Reasoning about real-life events is a unifying challenge in AI and NLP that has profound utility in a variety of domains, while any fallacy in high-stake applications like law, medicine, and science could be catastrophic. Able to work with diverse text in these domains, large language models (LLMs) have proven capable of answering questions and solving problems. In this talk, I demonstrate that end-to-end LLMs still systematically fail on reasoning tasks of complex events. Moreover, their black-box nature gives rise to little interpretability and user control. To address these issues, I propose two general approaches to use LLMs in conjunction with a structured representation of events. The first is a language-based representation involving relations of sub-events that can be learned by LLMs via fine-tuning. The second is a symbolic representation involving states of entities that can be leveraged by either LLMs or deterministic solvers. On a suite of event reasoning tasks, I show that both approaches outperform end-to-end LLMs in terms of performance and trustworthiness.

Become a Summer Orientation Advisor

<Tagline>Academic & Pre-Professional Advising</Tagline>

The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Summer Orientation Advisors! Advisors meet with incoming students VIRTUALLY during the months of June-August in one-on-one sessions to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary! Upon hire, YOU will be given the opportunity to select which days you are available to advise.

We are particularly excited to bring full-time staff in for this role. As Orientation Advising occurs during regular business hours, we can't offer compensation outside of your existing pay for those hours, and you are encouraged to work with your supervisor to be released from other duties during the scheduled session hours. I would be pleased to be part of any such discussion to highlight how your participation can benefit your department!

How does this benefit you? Orientation Advising is a unique professional development opportunity. Advisors are trained in an intensive full-day virtual session, and then gain real-world experience working with students. We believe so strongly in the value added to participants that, for the first time ever, advisors this year will be eligible to receive the Orientation Advisor microcredential, which highlights the customer service, analytical, and communication skills required for the role.

We are offering informational sessions for anyone interested or who even just might be interested in finding out about this exciting opportunity to expand their skillsets, make meaningful connections, serve their departments, and get paid!

TUESDAY, March 5 at noon, in-person at Sherman Hall (B-Wing) 220
