Intern of the Week: Vamshi Krishna Ginna

In this role, my responsibilities spanned database design, API development, and the deployment of the application on AWS. A significant focus of my work has been on the backend system, where I designed and implemented GraphQL-based Restful APIs, leveraging JWT tokens for authentication and implementing role-based authorization. Additionally, I contributed to the Angular Framework for the frontend, seamlessly integrating it with the developed APIs.

This internship has provided me with a comprehensive experience as a full-stack developer, allowing me to engage in the entire application development lifecycle – from design to testing and deployment. The company culture is excellent.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I first became aware of the opportunity for my current position during the summer of 2023. Upon learning about it, I promptly submitted my application through the Handshake platform. Following that, I underwent a rigorous selection process consisting of four rounds of interviews. These included a preliminary telephonic interview, an online technical assessment, an in-person coding evaluation, and culminated in a final discussion with the CEO. Subsequently, I commenced my role at Ardent Privacy in August 2023, where I have been actively contributing since.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
Handshake

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
One aspect of my role as a Fullstack developer at Ardent Privacy that I particularly cherish is the chance to build digital solutions to address contemporary challenges. At Ardent Privacy, I've been fortunate to be involved in every facet of the product development journey – from the initial brainstorming sessions where ideas are conceived, to the meticulous design and development phases, all the way through to the final deployment. This holistic involvement not only enables me to see the direct impact of my contributions but also fosters a sense of ownership and fulfillment as I witness our solutions come to life.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
My dedication to excellence and innovation has led to streamlined processes, improved efficiency, and enhanced user experiences, contributing positively to both project outcomes and organizational goals.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
When pursuing an internship or similar opportunity, I would advise fellow students to avoid simply applying to any available position. Instead, carefully assess whether your skills and experiences align with the requirements of the role. Focus on seeking out opportunities where you can genuinely contribute and add value. By taking this approach, you not only increase your chances of securing a meaningful and fulfilling experience but also ensure that you make the most of the opportunity to learn and grow in your chosen field.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

The Career Center has been an essential resource for me since 2022, even before I arrived in the USA from India. Their resume reviews and guidance were instrumental in securing a graduate assistantship prior to my arrival. Their support has been integral to refining my resume and preparing me for the industry, ensuring I'm well-equipped for success.

CMSC-491/691 Cybersecurity Research (INSuRE), Fall 2024

In fall 2024, UMBC will offer the cybersecurity research course CMSC-491/691 Special Topics in Computer Science: Cybersecurity Research (INSuRE). Professor Alan Sherman will teach it Tues/Thurs 10am-11:15am in ILSB 237, plus some remote sessions Friday 1:30-3:30pm as needed for the common sessions across all universities offering INSuRE. Working in a small group of at least two students, each student will carry out a research project, under the guidance of a project mentor from NSA or a national lab.

Each semester, approximately one dozen universities across the US participate in INSuRE. By INSuRE central policy, enrollment will be limited to at most 20 students per university. UMBC offers INSuRE once every two years. The next edition will be in fall 2026.

Each group carries out a standard or custom project. Mentors suggest standard projects, which embody a significant degree of flexibility to permit considerable customization. Any group that wishes to pursue a custom project must submit to me, and have approved, a written proposal by August 1, 2024, prior to the beginning of the course. Each group must have at least two members, and at most five members (three is ideal). Collaborative research is an essential aspect of INSuRE; any student wishing to carry out solo research (group size one) is invited to register for independent study.

Each student must be able to carry out an original research project in cybersecurity. That does not necessarily mean that extensive background in cybersecurity is necessary or sufficient. Each student needs to be motivated and be able to learn what is needed. Each student requires some expertise in some relevant area. There will be a wide variety of suggested standard projects. It is helpful to have a basic CS background (e.g., 411, 421, and 441) and some cybersecurity experience (e.g., 426). But there are no absolute specific prerequisites, except willingness and ability to carry out original research in cybersecurity. It is not necessary that the student has taken all specified courses.

Even though NSA provides mentors, INSuRE is an unclassified course open to all students, including F1 students who are neither US citizens nor permanent residents.

There will be an opportunity for INSuRE groups to apply for possible research support for summer 2025, to continue work on their project. In summer 2023, one of the UMBC groups (on protocol analysis including PhD student Enis Golaszewski) was one of the four or five projects in the nation funded by NSA under INSuRE+C.
