Congratulations, Vandana!
Vandana Janeja (Information Systems) was selected as a recipient of the 2024 University System of Maryland Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Scholarship or Research, the highest honor that the Board of Regents bestows to recognize exemplary faculty achievement. Congratulations, Vandana!
Dr. Janeja is a world-renowned expert in data science and artificial intelligence (AI). As a multidisciplinary researcher, her research spans data science, information technology, geoscience, linguistics, and education. After serving as the department chair of Information Systems from 2019 to 2023, Dr. Janeja is currently leading the College of Engineering and Information Technology as the Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development.
In the last three years, Dr. Janeja was exceptionally productive with one scholarly book on data analytics for cybersecurity, many research articles in prestigious refereed journals, and more than 16.5 million research funding from NSF. Her extramurally funded research projects address a wide range of national priorities such as data science education, research capacity building for earth and environmental sciences, and climate change. She uses novel data and AI-driven methods to advance research and education in these areas.
Dr. Janeja’s research is incredibly impactful through her multidisciplinary collaboration. One exemplary project is the NSF HDR Institute for Harnessing the data and model revolution in the polar regions (iHARP), which is funded by one of the most prestigious NSF awards. As the director of iHARP, Dr. Janeja leads a team of more than 80 faculty, scientists, postdoctoral researchers, and students from 9 institutions, industry, and government agencies to address the most pressing challenges in the Polar region. What sets Dr. Jenaja apart from her peers is her ability to bridge information technology and social sciences to make big societal impacts. In NSF-funded deepfake discernment project, Dr. Jenaja collaborates with linguists to advance the detection of audio deepfakes. Her work exemplifies the need to address the issues of ethics and responsibility in data science and AI. It will greatly improve the effectiveness of deepfake discernment to enhance cybersecurity, prevent financial fraud, and inform legal practice.

TRAXXX: Black Queer Nightlife in High Fidelity, featuring madison moore, Kristy la rAt and lighting by Artemis, is an invitation for you to come and catch the beat. Black queer dance floors have always served something else — a vibrant and vibrating antidote to the here and now. The most important clubs in Black queer nightlife history, from The Warehouse (Chicago) to Paradise Garage (New York) were known for serving ovah beats, guiding clubbers eager to ride waveforms to other dimensions. What do these frequencies of Black queerness make possible? The performance will include a conversation with artist and DJ Kristy la rAt and lighting by Artemis.
madison moore is an artist-scholar, DJ, and Assistant Professor of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University. madison (any pronouns) holds a PhD in American Studies from Yale and has previously held positions in the Roski School of Art and Design at the University of Southern California, Virginia Commonwealth University, The New School, the University of Richmond and King’s College London, and has also been a visiting guest artist in the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale. He is broadly invested in the aesthetic, sonic and spatial strategies queer and trans people of color use to both survive and thrive in the five alarm fire of everyday life. His first book Fabulous: The Rise of the Beautiful Eccentric (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2018), offers a cultural analysis of fabulousness as a practice of resistance. They are currently working on a second book project, HOW TO GET YOUR (NIGHT) LIFE (under contract, Yale University Press), focused on Black queer nightlife as a method of living.
This event is open to all UMBC community members including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Light refreshments will be provided at 7:15 p.m. in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building Atrium for attendees who RSVP on myUMBC.

Volunteer for the Career Center's Clothing Closet Event
Thank You for Professional Clothing Drive Support!
The Career Center Team extends our deepest gratitude for your overwhelming support and contribution to our Professional Clothing Closet Drive. In total, we collected approximately 1600 clothing items, and what's truly remarkable is that nearly 1000 of those items came directly from our University community!
On April 2nd and April 3rd, our students will have access to one complete professional outfit, largely thanks to our UMBC Community's unwavering support.
We invite you to show your continued support for this worthy cause by helping us set up our Clothing Closet or supporting us during the event. We need volunteers from April 1st through April 4th to assist with setting up the closet, helping students select items and check out, and cleaning up the closet. Volunteer slots are just one hour!
Once again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your incredible contributions. Together, we are making a real difference in the lives of our students.

