Debuting in the Fall 2024 semester, the Department of English is now home to a new Critical Disability Studies minor.

Students in this interdisciplinary minor will encounter both the lived experiences of disability, past and present, and a critical analysis of intersecting systems of ableism, heteropatriarchy, white supremacy, colonialism, and capitalist violence.

To earn a minor in Critical Disability Studies, students will complete 15 credits of coursework: one introductory course (3 credits), two core courses (6 credits), and two elective courses (6 credits).

  • AGNG 200 - Aging People, Policy and Management (multiple sections)
  • ENGL 320 - Disability and Technology: Writing, Design, and Resistance (Dr. Drew Holladay)

On June 13, 2024 AFAC and UMBC lost our dear colleague and fellow educator Dr. Jon Squire.  

Jon was a valued member of AFAC as the COEIT representative through 2021. He led development of our web site and remained committed to the needs of adjuncts and insuring the highest value in COEIT's academic offerings. He brought fresh insight to our meetings and his opinoins were always valued. 

Jon joined COEIT as an adjunct faculty member in 1999, dedicating 22 years to educating and mentoring students in the department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. 

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his presence in the UMBC community. Despite our heartbreak, we also celebrate his life and the legacy.  His obituary may be found here:

Family and friends are invited to Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, PA 12nd Ave, SW, Glen Burnie, MD 21061 on Wednesday, June 19 from 2pm to 4pm and from 6pm to 8pm. A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Thursday June 20, 2024 at 11am.

These awards are agency-wide. 

Congratulations to Vanderlei Martins (613/UMBC), Director of Earth and Space Institute, on this well-deserved recognition! 

J. Vanderlei Martins received an Exceptional Public Service Medal, one of the highest awards given to a non-government employee: "For exceptional sustained effort, vision, and leadership in delivering the Hyper Angle Rainbow Polarimeter (HARP2) to NASA's PACE mission."
