Paradise Route: Road Closure and Detours BGE Gas Line Replacement ~ Beginning - March 11, 2024.

Dear Paradise Route Riders,


We hope you're doing well. We wanted to let you know about an upcoming road closure on Maiden Choice Lane because of the replacement of the BGE gas line. The closure will be effective starting Monday, March 11, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM until the gas lines are replaced. Due to the detour, riders can expect a 5-10 minute delay.


The following bus stops will be affected during this period:

Dr. Timothy Chizmar serves as the State EMS Medical Director at the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems. He is a board-certified physician in the specialties of Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services. Dr. Chizmar graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center and R
Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. Dr. Chizmar has maintained an active clinical practice in emergency medicine and EMS for over a decade in the Baltimore area.

Here in The Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being, we are preparing for a busy Spring Holiday Season. Within the next 4-6 weeks, students and student organizations on our campus will be celebrating a large variety of religious holidays, including (but not limited to) Passover, Ramadan Easter, and Holi.  As we approach this time of feasting, fasting, and holidays with deep significance for many in our community, this (rather long) email shares the ways that The Gathering Space is working to help host, work with, and celebrate students as they live into their spiritual and religious identities.

1) Gathering Space Hours will be adjusted during this Spring Holiday Season to accommodate student needs. During these increased hours, students will have access to CWB 103 (The Gathering Space), CWB 101, CWB 109, and the Lounge in the CWB. Here are the hours from Sunday, March 26th through Saturday, April 22. During this time, please do your best to share space, help clean after celebrations, and engage each other with generous questions and listening.

Ramadan begins today, Sunday, March 10th and will end Thursday, April 11th. To meet the needs of students breaking their fast and evening taraweeh prayers, CWB 103 (The Gathering Space) will be open during the times below. Campus Dining Services has made increased halal and suhoor food options available. Please see the attached flyer for more information. Food will also be available for suhoor in the kitchenette in The Gathering Space: Please reserve this food for community members wishing to eat before fasting.

         Passover takes place from sundown on Saturday, April 20th to sundown on Tuesday, April 30th. If you are interested in participating with one of our Jewish Religious and Belief organizations on campus, please follow in the links below. Additionally, Campus Dining Services has made Kosher for Passover Food available (a flyer will soon be posted and shared with this information). Multimodal Machine Learning and Analytics for Characterizing Parent-Child Interactions: Applications in Education and Social Works

Human-human interactions are fascinating and complex phenomena. However, it is notoriously difficult to study, given the dynamic and multimodal (e.g., audio, verbal, and visual) nature of the interactions. Modern sensors and the computational capability offered by AI/machine learning allow us to process and analyze fine-grained multimodal interaction data at a large scale. In this talk, I will share two studies that characterize and model parent-child interactions using audio/video data recordings, one in math education and another in early childhood parenting intervention contexts. I will discuss the various analytical methods used to derive insights and the implications for designing AI-supported coaching systems for realizing societal impacts at a large scale. I will also examine the challenges of working with multimodal interaction data.

Lujie Karen Chen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Systems at UMBC, where she leads the Laboratory for Informatics for Human Flourishing. She has almost 20 years of academic and real-world experience in applied machine learning, statistics, data mining, analytics, and visualization. Before joining UMBC, she spent about 15 years at the Auton Lab at Carnegie Mellon University, where she received her Ph.D. in Information Systems and was a fellow in the Program of Interdisciplinary Educational Research.

Meet and Greet Event: We had a very successful Meet and Greet event last week. The aim was to welcome incoming African Graduate Students, create a discussion on the advantages of coming together as a minority and brainstormed innovative ways to address some of the challenges faced by us as a community. Members shared personal experiences and insights, fostering a stimulating exchange of ideas etc. We had food and drink, and it was beautiful.

The Commercialization & ENTR REsearch (CENTRE) Funding Initiative of the UMBC Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship provides funds for research that leads to potential commercialization of a product or service. 

All UMBC faculty members (full time or adjunct) who are conducting research in either technical fields (technical entrepreneurship), or social/humanities fields (social entrepreneurship) are encouraged to apply for funding. Faculty members who receive funds through this initiative are encouraged to file for a patent and are expected to publish their research results and to be involved in commercializing the research outcomes. CENTRE funding prepares faculty for TEDCO MII funding (State of Maryland), Catalyst Funds, or possible awards from NEA, NSF, NIH, etc. Interdisciplinary collaborations (e.g. from humanities and technology) with faculty from different UMBC departments are strongly encouraged.
