Evelyn Barker Memorial Lecture
The Proper Dignity of Human Being: Later Heidegger and the Philosophical Tradition
Sean D. Kelly, Harvard University
In
1947, Martin Heidegger wrote what is now known as his “Letter on
Humanism,” which is rich and revealing. At the center of the Letter
stands a singular, pointed claim: that all previous “humanisms,” have
failed to recognize the “proper dignity of human being.” Drawn from a
book in progress, this talk will explore questions of our proper
dignity, and the threat to it posed by the technological age.
Biography:
Sean Kelly earned an Sc.B. in Mathematics and Computer Science and an
M.S. in Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences from Brown University in 1989.
After several years as a graduate student in Logic and Methodology of
Science, he finally received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University
of California at Berkeley in 1998. He taught in Philosophy and the
Humanities at Stanford and in Philosophy and Neuroscience at Princeton
before joining the Harvard Faculty in 2006. His work focuses on various
aspects of the philosophical, phenomenological, and cognitive
neuroscientific nature of human experience. Kelly is the co-author, with
Hubert Dreyfus, of
The New York Times bestselling book
All Things Shining: Reading the Western Classics to Find Meaning in a Secular Age (2011), and he is currently working on a book for Harvard University Press entitled, “The Proper Dignity of Human Being.”
This lecture is organized by the Department of Philosophy.

The All Healers Mental Health Alliance, “Mental Health Issues in Emergency Management”
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Annelle Primm is a community psychiatrist based in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Primm is a graduate of Harvard University for her bachelor’s degree, Howard University College of Medicine for her medical degree, the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine psychiatry residency program, and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health for her master’s degree in public health. Dr. Primm is co-founder, chair, and convener of All Healers Mental Health Alliance (AHMHA), a national network of mental health professionals, health advocates, first responders and faith community leaders that facilitates culturally grounded responses to the mental health needs of Black and other historically marginalized communities affected by natural and human-caused disasters. AHMHA, which began its work in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina, has an MOU with FEMA, and has coordinated efforts in support of survivors of numerous crises over the past 18 years, most recently, the Buffalo massacre and Hurricane Ian in 2022, and the Mississippi tornadoes and Maui fires of 2023. Dr. Primm is widely published and has received numerous awards and honors for her work in promoting public mental health.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Wilson is an infectious disease physician who is also a professor and graduate program director of the EDHS department at UMBC. Prior to coming to UMBC, she served as a medical epidemiologist at the Maryland Department of Health, as chief for the Center for Surveillance, Infection Prevention and Outbreak Response for ten years. There she oversaw Maryland’s infectious disease outbreak responses and infection control guidance in all types of settings.
She has also served on the State’s Physician on Call Team, where she was one of a small group of doctors responsible for assessing potential biological, chemical, and nuclear threats. And she currently is the co-principal investigator of the Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) branch of Maryland’s Emerging Infections Program (EIP). Through EIP, she conducts surveillance epidemiology and antibiotic resistance research focusing on healthcare-associated infections (including COVID-19) in hospitals and nursing homes. At UMBC, her research focuses on visualizing health outcomes across the continuum of healthcare.

Join the Student Service Members, Veterans and Families group (SSM/VF) in the Commons, Room 329 at 12:00pm in discussing the unique challenges that arise as a student service member, veteran, and/or family member/dependents. Ask questions, give thoughts, opinions, praises and criticisms.
There will be lunch provided to facilitate open communication amongst peers and is available to all undergraduate students regardless of membership or military-affiliated status.
This will be an open discussion where everyone's opinions will be heard and

AI, Privacy, & Ethics Symposium: Tim Finin 12-1pm 4/1 WebEx
After 75 Years of AI, Can Machines Think?
Mathematician Alan Turing proposed a simple test to answer the question 'Can machines think?' nearly 75 years ago. Today, the surprising abilities of generative AI systems like ChatGPT make many wonder if we can finally respond positively. Professor Finin will briefly cover AI's history leading up to the recent development of systems using neural networks and large language models like ChatGPT and what to expect in the next few years. He'll touch on what current systems can and cannot do, the ways they can fail (e.g., hallucinations), the larger risks they may enable (e.g., spreading disinformation), and the societal changes they might induce (e.g., changing copyright and education practices). Dr. Finin will finish by outlining the prospects for the good things they will enable and how AI researchers hope to achieve them.
