<Title>Shuman contributes to EO Item on Landsat program LEAPS</Title>

    <div class="html-content">In a recent Earth Observatory item, <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/152623/scenes-from-the-polar-night" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">"Scenes from the Polar Night,"</a> the ability for the Landsat-8 and -9 satellites to see in the dark is highlighted. Scientists discovered that with the 2022 launch of LEAP, <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/data/leap-landsat-extended-acquisitions-poles-imaging-plan#:~:text=Landsat%20Extended%20Acquisitions%20of%20the%20Poles%20(LEAP)%20imaging%20plan%20is,and%20Arctic%20sea%20ice%20geographies." rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Landsat Extended Acquisitions of the Poles</a>, they can track the surface of ice in winter, "even with low or no light." From the mosaic of images collected by Landsat, a clear view of the details and variety of ice features is revealed. Glaciologist <a href="https://gestar2.umbc.edu/directory/researchers-r-z/#Shuman" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Christopher Shuman</a> (615/UMBC) comments, "The contrast between the cold polar ice and the warmth that’s preserved in the ocean waters is so evident."     <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>TODAY, Friday, April 5th is the deadline to withdraw from individual courses "W" OR change grading methods to Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory "S/U".</span></p>
    <p><br></p>
    <p><span>W/S/U course options count as an attempt in the class but do NOT impact your GPA.</span></p>
    <p><br></p>
    <p><span>If withdrawing from one or more courses will bring you to less than full time status (12 credits) there may be impacts in other areas such as </span><a href="https://scholarships.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>scholarship</span></a><span>, </span><a href="https://financialaid.umbc.edu/contact/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>financial aid</span></a><span>, and </span><a href="https://reslife.umbc.edu/rlexperience/procedures/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>on-campus housing</span></a><span>. Questions about those areas should be directed to the appropriate office.</span></p>

    <span>Anxiety Toolbox is a series of 3 workshops designed to help people learn about anxiety and some basic skills to help identify and manage anxious thoughts and behaviors.  </span><div>
    <br><div>This first session focuses on understanding what anxiety is and uses activities and breathing exercises to begin the practice of building your toolbox!</div>
    <div>
    <br><div>This is a non-clinical series provided by Retriever Integrated Health, so no appointments or consultations are required and any UMBC community member can join this virtual session!  If you can only make it to 1 or 2 of the workshops, that's ok too. </div>

<Title>UMBC &amp; GESTAR II hosted UN-ITU Focus Group's annual workshop</Title>

    <span>The United Nations International Telecommunications Union (UN-ITU) Focus Group on <strong><a href="https://www.itu.int/en/ITU-T/focusgroups/ai4ndm/Pages/default.aspx" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">AI for Natural Disaster Management</a></strong> scheduled its annual international workshop. This year, </span><a href="https://appliedsciences.nasa.gov/what-we-do/disasters" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">NASA’s Disasters Program</a><span> led the organization of this workshop, which was hosted at UMBC's arena, from March 13-14. This was arranged as a collaboration between UMBC's GESTAR II team and NASA Disasters Program Leadership, Dr. Shanna McClain. </span><a href="https://gestar2.umbc.edu/directory/researchers-a-f/#Albayrak" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Arif Albayrak</strong></a><span> (618/UMBC) and </span><a href="https://gestar2.umbc.edu/directory/researchers-a-f/#Emberson" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Robert Emberson</strong></a><span><strong> </strong>(617/UMBC) were both involved in organizing this workshop.</span><div>
