I'm an incoming freshman (18 and female) looking for off campus housing near UMBC. I've been waitlisted for on campus housing, so I've been a bit stressed with where I'd find accommodation. I would prefer a place a place that I can bike to and from campus to, near a UMBC bus stop, safe, and if there are roommates I would prefer females as well.

If you are interested in tutoring for math and digital design fundamentals, please e-mail me at johnm10@umbc.edu subject: Tutoring. $35/hr, I come to you or we can meet in the RLC or other location on campus. I am open to tutoring small groups as well as individuals.
I am not a UMBC employed tutor. UMBC provides free tutoring in the academic success center, computing success center, and other departments for a variety of subjects ranging from computer programming to physics to AI to VLSI design.
I tutor the following:
- Algebra and Precalculus
- Calc 1 & Analytic Geometry (MATH 151)
- Intro to Digital Design (CMPE 212)
Algebra and Precalculus are particularly important for people trying to apply to UMBC, so if you know anyone who needs to pass the placement exam and get into MATH 151, I can help them as well.
Intro to Digital Design is an important gateway for the Computer Engineering degree; the material is not difficult, but it can be alien and bizarre for those new to digital design.
I'm also familiar with Calc & Analytic Geometry 2 (MATH 152, way fun stuff) and linear algebra, but I got Cs in both courses and intend to retake linear algebra (it's incredibly useful), so I am not tutoring these at this time. I seriously recommend watching
Essence of Linear Algebra before attempting MATH 221 because this school doesn't provide adequate resources for the professors: most institutions have elementary linear algebra as 4 credits, with a 1-hour discussion session, and
Computational Linear Algebra looks extremely promising; at UMBC, professors get 3 hours of lecture per week to teach students, with no discussion section.

An appeal against caffeine sale on campus
Bring your own, but don't force it down our throats anymore
I respond terribly to caffeine; but more important than me is the impact of caffeine on people's sleep and thus on their health and academic performance. I present a simple appeal: cease sales of caffeine on campus; allow students to bring their own.
Why cease sales?
I believe it is everyone's right to make their own health decisions. I do not have moral issues with the recreational use of drugs; I do, however, caution everyone that the recreational use of drugs can have serious consequences for your health. As far as I am concerned, this is a personal choice without relevant ethical concerns.
The continued sale of caffeine on campus erodes that personal choice.
Consider how many people get a soda because they're thirsty, not because they want caffeine. People who want caffeine buy energy drinks, which are really just stimulant drinks, especially considering they're now sugar-free and thus don't even contain any energy. This means lots of unintentional, casual caffeine consumption.
Caffeine is tachyphylaxic, meaning it produces physical dependency almost immediately. Withdrawal symptoms begin on discontinuation after only small amounts of caffeine consumption for a short time. This leads to a rapid cycle of dependence and a need to consume more caffeine.
I happen to like Dr. Pepper, and cola, and the like; and in fact you can get caffeine free cherry coke, caffeine free vanilla Dr. Pepper, and whatever else. Nevertheless, if I'm buying a soda, I am restricted to Sprite or ginger ale, or grape soda if it's available, because I can't make it halfway through a bottle of CocaCola before I feel like I'm dying, and I'll continue to feel terrible for hours. Even without this unusual response, the cycle of dependence affects any normal human being.
You can of course drink a caffeine free Dr. Pepper and a 5-Hour Energy, but you can't remove the caffeine from a regular Dr. Pepper. This is a mild form of coercion to get people to drink more caffeine and ultimately to need more caffeine to avoid withdrawal effects.
I mentioned earlier the health concerns with caffeine. You are free to bring your own, consume energy drinks and NoDoze as you please, as long as you understand the consequences. Caffeine's tachyphylaxis causes a need for continuous use; however, it also disrupts sleep when it wears off. Caffeine does not wake you up, then put you into a sound sleep from withdrawal; rather, the withdrawal ruins your sleep architecture, and then on top of caffeine withdrawal the next morning you also have sleep deprivation. This produces a lot of health risks, including cardiovascular risk; more directly relevant to college students, it reduces cognitive function, requiring you to spend more time studying to get the same grades, and leaving less time for leisure.
It is trivially easy to get caffeine, even without most of the drinks on campus containing caffeine; it is much more effort to avoid caffeine. If the government put Welbutrin in the water supply to medicate everyone against depression, there would be enormous protests even though you can go out of your way to buy bottled water and avoid it; but it's somehow perfectly fine for almost every drink in existence to contain a pretty garbage stimulant. This situation needs to be remedied: stop stocking the machines with caffeinated cola, caffeinated Dr. Pepper, caffeinated everything; make the on-campus restaurants remove the caffeine from their fountain drinks. Coffee contains caffeine, that's what caffeine is, the name is derived from coffee; it makes sense to have regular coffee and a decaf option, if you buy coffee you are explicitly asking for caffeine. Stop putting it in everything else.
At least think about it for a while.

