Faculty Annual Report due Friday, May 17 New features in Faculty Success to collect faculty activity
Dear Colleagues,

The Faculty Annual Report (FAR) is due Friday, May 17, 2024—as a faculty member you are required to complete the FAR.

Digital Measures is now called Faculty Success by Watermark. This change is in name only; it does not affect the functionality, workflow, or URLs of the system.

The FAR informs multiple processes, including merit review processes (where applicable), and an annual and comprehensive review of tenured faculty. Some of the data you enter is also aggregated to satisfy reporting to the University System of Maryland.

You need to certify your annual submission for it to be considered complete. You do this by going to the “Certify Your Annual Submission—Mandatory” section of Faculty Success, located at the bottom of the main page. Read the statement and check the box. This signals you have completed your FAR.

You have the option to save a copy as a PDF and sign by using the “Fill & Sign” function, or you may print and then sign before sending a copy to your chair. Faculty and chairs sign off on all final FAR submissions. You should keep a copy for your records and future use; only you and your department have a copy. We encourage you to regularly update your information in Faculty Success throughout the year!

Complete Your Faculty Annual Report

Directions: Log in to myUMBC and click Guide, and then choose Faculty Success by Watermark under Personal Links. Please use the “?” link located on the top right of the tool bar on the Faculty Success main page for information about navigating Faculty Success. More information is available for UMBC-specific questions and information regarding how to complete the FAR.

Due Dates
May 17: FAR is due. Faculty members submit a signed copy to their chairs.
June 7: IRADS will provide the department chairs feedback. Any corrections to individual FARs must be completed via Faculty Success.
June 21: Last day for faculty to resubmit a revised signed copy to their chair.
June 28: Chairs sign and submit all department copies to their appropriate dean.

About the Faculty Annual Report
All faculty members are required to complete an annual report. Specifically, all tenured or tenure-track faculty should submit a report, including those serving in an administrative or research unit and those who are on sabbatical, on leave without pay, or on fellowship leave. All full-time, non-instructional faculty—including research faculty, research associates or post-docs, visiting faculty, instructors, and lecturers—should also submit a report.

New Features in Faculty Success
  • Directions are at the top of each page to guide you in what to enter on those individual pages.
  • The Intellectual Contributions and Creative Publications pages have been combined into the Intellectual and Creative Publications page in order to improve data collection and reduce redundant entries.
  • The Student Publications and Student Grants and Awards pages have been removed because that information is collected in the Intellectual and Creative Publications and the Contracts, Fellowships, Grants and Sponsored Research pages, respectively.

About the Faculty Expert Search Tool
The UMBC website features a tool for users to find UMBC faculty experts. This resource can help you to promote your research and find potential new collaborators. It can also help prospective graduate students, journalists, community partners, and UMBC staff identify faculty with expertise in particular subject areas.

The Faculty Expert tool draws on information from Faculty Success from the Biography, Teaching Interest(s), and Research Interest(s) sections on the Personal and Contract Information page. You decide what to share. Please see UMBC’s Faculty Expert Search tool step-by-step guide for details on how to add a brief bio statement, teaching interests, research interests, photo, and more. Many department websites draw on this same database for their faculty listings, so this can also help keep your information updated there.

Tonight's Meeting will be IN-PERSON ONLY

Our weekly meetings continue tonight, from 7:10 PM to 9:00 PM in ITE 231. Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide a virtual component tonight.

Due to tonight's topic, it is critcal that slides are not disseminated in any form publicly. Since Webex poses a high risk of third parties recording/sharing the slides, it was decided the meeting would be in-person only. 

This week, we will have a Computer Network Operator guest speaker. They will be presenting on Metasploit, a powerful open-source framework widely used for vulnerability research, exploit development, and security testing. This is great opportunity to learn from a professional in the field about a prevalent penetration tool and to gain a deeper understanding of security vulnerabilities. We look forward to seeing everyone tonight!

Dear UMBC Community, 
 
We write today to once again address the need for respect and civility among our community. This comes as we are hearing reports and seeing for ourselves incidents of disrespectful behavior and antisemitic messages posted across campus and on social media. These include conduct during a recent Student Government Association (SGA) meeting and recent student demonstrations on campus and antisemitic posters displayed in violation of our university posting policy. 
 
