Celebrating the Class of 2024

Dear Faculty and Staff,

We hope that you will join us in celebrating the Class of 2024 by participating in UMBC’s Spring Commencement ceremonies. You have played important roles in supporting our students throughout their journeys at UMBC, and so we hope you will join us in celebrating graduates and their families at the ceremonies.

  • Graduate School Ceremony: Wednesday, May 22, 10 a.m.
  • Undergraduate #1 (CAHSS, Erickson, and Social Work): Thursday, May 23, 10 a.m.  
  • Undergraduate #2 (COEIT, CNMS and INDS): Thursday, May 23, 3 p.m. 

Faculty and staff who wish to march in the procession should sign up and order their regalia as soon as possible. Regalia can be ordered here. Those who wish to volunteer as event staff can sign up here.

In addition, if you or your immediate family member is graduating this spring, we can reserve up to five seats for you and your guests. Please email us at the email below to reserve your seats by May 9. Please note: this amenity is only for current UMBC faculty and staff members and is not for the general student body.

CADVC is excited to present “Not Grounded: the 2024 IMDA MFA Thesis Exhibition” from April 5 to April 27. This year's MFA exhibition features graduate student artists Elly Kalantari, Andrew Liang, Kristin Putchinski and Ann Zellhofer.


Please celebrate with the Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture, and the artists of the UMBC Intermedia and Digital Arts Master’s Program at the opening reception on April 4, from 5 pm to 7 pm. All are welcome!

Dresher Center Faculty Working Groups are collaborative, interdisciplinary communities of scholars working on humanities projects, research concerns, or matters of public interest. The Dresher Center provides support for the formation of these groups in an effort to promote intellectual exchange and support research activity in the humanities among scholars across campus. Working groups meet regularly and can use their funds to travel to sites or archives, host speakers, explore technologies, create new resources or materials, or other similar activities.

Faculty Working Groups can apply for up to $1,000 in annual support ($500 per semester) for their first-year activities. While faculty may come from any UMBC department, priority will be given to groups with at least one member from a humanities department.

Fundable activities include travel to sites or archives, speaker presentations, use/purchase of technology, creation of resources or materials, and support for regular meetings or workshops, etc.

Applications are due on May 30 for groups beginning in Fall 2024.

Welcome to our Weekly Study Tip post! This week is about what to do when facing a setback, whether academic or otherwise. This is really common at this point in the semester! Read on for some tips.

You can check out our weekly video on this topic here. We hope you find it helpful!

1. Acknowledge and Assess
Acknowledge the setback. It can be hard, but naming it is the first step to getting around it. Next, assess the ways in which you need to regroup. Make a list of people who might be able to help you -- asking for help when you need it is a very important life skill!

2. Set a Goal
Think about what success looks like. Be specific! Set a goal that encapusulates this success about your particular setback. Then, come up with a way to track your progress - use an app or pencil and paper to make sure you're doing something to help yourself reach this goal every day.

3. Make Time
Schedule time in your calendar to address the problem. Here are some examples:

If your setback is academic:
  • Visit office hours to talk about solutions with your professor
  • Attend SI PASS or sign up for tutoring -- hold yourself accountable
  • Start a habit where you do some extra work each to catch up in the class
If your setback has to do with mental health:
  • Check out the counseling center website
  • Make an appointment by calling or heading to the second floor of Retriever Integrated Health

Federal Careers for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Students (see invitation attached).

The federal career event will be at University of Maryland College Park on Friday, April 19th, from 12:00 PM to 2:15 PM. After welcoming remarks, we will have a panel of federal employees describing their path to federal service from 12:20pm to 12:50pm, followed by federal agency tables providing resources for college students from 1:15pm to 2:15pm, and an interactive activity to elicit feedback from AANHPI college students about their experience.

 

We are planning to have a closed-door faculty listening session from 1:30pm to 2:15pm concurrent with the student tabling. We very much would like your faculty to participate in this opportunity to voice their perspectives directly with the White House Initiative for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. We can follow-up with further details via email.

Dance & Bmore Teaching Artists facilitate creative classes, leading music, movement, and theater games. A minimum of two teachers per team collaborate to plan and lead engaging age-appropriate activities in music, movement, and theater. Training: Dance & Bmore provides a comprehensive training program for Teaching Artists. All Teaching Artists are required to attend teacher training workshops, in-class training, and professional development to bolster their skills and confidence as Team Teachers.

One last email for today (sorry)! Just wanted to put this week's climate change teach-ins on your radar! Professors from various departments are opening up their classrooms to students interested in climate change! The in-person talks have limited seating, but some are also available via WebEx!

Description:

The GES Department invites all students to join us for next week’s climate teach-ins! Several professors in our department will be holding specialized talks about climate change. From local climate change adaptations to critiques of global policies, we’ll be covering a broad range of topics. Some events will be streamed on Webex, while others are limited to in-person attendance (first come first serve!). These teach-ins will be the first of many April GES events on environmentalism, so stay tuned!

Fall 2024 registration is almost here! 

You must have an advising appointment and your advising hold cleared before you can register for courses. If you have not scheduled or had an advising appointment with your academic advisor yet, do so before your assigned registration time. If you do not know who your academic advisor is, you can find your assigned advisor on your myUMBC profile page. 

Registration times for undergraduate students begin as early as April 2nd for students who have earned 120 credits or more and will continue in descending earned credit order through to April 19th when all continuing students are eligible. You can verify your specific date/time for registration on your myUMBC account. 

Check for any other holds on your account that may prevent you from registering for courses.
