Imposter syndrome can have several negative effects on individuals, particularly those in stages of their lives with lots of stress, like graduate students. A person who suffers from this syndrome feels as though they don’t deserve the success they have achieved, despite all evidence pointing to the contrary. They feel like a fraud and think that they are never really good enough.

While impostor syndrome is not an official diagnosis, it is a real psychological phenomenon, which can cause a great deal of stress. Negative effects of this syndrome on graduate students include:
  •  Stress and anxiety
  •  Low self-esteem
  • Missing opportunities (for example, because they might feel they are not good enough to apply for a job for which they are, in fact, qualified)
  • Burnout (as they always work too hard, so they can prove themselves)
  • In extreme cases, depression
During this session, participants will learn about imposter syndrome, impacts and brainstorm on best practices to overcome these feelings.

Join Melody Wright, of the Talent Learning & OD department, as we:
  1. Identify what imposter syndrome is.
  2.  Identify the causes of imposter syndrome and its effects on individuals.
  3. Employ methods to reduce or eliminate imposter syndrome.

Hey y'all, we have an exciting announcement: We're hosting a semester long film festival!

For this festival, There is no theme! Create anything your heart desires. You can even submit class projects, or existing short films of yours!

The deadline is May 5th at 11:59 PM EST. At the end of the semester, we'll screen the short films at a club meeting!


A couple of things to note:

-We’ll accept films of any length, but keep in mind your limitations! A 30 second masterpiece is better than a 50 minute slog.
-You can submit as many films as you like, but we recommend you just focus on one!
-While we want to encourage creativity as much as possible, keep in mind that we want to show these films to an audience of UMBC students. 

Don’t have any ideas, but want to contribute anyway? Make a post in the #cast-and-crew-call channel in our Discord!
If you know any actors, musicians, filmmakers, or artists in general who are interested in contributing to student films, give them our discord link and tell them to make a post about it in the channel!
You can also use this channel to recruit cast and crew members!

Summer I/6 week: May 28 - July 5, 2024
Meetings: Thursdays in person, 9:00am - 12:10pm (ILSB 301). Students will self-schedule their 3 hour/week field component with a Baltimore non-profit organization.

In this course, students will work in an organization or non-profit that serves the residents of Baltimore, while getting a greater understanding of their service by examining the connections between their experiences and assets and the challenges of the larger community. Topics to include the concept of community, forms of engagement, connections between policy and service, and the role of organizations in Baltimore.

Also offered as SOCY 396, so you can take it with a non-Honors friend as well!

Chartwells (UMBC dining contractor) truly values your opinion and have developed a process, “On-site Insights”, to gain your feedback regarding their dining services and to better understand your dining needs.

Chartwells would greatly appreciate your participation in their upcoming focus group session for faculty and staff, Thursday, April 4, 2024 12Noon - 12:45pm, so that they may hear your candid feedback regarding your dining experiences.  Your feedback is extremely important and will be used to help Chartwells reinvent your dining experience here on campus.

Before you sign up for a focus group session, there are a few important items to note:
•     It’s confidential. Chartwells does not release individual data to anyone; your answers are entirely anonymous.
•     It’s a 45-minute session. Chartwells promises that the session will end within 45 minutes.

In the final nine months of UMBC's Ultra migration, the overall faculty adoption rate continues to grow. For the spring 2024 term, Original course usage decreased by 33% between fall 23 and spring 24. Overall, Ultra adoption increased to 69.49% this semester, representing 1091 courses out of 1567 available in UMBC's Blackboard site. 

In addition, more departments and programs have opted in to using Ultra as the default course experience for students, allowing faculty to quickly prepare their courses. Two weeks before the SP2024 semester started, Ultra course availability to students outpaced Original courses by a margin of 63% to 2%.

Ultra continues to bring more than 200 enhancements to the gradebook, content creation, and assessments. Unique to Ultra are progress tracking reports and the AI Course Design Assistant tools, designed to facilitate course development and improve student engagement with course materials. These updates offer a more intuitive and feature-rich platform for both faculty and students.

Preparing For Ultra Course Migration

While it is possible to convert courses from Original to Ultra, DoIT's Instructional Technology team recommends starting fresh.
