Campus Composted Expanded

UMBC is excited to announce the expansion of compost collection on campus! You've likely already noticed a few new compost bins around our dining facilities. This is part of our effort to increase the amount of organic waste we are diverting from the landfill. UMBC has historically had a composting program in True Grit's and the Commons, but due to recently passed State legislation and renewed interest from students, we are increasing our efforts. A lot of the groundwork can be attributed to our dedicated students who have been working hard to expand compost over the past few years.

New compost collection bins were added around campus in the areas with the most food consumption, including the University Center, Administration Cafe, Albin O. Kuhn Library, and outdoor areas with picnic tables such as the Commons Terrace, RAC patio, and University Center. We are relying on the entire UMBC community to help us make our program successful! Ensuring that the correct items are composted is of the utmost importance. Contamination of compost bins with just a few other items (trash and recycling) will result in the whole container of compost going into the trash instead. It could also result in significant fees to UMBC, preventing us from doing more around campus!

To keep composting as simple and straightforward as possible, we are asking that all food scraps are composted. This includes meat and dairy products, coffee and tea grounds, vegetable scraps, leftovers, and waste food parts from meal preparation (peels, eggshells, stems, and more). The following items should NOT go into compost bins: metal, glass, and plastic. Remember, recycling has its own container, and above all, when in doubt, throw it out!! If you're unsure, the safest bet is to put it in the trash.

We appreciate the many campus stakeholders who have come together to make this initiative possible! Thank you to Facilities Management, Auxiliary Services, UMBC Dining, Chartwells, ABM, and our community members who have served as advocates for composting for many years! If you would like to get involved with volunteering to help make our compost program a success, contact our Office of Sustainability (sustainability@umbc.edu). If you would like more information about composting and zero-waste projects on campus, check out our composting webpage.

Reminder: Great Colleges to Work For Survey

<Tagline>Help us create the best workplace possible</Tagline>

Dear Colleagues,

UMBC has decided to participate in the Great Colleges to Work For program, a national survey designed to recognize institutions that have built great workplaces. Regardless of whether or not we are recognized, the data we receive is helpful as we continue the process of creating the best workplace possible.

On March 4, the survey will be distributed to a random selection of our faculty and staff. If you are included in this random sample, you will receive an invitation with details about the program and how to access the survey. This invitation will be sent to you via an email from Great Colleges.

If you receive the invitation, please take a moment to complete the survey. You will be representing not only yourself, but all your colleagues, so your feedback is invaluable! This is a chance to make your voice heard, and a high response rate helps ensure an accurate representation of our community. At the close of the program, we will receive reports that summarize the organizational competencies and relationships that most directly impact and influence our culture.

The survey is voluntary and completely confidential; our institution will not be able to trace results back to individuals. Your survey will be processed by ModernThink LLC, an independent management consulting firm focusing on workplace quality in higher education. They can be reached at 888-684-4658 or at surveys@modernthink.net.

We encourage everyone's participation and hope you will take this opportunity to share your honest feedback! Thank you, in advance, for your participation. Please visit Great Colleges for more resources or if you have any questions.

Great bedroom for rent

<Tagline>Private bedroom in 3-br apartment in Mt. Ridge, $460/month</Tagline>

Seeking a third roommate for a three-bedroom apartment in the Mount Ridge apartment complex in Catonsville.

The apartment has a fully-stocked kitchen, in-unit washer and dryer, and the complex is on the UMBC shuttle stop. The bedroom is about 110 sq. feet, with two big windows and a large closet. The bathroom is shared. The complex is 10 minutes from campus, 5 minutes from 695 and 25 minutes from downtown Baltimore.

We are two guys 36 and 34 years old. One is a vegetarian and gay, and the other is neither. One of us is a server at a restaurant in the Inner Harbor and is finishing undergrad in Computer Science (almost never home). The other one is a graduate research assistant and is finishing a PhD in Public Policy (works from home).

The rent is $460/month, which does not include utilities - about $50-$120 per person per month (the weather makes a big difference on the BGE bill). The security deposit is one month's rent.

In order to live here, there is an application process with the management company that carries a nonrefundable fee of $30. There's also a $500 charge payable to the management company to add someone to the lease, but we would split that 3 ways so it's $170 per person.

Pics are attached - including picture of the explanation of the $500 charge by the management company. Sorry, no pets.

Glad to answer questions.