We wanted to inform you about an upcoming Charter Program rate change. Rest assured, our commitment to providing a high-quality charter service remains unwavering. Since its inception, our Charter Program has maintained consistent rates. However, due to rising inflationary costs, including fuel, maintenance, and labor, we must adjust our rates to continue providing a viable and reliable charter service for our campus community.
Effective at the start of the upcoming fiscal year, the new charter rates will be as follows:
- $90 per hour for our 28-32 passengers' buses
- $125 per hour for our 52 passengers' motorcoaches
- $4 per mile beyond the first 30 miles

Inheritance Baltimore and the Struggle for Just Futures
Conference -- Nov. 14 to 16, 2024
The Inheritance Baltimore and the Struggle for Just Futures: Cultural Work as Reparations conference will be held from November
14 to 16, 2024. It represents the culmination of four years of community engaged archival practice, Black
cultural
arts programing, applied teaching and learning pedagogy, anti-racist
research and practice, and cultural practitioners' development.
The conference was put together In
partnership with diverse Black Baltimore cultural and religious
organizations. In a summative and culminating way, the conference will share the lessons
learned with the larger community.

We have launched the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) module in Kuali. The week of June 15th we moved IBC to the electronic software system, Kuali. This is a soft go live so we will be working with faculty members to get their current IBCs in the Kuali System of record. This transition begun the week of June 15th and will run until September. The expectation is that all faculty will have their current active IBC Protocols in the Kuali system by then. Our IBC Division within the Office of Research Protection and Compliance (ORPC). ORPC’s IBC division and the RAS (Kuali) group will be assisting you with the transition of your approved protocol forms into Kuali. Please note it is important to only input materials and methods that has been previously approved by the IBC committee. Otherwise, the system is ready for submission of any new protocols.

Under
UMBC’s Strategic Awards for Research Transitions (START) program, the proposal titled “Space Weather Effects on Ionospheric E-region Electron Density as observed by Global Navigation Satellite System Radio Occultation Missions” was selected for funding. The PI is
Jude Salinas (613/UMBC), with collaborators Dong Wu (613/NASA),
Jae N. Lee (613/UMBC), Nimalan Swarnalingam (675/CUA) and Daniel Emmons (Air Force Institute of Technology). The period of performance is July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025.
Dr. Salinas’ research specialty is in atmospheric and space physics, and this encompasses research in both Earth Sciences (atmospheric physics) and Heliophysics (space physics/weather) Divisions. He explained to us that "there is a sub-field that actually combines atmospheric and space physics, called "atmosphere-ionosphere coupling". Wind patterns (e.g. gravity waves, planetary-scale waves) triggered near the surface (e.g., meteorological/terrestrial weather) can actually propagate up to the ionosphere. These winds along with the stronger influence of Earth’s magnetic field can then move ionized species (e.g., electrons) in the ionosphere. This motion isn’t straightforward though because they are governed by the laws of electrodynamics. Hence, some of these movements are actually referred to as "electric currents". Simultaneously, influence from solar and geomagnetic phenomena also affects these ionized species, albeit mostly through chemical reactions. For a long time, the prevailing theory was that most of the variability in the ionosphere must solely be driven by solar and geomagnetic phenomena because it is just too high for any lower atmospheric influence. But in recent decades and through the help of a number of NASA missions, it has become clear that space weather does involve both solar/geomagnetic phenomena and terrestrial weather."
The ionosphere is divided into three layers, with auroras in the E- and F-regions (but not D-); additionally, the major source of electrons in the E-region is NO+ and O2+. One of the outstanding issues of space weather is the lack of observations and knowledge of the E-region ionosphere (~90 km to ~120 km) and its response to geomagnetic activity. Through funds from START, the team aims to quantify the climatological average of E-region electron density’s response to the current level of geomagnetic activity. This will be done by analyzing and quantifying the dependencies of E-region electron density on geomagnetic indices as observed by past and current
GNSS RO measurements.

Parking Lot 8 - Partial Closure
Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024
On Tuesday 7/02/2024 a significant
portion of parking Lot 8 will be closed in order to remove a temporary trailer
at the UMBC Police Station. The east and north sections of Lot 8 will be closed
for the entire day in order to allow construction vehicles to navigate through
the area. A smaller portion will remain open. Overflow parking will be
available in Lot 22 (directly across Hilltop Circle from Lot 8) during this
time. Signs will be posted to direct vehicles through the area and Facilities
Management, Parking Services and UMBC Police staff will be onsite to help
direct traffic. The accessible parking spaces on the PAHB side of Lot 8 will
not be affected by this closure.
Accessibility is part of the
design process, and we work in partnership with Accessibility and Disability
Services which supports faculty, staff, students and visitors with
disabilities. If you have a concern about accessibility or want to inquire

Lot 8 Space Closure on July 2
Significant Portion of Lot to be Unavailable
On Tuesday, July 2, a significant portion of Lot 8 will be closed so that Facilities Management can remove a temporary trailer at the UMBC Police Station. The east and north sections of Lot 8 will be closed for the entire day in order to allow construction vehicles to navigate through the area.
A smaller portion will remain open. Overflow parking will be available in Lot 22 (directly across Hilltop Circle from Lot 8) during this time. Signs will be posted to direct vehicles through the area and Facilities Management,
Parking Services and UMBC Police staff will be onsite to help direct traffic. The accessible parking spaces on the PAHB side of Lot 8 will not be affected by this closure.
Accessibility is part of the design process. Facilities will work in partnership with Accessibility and Disability Services to ensure accessible parking needs are met.
