Retriever Essentials in Baltimore Sun Education supplement
Retriever Essentials was featured in the Feb. 2024 Baltimore Sun Education supplement article (page 2), "Addressing physical and mental health challenges: From food pantries to counseling, colleges step up." Program Coordinator Ariel Barbosa shared information about the resources Retriever Essentials provides: the Essential Space, the free grocery store, free farmer's market, meal recovery program, campus garden, and meal card Save-a-Swipe program.
Barbosa noted, "When we opened The Essential Space, it allowed us to expand the number of students and staff that we could reach. We started recognizing that so many students were struggling ... some were homeless, and some were pregnant and could not afford food or other essentials."

Education supplement article on BreakingGround initiative
David Hoffman, J.D., Ph.D. '13, director of the Center for Democracy and Civic Life, was interviewed for the Feb. 2024 Baltimore Sun Education supplement article, "Shaping tomorrow's leaders: Experiential learning fosters skills, empathy, and professionalism."
BreakingGround, a grant program that supports civic innovations at UMBC, launched in fall 2012. In the article, Dr. Hoffman shares more about how the program helped amplify the innovative work already happening in UMBC classrooms. He explains, "'People were engaging students in creative problem-solving and exposing them to real-world issues, but it wasn't always recognized as civic engagement. BreakingGround was born out of a desire to make these efforts more visible, connect educators, and support impactful experiences.'"
Jafri described examples of how BreakingGround is enriching his classroom experiences. "'Last semester, we worked with a state storyteller through the BreakingGround fund, creating music around classic stories from African American culture. It helped us explore themes of resilience, cultural diversity, and promote these values within our community....We're proving that education isn't just about acquiring knowledge but about making a meaningful impact on the world around us.'"

But sleep is actually one of the most important ways to promote healthy brain function- including concentration and memory- the things you need to succeed in college!
Join Retriever Integrated Health to talk about some ways to improve sleep and learn how RIH's counseling and medical services can further support your journey to a better night's sleep.

College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS) Graduate Research Festival (GradFest) is an informal(ish) conference style event to see all the cool research going on in the CNMS!
This event will be held on Friday, April 12, from 2 to 5 p.m. (University Center, Ballroom area, 3rd floor). It
will be an exciting event for all graduate students and postdocs to
come together to celebrate interdisciplinary research and make new
connections.
To participate in this event, all you need to do is fill out one of the registration forms below:

research poster. You also have the opportunity to apply to give a
5-minute Lightning Round talk about your research project.

The PreMedical Society will be hosting Alexa Viola, the Assistant Director of Admissions for Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine tomorrow March 8th, from 12 PM - 1 PM. Join us to learn more about this path and details about the program admission process. This session will be online and will be held on WebEx.
Please attend the session to ask questions about the pre-medical process and to hear about PCOM's program! It is a great opportunity to get a deeper look into the admissions process, and connect with a representative from the school, so your attendance will be very much appreciated. You have the opportunity to meet with one of the members of the admissions committee if you choose to apply to PCOM, so having them be familiar with you prior to applying is a big plus.

Call for Proposals for
Graduate Student Research Fellowships The Dresher Center for the Humanities invites applications for two Graduate Student Research Fellowships for the 2024-25 academic year. One fellowship will be awarded for Fall 2024 and one for Spring 2025. Funding is intended to support and promote promising humanities research by graduate students at UMBC.
The fellowships are open to all UMBC doctoral and master's level students working on humanities-related research projects that will culminate in a dissertation or master's thesis. Proposals will be reviewed by the Dresher Center Advisory Board.

VITAL Program
The wait is finally over, VITAL is here!
The Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership (VITAL) program is a partnership between the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and UMBC to help veterans achieve their academic goals. The VITAL program is comprised of VA mental health professionals who can help both student veterans and their universities/colleges by providing and/or assisting with services, resources, and support.
VITAL can assist with:
Enrollment in VA healthcare.
VA and non-VA resources.
Academic accommodations.
Advocacy for student veterans.
Clinical services for veteran students dealing with various daily stressors, including attention issues, difficulty concentrating, stress, sleep problems, memory issues, anger/irritability, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and PTSD.
Additionally, VITAL can assist with:
Dr. Daniel Koster is our on-campus psychologist for the VITAL program and will be on campus every Monday, beginning March 4, to meet with students, faculty, and staff. To schedule a meeting with Dr. Koster, please email him at Daniel.Koster2@va.gov.

Apply today to receive a stipend for your unpaid opportunity
Have you been offered an exciting internship opportunity that does not include a paid salary or stipend? Whether you have already accepted a position or are in the process of applying, you may be eligible to apply for a financial stipend.
The UMBC Career Center and College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences are proud to announce the continuation of the Student Internship & Service Fund, thanks to the generous support of our alumni and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.
STIPEND AMOUNTS:
-
$2,000 stipend for unpaid internships totaling 120 hours or more this summer
-
$1,000 stipend for unpaid volunteer service totaling 60 hours or more this summer
ELIGIBILITY:
-
GPA of 2.5 or higher
- You must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student studying in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences who will return to UMBC in Fall 2024.
- You must have obtained, OR plan to obtain an unpaid position with a Maryland small business or nonprofit organization for Summer 2024.
- If you have not already obtained an unpaid position for summer, you must secure a position by May 1, 2024.
