Public Video Art Projection Gallery
Art projections "demo" at the Fine Arts Building
Thursday, February 29, 2024, 6-8 pm
The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture (CADVC) inaugurates the "demo" of a new public video art projection gallery with work by artist Levester Williams, featuring his work "dreaming of a beyond: Baltimore" (2021-2024). The event will include a conversation between Williams and curator Lisa Freiman. Hot refreshments will be served. Showings of the work will continue on select evenings in late February and early March.
The work is the result of the artist's Exploratory Research Residency at CADVC, ongoing since 2023. During this time, Williams has been researching the histories and mythologies of Cockeysville (Maryland) marble, a material used in many salient objects in the local built environment, including the Washington Monument and iconic exterior steps of Baltimore rowhomes. The film results from this research as well as movement workshops and other activities that included the participation of UMBC students and other Baltimore residents. Artist Nia Hampton, a current IMDA graduate student, and her mother, artist and arts advocate Sheila Gaskins, are featured performers. The filmic work was assisted by IMDA graduate student Bao Nguyen and artist Savannah Knoop, who worked on the project as an intimacy coordinator and facilitator.
dreaming of a beyond: Baltimore is an embodied consideration of the labor histories, and mythologies, surrounding a marble building material that appears throughout Baltimore's built environment. In the movement experiments surrounding the film work, participants negotiated relationships to public space, monumental form, and connections to history. In Williams's words, the project underscores the "intertwined history of African-Americans' plight to self-determined agency and full citizenship, and a rather benign stone."
This public display of an art work-in-process is consistent with CADVC's commitment to showcasing the experimentation of artists and the visual culture of interdisciplinary research. Currently, CADVC's gallery is exhibiting Spectrum of Process, highlighting UMBC faculty approaches to art and culture through rigorous, experimental processes.

Just a reminder that the CBIC Is Around the Corner! It's time to start preparing for the annual Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition!
The CBIC is designed for students who are serious about starting a business or social impact venture. Students selected to go to the final competition will be paired with mentors to flesh out their business idea. This year, the Center will offer 2 tracks: The Technology and Innovation Track and The Social Impact Track. Winners in each track will win up to $3,000 with an opportunity to win an additional $2,000 after a 6 month progress review. Here are the important dates to remember:
- Deadline for idea submissions: MONDAY February 26 at 1pm
- Final Event: April 11 from 7 - 9pm

M&C is a University System of Maryland (USM) policy which allows Graduate Assistants (i.e. you) to engage in formal discussions with the administration regarding employment issues such as compensation and benefits. More info on M&C can be found on the

This year, we have adopted a new approach by scheduling separate M&C meetings for each college at UMBC. This will allow us to delve deeper into specific graduate assistant (GA) issues within each college and department. Additionally, we have extended our invitation to department chairs to ensure department-level administration is involved in resolving GA-related issues, alongside graduate school administration.

Who does the survey?
The
Graduate Assistant Advisory Council (GAAC) is responsible for organizing meetings with university administration as per the policies set forth by the USM. To facilitate productive discussions during the M&C meetings, GAAC has created an anonymous survey to gather information on GA-related issues from our community.
What do we need you to do?
We request that you take 5 minutes out of your day to fill out
this survey so that the GAAC can raise your concerns with the Deans of the Graduate School, Respective College Deans and Department Chairs. Your participation and input are crucial to ensuring that the concerns of GAs are effectively represented during these M&C meeting.

UMBC-led Aquaculture Research Center donates thousands of pounds of seafood to local food pantries
The Aquaculture Research Center (ARC) at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET), led by Yonathan Zohar, professor of marine biotechnology, has been focused for years on advancing sustainable methods of growing fish on land to meet the growing global demand for seafood. In addition to helping develop new, environmentally responsible ways of producing nutritious food for the long term, the ARC is helping to meet immediate needs in the local community.
Today, the center donated 1,200 pounds of Atlantic salmon to DC Central Kitchen, a food pantry in Southwest Washington, D.C., after donating 1,400 pounds in November 2023. ProFish, located in Washington, DC, processed the salmon for the donations.
The ARC’s seafood donation program launched in 2017, when the Feeding Individuals to Support Health (FISH) initiative was formed in partnership with several local businesses and non-profit organizations. The first major donation distributed thousands of pounds of European sea bass (also known as bronzino) grown in the ARC’s marine tanks to communities in need in the Baltimore area.
“The U.S. is the largest importer of seafood in the world. Currently the oceans are overfished, and IMET is working on innovative aquaculture platforms that will reduce U.S. and global dependence on wild fisheries stocks,” Zohar says. “Through these donations, we can also provide a small level of societal benefit right away and close to home.”
