Challenge Name: Unbreakable Encryption
You've been tasked with reverse engineering an encryption system being used by a group of cyber criminals. Luckily for you, your team has managed to recover the python code (crack_this.py) for the encryption program. The bad news is that they couldn't get their hands on the decryption code. Worse yet, there's a crucial message (encrypted_flag.txt) that needs to be decrypted ASAP. See if you can figure out a way to find the text that produces the encrypted flag when run through the attached program.

Spreading the word: Ebony Sneaker Ball and Award Ceremony!
Hello Everyone!
The Black Graduate Student Organization is happy to announce the 5th Annual Ebony Sneaker Ball and Award Ceremony, which will be held on Saturday, April 20th, at 5 PM in the University Center Ballroom. Join us for a night of networking and celebrating Black excellence!
There will be performances, music curated by DJ Earthkwak, and food! We are also excited to announce our keynote speaker, Johanna LeBlanc, J.D., a Haitian-American International Lawyer who specializes in foreign affairs and global politics.
Tickets are now on sale! Tickets are $15 for students (this includes young children in grade school) and $20 for the general public (this includes faculty and staff). You can use this hyperlink to purchase BGSO Tickets.

Machine Learning for Bioprocess Sensor Innovation
UMBC's Prof. Govind Rao interviewed for GEN News article
Machine learning (ML) could allow drug firms to create predictive process models that optimize development, production, and quality control. But, before embracing ML on the factory floor, manufacturers will need data to “train” the computer algorithms that drive the approach. And this means having process sensors sophisticated enough to track multiple parameters in real-time in highly complex cell cultures according to an industry expert.
Machine learning is a specialized form of artificial intelligence in which computer programs learn to solve tasks or understand the dynamics of complex systems with minimal or no direction. The process is iterative, and the solutions improve over time as more data is introduced.
This need for training data is driving innovation in process sensors, says Govind Rao, PhD, who is director of the
Center for Advanced Sensor Technology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
“At the end of the day, AI/ML tools will allow for process monitoring to be simplified once data are generated at scale to relate process conditions to critical quality attributes. The need to run QC tests on quarantined bulk drug substance will be greatly reduced,” he explains. “However, to get there will require high-density process monitoring to allow ML/AI algorithms to relate process conditions to off-line measurements such as glycosylation, aggregation, etc.”

UMBC Unites for Solar Eclipse Spectacle
UMBC Witnesses Eclipse: A Dance of Sun and Moon
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) recently hosted a rare astronomical event: a solar eclipse, which excited our academic community. With safety being our top priority, UMBC honored the event by distributing protective eclipse glasses to ensure that everyone could enjoy the spectacle safely. Students, faculty, and staff gathered on the greens, eyes skyward as the moon made its majestic transit across the sun.
This extraordinary gathering exemplified UMBC's culture of inquiry and togetherness. As the moon cast its shadow, the daylight faded. It also provided as a stark reminder of the awe and scale of everything that is around us.
The solar eclipse watching was more than simply a scientific exercise; it was a unique opportunity for social thought and inspiration. UMBC hope to create additional events that showcase the connection between education, community, and the natural environment around us.

Tonight will be covering Linux Hardening/Security, in particular, in Competition Settings. You will have the chance to hear directly from a current team member, about their best practices. This meeting will be incredibly useful if you plan on trying-out for the competition team, regardless of the OS you choose. So, if you are interested in getting involved with the official UMBC cyber competition team or just want to know more about Linux Security, you definitely want to attend the meeting tonight!
