PREDOC’s 2024 Summer Course is now accepting applications.  This synchronous, remote summer course is designed to introduce rising sophomores and juniors to the breadth of quantitative social science research, and to equip them with technical skills so that they can be competitive on the pre-doc and graduate school markets.  


The course culminates in an in-person undergraduate research conference in Washington, D.C., hosted by the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.  


The course is free of charge, and all students will receive a $2,000 stipend.  All travel expenses to and from the undergraduate research conference will be covered by PREDOC.  Applications are due March 23.

Designed for mobility, Ultra supports a condensed hierarchy for content nesting on the main course content page. Student preference and support were the primary purpose for Blackboard to reduce the number of folders that can be nested from unlimited in Original to two in Ultra. Many faculty adopted the streamlined approach to redesign and organize their courses for efficient access. 

Two levels of folders, however, could be somewhat limiting for certain types of courses and organizations. Beginning in mid-March, Ultra will support an additional level of nested folders to faculty as they develop and teach their Ultra courses. The top level applies to either learning modules or folders, and within this top level, two additional levels are then supported. This change aims to provide faculty with greater flexibility in organizing course materials, especially for complex topics that require a more hierarchical content structure.

The new folder settings will be available in Ultra courses after spring break.

Preparing For Course Migration to Ultra

While it is possible to convert courses from Original to Ultra, DoIT's Instructional Technology team recommends starting fresh. This approach allows for copying content from Original or rebuilding courses from the ground up to ensure an optimal experience for both faculty and students. Starting fresh in Ultra enables you to take full advantage of the platform's new features and design capabilities.

The Career Center's Christine Routzahn, director, and Jennifer Spencer Heilman, program director for workforce initiatives, wrote guest commentary for Maryland Matters, entitled, "Supporting Md.'s technology growth, innovation, and talent retention by increasing paid technical internships." The March 4, 2024 article focused on the success of the Maryland Technology Internship Program (MTIP), administered by the UMBC Career Center and funded by the State of Maryland. 

Heilman and Routzahn wrote that MTIP "incentivizes technology-based businesses, as well as state and local agencies, to increase their intern hires by providing matching intern funds and additional support. Since its inception in 2018, MTIP has facilitated over 1,000 paid technical internships across Maryland, spanning diverse industries such as biohealth/life sciences, engineering, IT/software solutions, cybersecurity, and manufacturing. This program, in partnership with higher education institutions and numerous employers statewide, underscores the importance of bridging the gap between theoretical classroom learning and practical real-world applications."

They add that, "The Maryland Technology Internship Program represents a significant step towards nurturing Maryland's technical talent pool and supporting its economic growth. UMBC is honored to administer MTIP, showcasing Maryland's commitment to paid internships, support for small businesses, and strategic partnerships that set a promising foundation for its continued expansion and success. As stakeholders continue to invest in initiatives like MTIP, they contribute not only to the professional development of students but also to the sustainable growth of Maryland's workforce. It is critical that we continue to invest in programs like MTIP to secure a successful future for generations to come."

Data validation and accuracy were significant issues with our previous provider, and our partners at Swiftly are working diligently to ensure that the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) reflects our current schedules. Under each route schedule, you can find a temporary live link (provided by Samsara) to your bus's location. 

Our partners at the Transit App are on standby as we await the completion of the data validation. Below, you'll find a rendering of the upcoming Transit Royale feature in the Transit App. This milestone marks a significant achievement in enhancing our transit system for a more efficient and user-friendly experience.
