead of us. We plan to host an in person meeting in the fall so that all of the team members can connect and meet him in person.

Most importantly, all of us wish to express our gratitude for the hard work of the steering committee, core team, and evidence inventory committee last semester and so far this summer. This effort would not be possible without you. Thank you!
