Anyone on the job market knows about the importance of the résumé. This is typically an employer’s first look at who you are and what you bring to the table. That’s why it’s crucial that you can make your résumé stand out from the rest.

Lead with the most relevant information. This refers to both categories and individual bullet points. You want to lead with the most important information on the top and left-hand side of the page, as well as within sections.

Your personalized LinkedIn URL. At the top of your résumé with the rest of your contact information, you can add your LinkedIn URL. Need a personalized URL that’s not full of random numbers and letters? Go to your profile, and on the right side you’ll see an option to edit "Public profile & URL.” If you need assistance with this, schedule a LinkedIn appointment with a career advisor.

Course projects. If your résumé is lacking in terms of work experiences, you can include projects from your classes. Just list the name of the project and/or course and include a few bullet points highlighting what you did. Remember: coursework experiences do count as work experiences!

Relevant coursework. By listing relevant courses, you can demonstrate that you have foundational knowledge in key areas related to the job you’re applying for. You can also show that you’ve learned specialized skills in a specific area of study.

Skills as categories. These can be comprised of hard skills (e.g., programming languages, statistical analyses, data analysis), soft skills (e.g., communication, leadership, problem-solving), and transferable skills (e.g., customer service, research skills, presentation skills).

Extracurricular activities. Adding these to your résumé can demonstrate leadership potential. They also can help highlight transferable skills that you otherwise may not be able to show on your résumé.

The learned behaviors of AI and robot agents should align with the intentions of their human designers. Toward this goal, people must be able to easily specify, inspect, and model agent behaviors. For specifications, we will consider expert-written reward functions for reinforcement learning (RL) and non-expert preferences for reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). I will show evidence that experts are bad at writing reward functions: even in a trivial setting, experts write specifications that are overfit to a particular RL algorithm, and they often write erroneous specifications for agents that fail to encode their true intent. Next, I will show that the common approach to learning a reward function from non-experts in RLHF uses an inductive bias that fails to encode how humans express preferences, and that our proposed bias better encodes human preferences both theoretically and empirically. For inspection, humans must be able to assess the behaviors an agent learns from a given specification. I will discuss a method to find settings that exhibit particular behaviors, like out-of-distribution failures. Lastly, cognitive science theories attempt to show how people build conceptual models that explain agent behaviors. I will show evidence that some of these theories are used in research to support humans, but that we can still build better curricula for modeling. Collectively, my research provides evidence that—even with the best of intentions— current human-AI systems often fail to induce alignment; my research proposes promising directions for how to build better aligned human-AI systems.

You have taken on the role of a passionate Baltimore native and avid baseball fan. Your mission is clear: Gunnar Henderson, your hometown hero, is vying for the prestigious title of MLB MVP. But there is a catch—he is trailing behind and needs an additional ONE MILLION (1,000,000) votes to secure his victory.

However, the online voting platform the MLB uses appears to restrict each user to a single vote. With this limitation in place, your task is to manipulate the system and ensure Gunnar gets the support he deserves.
About Course Creation

Bb shells for SU2024 are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there is an instructor of record listed. As new course sections and/or instructors are added to the SOC by Department Scheduling Coordinators, corresponding Bb shells are automatically generated overnight.

If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the SOC, please see your Departmental Scheduling Coordinator to resolve the issue. Once you are listed in the SOC, your Bb course shell will be created automatically.

If you and your Department Scheduling Coordinator believe you are correctly assigned as the instructor of record in the SOC and you do not see your course shell in Blackboard, please submit a Request Tracker (RT) ticket via my.umbc.edu/help.

If you need a Bb shell for a research or independent study course, please submit a new course request.

Instructors who teach multiple sections of the same course will find those enrollments merged into one Bb course shell. These sections may be split upon request by an RT ticket, which we recommend submitting at least one week before the semester starts, if not as soon as courses are created in Blackboard. NOTE: Courses should not be split after student grade data and engagement activity is recorded since it will be purged as part of the separation process.

Student enrollment in Bb mirrors the official registration in SA and updates hourly. However, courses are not accessible to students by default until the instructor of record makes them available.

Connect with Instructional Technology

As always, if you have any questions about teaching, learning, and technology at UMBC, consider the following options:
