200 Years of Toxic Disavowal in South Baltimore

<Tagline>HCST Lecture with Chloe Ahmann</Tagline>

    Hi friends,

I hope this email finds you better than ever and enjoying this beautiful weather! <3 I'm just writing to remind y'all of a super interesting lecture happening TODAY (that's co-sponsored by the Philosophy Department! :))

Event Description:

Time Bomb: Two Hundred Years of Toxic Disavowal in Late Industrial South Baltimore

In December 2021, South Baltimoreans watched as a devastating blast at the CSX coal terminal broke windows and sent a thick layer of carcinogenic coal dust into the air, which coated every surface in a 12-block radius. Deliberations at the city, state, and corporate level since have concerned how to prevent the next catastrophe. Palatable interventions range from promoting better coordination between industry and first responders in the event of trouble, to improving neighborhood alerts, to facilitating mass displacement. Decidedly off the table have been meaningful responses to the everyday disasters that have cut lives short on this industrial peninsula for the past two centuries.

South Baltimore has seen such a drama unfold before—most spectacularly during the late Cold War, when industrial accidents were on the rise and residents made sick over years of toxic exposure were moved to organize for recompense. Rather than politicize their health to do so, they learned to dramatize their imminent demise in the event of the next emergency. In the sense that they eventually secured a buyout of their homes, this argument was a success. But it hinged on an agreement to limit charges to the hypothetical. It proceeded as if the gravest obstacles to life lay then, in the devastating future, and not now, ambient and tedious. Examining how residents came to strike this painful bargain, the bleak conditions that made it seem like their best choice, and the painful resonance of both in the wake of the CSX explosion, I consider what it means to privilege an analysis that works over an analysis that speaks to life as lived—especially when the former holds that a hypothetical death carries more political value than a real one.

Study Tip of the Week: Get Ready for Summer!

<Tagline>It's just around the corner...</Tagline>

Welcome to our Weekly Study Tip post! This week, we're not really talking about studying, but something equally important: how to get ready for summer! It may be chilly today, but trust us when we say that the summer will be upon us sooner than you think.

You can check out our YouTube video for some hints -- we hope you find it helpful!

1. Set some Goals

If you start your summer with goals, that’ll give you some structure on how to plan your days, weeks, and months. Maybe there’s something you can do every day (or most days) to build up a skill in a certain area?

Perhaps you're gearing up for a second attempt at CHEM101. A daily practice might be to get ready for this by doing 15 minutes each day of Khan Academy Chemistry. Maybe you're trying to get ready for some upper-level biology coursework - our tip here is to start reading papers related to those topics so you're ready for that big syllabus come fall! You can use the library website to search for journals that relate to your interests, or ask a faculty member for some tips at their office hours.

2. Ask for Advice

Want some advice on how to stay fresh for fall courses, or perhaps what to be reading this summer? Talk to a professor.

Looking to build your resume? Talk to someone in the Career Center.

General productivity tips? Ask your advisor, a success coach, or even

your academic advocate if they can give you some advice!

3. Keep Busy!

You might be working as a lifeguard or restaurant server, getting clinical hours, or doing an awesome internship or program. But if you're finding yourself twiddling your thumbs, here are some great ways to keep yourself busy:

Read for an hour each day. It doesn't have to be related to your major. Just the act of focusing on something intently for an hour (put that phone on silent!) will help you ease back into school in the fall

Use Khan Academy or YouTube to brush up on foundational skills for your upcoming courses

Volunteer - whether it's a hospital, food pantry, or somewhere else, this will help you find some purpose and practice talking to new people (which is great for your networking skills). Get in touch with the Shriver Center if you're not sure where to start!

Go on some nerdy deep dives -- is there a cool podcast about something that interests you? Find ways to really enjoy learning

Thermal imagery captured in the Long Wave Infrared (LWIR) spectrum has long-played a vital role in thermal physiology. Signs of stress and inflammation which are unseen in the visible spectrum, can be detected in LWIR due to principles of blackbody radiation. As a result, thermal facial imagery provides a unique modality for physiological assessment of states such as chronic pain. In this presentation, I will provide a presentation of my research into image registration to align visible-thermal images that serve as a prerequisite for image- to-image translation using conditional GANs and Diffusion Models. I will share recent work leading research with the National Institutes of Health applying this research in a real-world setting on cancer patients suffering from chronic pain.

Why did you choose to major in INDS?

I graduated high school knowing that I wanted to combine my interests in architecture and meteorology, as well as my academic skills in engineering-related sciences, to major in something similar to architectural engineering. I had no plans on moving out of state, so when I came for freshman orientation at UMBC, I met with Dr. Kenneth Baron to discuss my aspirations, and he advised me to major in INDS to craft my own degree that would incorporate all of these disciplines as none of the existing majors encapsulated my interests fully. It was so interesting to hear that was possible, and I am fortunate to this day to have had that opportunity at UMBC.

Since that day, the INDS department has supported me and helped guide me to refine my degree to include not only architecture, meteorology, and engineering, but also the crucial component of social science, which helps address how to meet communities’ needs when making structures, and the community itself, more resilient. I strongly feel my current comprehensive understanding of the field was only possible because I was able to take an interdisciplinary path through different departments’ courses. The overall experience contributed to my confidence and passion in this field, so I am always excited to talk to others about both my degree and the INDS program overall.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?

I originally sought to immediately obtain a Master of Architecture in graduate school, but am now instead planning on working at a location that will assist in paying for graduate school as I want to utilize that degree to assist with licensure and other future career opportunities. In the long term, I aspire to work for either a state or federal agency, such as FEMA, and provide a perspective that better incorporates communities’ needs when preparing them for natural disasters, and especially assisting after disasters, by making the structures and community more resilient.