We will hold accountable those who violate university policy, and we encourage the continued reporting of any incidents of harassment or bias through the Office of Equity and Civil Rights’ online reporting form, by emailing ecr@umbc.edu, or by calling 410-455-1717. We also want to remind the entire community that the freedom for individuals to express themselves is not absolute: All members of the community—students, faculty, and staff—are expected to adhere to university policies and procedures, including UMBC’s policy on discrimination and equal opportunity. We will not tolerate speech or behavior that creates a hostile environment for others or that denies or limits individuals’ access to our educational programs or activities on the basis of race, religion, national origin, or other protected categories. 
 
The behavior of some individuals at last week’s SGA meeting was particularly disappointing. The meeting was held to address a resolution that asked the university to boycott and divest from “entities complicit in the violation of Palestinian human rights” and to actively protect “Palestinian students and their allies as they advocate for justice for the Palestinian people.” Although SGA leadership asked audience members to respect our community standards and provided specific expectations for the meeting, some in the audience chose to engage in behaviors that were unacceptable—disrespectful to those testifying, as well as to the SGA. For the SGA to truly represent the undergraduate student body and advocate for it within our system of shared governance, its processes must allow for a multitude of voices and viewpoints to be heard and considered—not silenced by peers. 
 
Campus Life staff is actively and regularly engaged with SGA and will continue to support its members as they remain dedicated to their roles in shared governance. Additionally, we continue to work with our religious organizations and Religious Council to provide care and support and co-create a vision for the future that builds bridges across communities of differing beliefs and identities. With regard to campus protests and demonstrations, we have improved and clarified our safety protocols to ensure the well-being of all community members. And our student conduct and community standards team stands ready to address violations of the student code of conduct, including behaviors that disrupt the functioning of the university and that target specific individuals or threaten the physical safety of community members. 
 
To foster greater understanding of the First Amendment-protected freedom of speech, we are providing educational sessions for students, faculty, and staff. Sessions for student leaders begin today, Monday, March 11, and we will offer additional sessions throughout the semester. Efforts are also underway to implement targeted conversations and engagement to offer care and support and address specific faculty and staff needs.

Join us for a virtual seminar by Dr. Yixin ‘Berry’ Wen, Department of Geography, University of Florida. Her talk is titled "Creating synergy between satellite and radar precipitation measurements aided by symbolic deep learning."

Abstract: 
"Ground-based polarimetric radars - WSR-88D network in the US - underpin nationwide precipitation observations and estimates with advanced Doppler capability. Alternatively, spaceborne radar - GPM DPR (Global Precipitation Measures Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar) - has an unprohibited downward view and higher vertical resolution, relative to ground-based radars. The synergy between space-borne and ground-based radars combined with AI/ML creates promising opportunities for observing and probing three-dimensional clouds and precipitation structures. However, it is a prerequisite to fully understand and quantify the similarities and differences between the WSR-88D and GPM DPR.

The first half of the talk will focus on the nationwide comparisons at 140 WSR-88D radar sites from 2014 to 2020. Systematic differences are found across the ground radar sites with an average of ~ 2 dB. The recently updated DPR version 7 product improves rain detection and attenuation corrections, effectively reducing the overall average WSR-88D and DPR reflectivity differences to 1.0 dB.

The second half of the talk will focus on polarimetric radar quantitative estimation (QPE) using AI/ML methods. Conventional parametric radar QPE algorithms such as the radar reflectivity and rain rate relations cannot fully represent clouds and precipitation dynamics. Recent years have seen the application of Deep Learning methods to improve QPE products. However, the 'black box' nature of deep learning poses challenges in understanding the underlying physical meaning. In contrast, symbolic learning, a branch of artificial intelligence, utilizes symbols to represent knowledge in a clear and interpretable manner. The presentation will showcase our preliminary findings from our exploration of neural network and and symbolic learning approaches for polarimetric radar QPE."

Biography:
Dr. Berry Wen is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Geography at the University of Florida. Berry received her PhD degree from the School of Meteorology, University of Oklahoma.  She further honed her skills during postdoctoral research at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory before returning to Oklahoma as a research scientist at CIWRO. In this role, she was affiliated with Radar Division in National Severe Storms Laboratory.

Berry is a member of the User Working Group with NASA/Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) as an expert in AI and data fusion. Additionally, she serves as an editor of the AGU’s new journal, JGR: Machine Learning and Computation.

Berry's research areas of focus include radar and satellite remote sensing, machine learning, and deep learning. Additionally, she engages in long-term climate data analysis, studying extreme events and water-related natural hazards. Beyond her scientific pursuits, Dr. Wen is committed to working with Indigenous Peoples and Native Nations for Environmental Justice and Climate Justice.