What is Meet and Confer (M&C)?
Meet and Confer (M&C) is a policy within the University System of Maryland (USM) that allows Graduate Assistants to participate in formal discussions with the administration regarding employment-related matters, including compensation and benefits. To learn more about M&C, please visit the

M&C Meetings- Spring '24
This year, we have adopted a new approach by organizing separate M&C meetings for each college at UMBC. This strategy is designed to address specific issues facing Graduate Assistants within individual colleges and departments in a more focused manner. Additionally, we have extended invitations to department chairs to ensure that department-level administration actively participates in resolving GA-related concerns, in collaboration with graduate school administration.
The
CAHSS M&C Meeting is scheduled for April 15th, and we strongly encourage all
GAs from CAHSS Departments to complete
the survey. Your input will allow you to voice your concerns and issues to the Graduate Assistant Advisory Committee, who will present them at the M&C meetings for discussion and resolution.

Congratulations, Liang!
Liang Zhu (Mechanical Engineering) was selected as a recipient of the 2024 University System of Maryland Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring, the highest honor that the Board of Regents bestows to recognize exemplary faculty achievement. Congratulations, Liang!
As an internationally recognized expert in biotransport, Dr. Zhu has successfully established and sustained an extramurally funded research program in heat and mass transfer in biomedical systems. In 2015, Dr. Zhu was elected as a fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a rare honor reserved only for the most influential mechanical engineers. As a mentor with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, Dr. Zhu has been a defining factor in the success of students and junior faculty at UMBC.
Retention in engineering has been a nationwide challenge in higher education, especially for public institutions. To enhance retention and graduation for undergraduate mechanical engineering students at UMBC, Dr. Zhu single-handedly established the ME S-STEM Scholars Program in 2010. The program uses evidence-based mentoring practices to enhance students’ research skills, self-efficacy, sense of belonging, and applied experience. In the past 13 years, the program has provided intensive mentoring and scholarships to 135 students from diverse backgrounds. The success of this program is unparalleled by every measure:
- 86% of the scholars were retained in mechanical engineering, which is 46% higher than students not in the scholarship program at UMBC,
- 35% of the scholars moved on to pursue graduate STEM degrees, which is 25% higher than students not in the scholarship program at UMBC,
- 65% of the scholars were employed in the industry, including top-notch employers like Applied Physics Laboratory and Northrop Grumman, and
- 100% of the scholars earned degrees in 4 or 4.5 years, which is significantly higher than the ASEE national benchmarks of 40% completion within four years and 65% within six years.
Dr. Zhu is also an excellent mentor to graduate students and junior faculty at UMBC. Many of her graduate students have become leaders in industry and academia to conduct innovative work of societal significance. She has devoted a tremendous amount of her efforts to mentoring junior faculty within and outside of her home department. In addition to one-on-one mentoring, she leads campus-wide efforts in recruiting and advancing women and minority faculty. These efforts having been transforming the inclusive culture at UMBC and beyond.

Congratulations, Vandana!
Vandana Janeja (Information Systems) was selected as a recipient of the 2024 University System of Maryland Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Scholarship or Research, the highest honor that the Board of Regents bestows to recognize exemplary faculty achievement. Congratulations, Vandana!
Dr. Janeja is a world-renowned expert in data science and artificial intelligence (AI). As a multidisciplinary researcher, her research spans data science, information technology, geoscience, linguistics, and education. After serving as the department chair of Information Systems from 2019 to 2023, Dr. Janeja is currently leading the College of Engineering and Information Technology as the Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development.
In the last three years, Dr. Janeja was exceptionally productive with one scholarly book on data analytics for cybersecurity, many research articles in prestigious refereed journals, and more than 16.5 million research funding from NSF. Her extramurally funded research projects address a wide range of national priorities such as data science education, research capacity building for earth and environmental sciences, and climate change. She uses novel data and AI-driven methods to advance research and education in these areas.
Dr. Janeja’s research is incredibly impactful through her multidisciplinary collaboration. One exemplary project is the NSF HDR Institute for Harnessing the data and model revolution in the polar regions (iHARP), which is funded by one of the most prestigious NSF awards. As the director of iHARP, Dr. Janeja leads a team of more than 80 faculty, scientists, postdoctoral researchers, and students from 9 institutions, industry, and government agencies to address the most pressing challenges in the Polar region. What sets Dr. Jenaja apart from her peers is her ability to bridge information technology and social sciences to make big societal impacts. In NSF-funded deepfake discernment project, Dr. Jenaja collaborates with linguists to advance the detection of audio deepfakes. Her work exemplifies the need to address the issues of ethics and responsibility in data science and AI. It will greatly improve the effectiveness of deepfake discernment to enhance cybersecurity, prevent financial fraud, and inform legal practice.
