This year, the conference will be on April 3th from 11am to 1pm on the 2nd floor of the Policy Building. If you would like to participate, please fill out this application form with your name, paper title and a brief 4-5-sentence abstract by Wednesday March 6th.  Also, please feel free to reach out to Professor Forestiere forestie@umbc.edu or to Professor Anson at iganson@umbc.edu if you have any questions. 

We are set to hold our 14th undergraduate research conference for political science students on Wednesday, April 3th, 2024 from 11am to 1pm! All students who have written a strong research-oriented paper for any political science course or independent study are welcome to apply. Please note that it is not necessary for a student to be a member of Pi Sigma Alpha in order to participate. 

Conference presenters usually present research that they have completed as a poster that they display on an easel to their visitors. The posters are made in Microsoft's Powerpoint. It's a wonderful opportunity for you to disseminate your research and discuss your ideas to a larger audience. In addition, students often use this conference to prepare for their presentations at URCAD (Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day), which will take place one week later on April 10th. 

 Also, the UMBC Omicron Eta Pi Sigma Alpha group has received funding from the national organization of Pi Sigma Alpha to cover the costs associated with your participation in the conference, including the printing and mounting of your poster on a posterboard and lunch the day of the conference. Once we know who is participating, we will distribute information about how to make a poster in Powerpoint and if there is enough interest we will also hold a workshop. 

Please consider participating if you have a strong paper from a class or other research experience that you would like to present! It's a wonderful experience for everyone - for presenters and visitors alike.

 "Beyond Mentorship" will be led by Dr. Adam Cebulski, founder and CEO of transform.forward, a strategy consulting and coaching firm, and also includes panelist Dr. Jose Luis-Riera, vice president for student life at the University of Delaware.

Dr. Kersh is also a panelist for "Defining Womanhood" at the USM Women's Forum Women's History Month webinar on March 13. The panel will discuss characteristics that contribute to their definition of womanhood and share how these characteristics and qualities present themselves in their personal and professional lives. 

Additional panelists for "Defining Womanhood" will include Kelsey Beckett, chief of staff and director of operations in USM's Office of Academic and Student Affairs, and Shantala Thompson, associate director of University of Maryland's LGBTQ+ Equity Center. It is moderated by Dr. Allyson DeMaagd, coordinator for sexuality and gender diversity at Towson University.

Leonardo Swafford, English major and Honors Program student, has been awarded the 2024 Caroline Iannone Scholarship from the Medieval and Modern Studies Minor (MEMS). The award will fund research at Trinity College Dublin and the National Archives of Ireland, which Leonardo will use in his Honors thesis, a creative writing project including historical and contemporary fiction set in Ireland.

The English Department Reading Series will feature poet Taylor Johnson for the 2023/2024 series. This event is free and will feature books for sale with a signing and refreshments to follow.

Taylor Johnson is the author of Inheritance (Alice James Books, 2020), winner of the 2021 Norma Farber First Book Award from the Poetry Society of America. His work appears in Poetry Magazine, The Paris Review, The Baffler, Scalawag, and elsewhere. Johnson is a Cave Canem graduate fellow and a recipient of the 2017 Larry Neal Writers' Award from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and the 2021 Judith A. Markowitz Award for Emerging Writers from Lambda Literary. Taylor was the inaugural 2022 Poet-in-Residence at the Guggenheim Museum. He is the Poet Laureate of Takoma Park, Maryland.
