The Art of Pitching

<Tagline>Here are some tips to help you craft the perfect pitch.</Tagline>

You've submitted your
event registration. You have your resumes on hand and ready. You've got your power
    outfit picked out.

It may seem like you've got everything you need for a
successful networking event but there's one more crucial piece of the puzzle:
    your pitch.

What is a pitch exactly? Usually taking about 30 seconds,
your elevator pitch (or commercial) allows you to introduce yourself and make
your personal brand known to employers. It's essentially the first impression
that you make, so having your pitch well practiced and ready is important when
    approaching employers.

Keep these tips in mind when crafting your pitch. And if you
want somewhere to practice, join us at the UMBC Connects event with ERT on Wednesday, February 28th from 11 AM to 2 PM.

Make a Strong Start. Exude confidence
when you make an introduction. Have good eye contact, stand up straight, and
give a firm handshake (if you're comfortable with it). Clearly introduce
yourself and speak at a steady pace so you're understandable.

Honor Your Personal Brand. Show your
authentic self and establish who you are right out of the gate. Be ready to
explain what motivates you to do what you do. You should also be able to very
    clearly express your why.

    Sell Yourself with Ease. After
introducing yourself it's time to get into the heart of your pitch: your
accomplishments. Highlight academic achievements, internships, other relevant
experiences, and your strengths. Be clear, concise, and persuasive, and make
sure there's evidence to back up your claims.

    Deliver
with Poise. Before the fair you must practice, practice, and practice some
more. Your pitch should not sound scripted or over rehearsed. Your goal is to
make a memorable impression when you meet employers. Make sure that your
delivery sounds natural but also confident.

Close the Deal. The end of the pitch is when you tie your experiences back
to the employer. Share how your goals and accomplishments can benefit the
company you're pitching. They should easily connect the dots on how you're bringing value to them.

Marketing yourself is no easy task, but it's necessary when
it comes to the job market. We hope these considerations were helpful. Feel
    free to check
out this webpage for additional tips, and go to Big Interview to
practice answering the question "Tell me about yourself." Best of luck out
    there and happy pitching!

    Abstract:

"Dust events are a weather phenomenon common in many locations worldwide, they occur when strong winds pick up dust particles increase their concentration in the air reduce visibility, and impact Earth's climate, the environment, air quality, well-being, and human health. Multiple studies indicate that the number of dust events has increased across the United States and climate models project that trend to continue.

Dust events across the US can be of varying intensities (blowing dust vs. dust storm) and types (synoptic vs. convective), but their distributions (spatial, temporal, or type) and impacts across the US are unclear. Therefore, there is a need to better understand their spatial and temporal distributions, the meteorological conditions that initiate them, and those measured during them. A new dust database, under development, will help answer these unknowns. This new dust database identifies dust events based on ground meteorological stations spread across the US, and confirmation each using different tools (including changes in PM, satellite images, IMPROVE, AERONET, etc.).

Although dust events are common across many regions of the U.S., their impacts are not often prioritized in air quality mitigation strategies. Different factors result in dust receiving less attention, and these factors limit our understanding of the impacts of dust events on its many social and environmental impacts, including its impact on air quality and human health. These limitations will be covered and an understanding of the impact these dust particles have on air quality and human health will be presented."

Biography:

Karin Ardon-Dryer, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geosciences at the Atmospheric Science Group at Texas Tech University. Before joining TTU she was a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Earth, Atmosphere, and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); and later a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of System Biology at Harvard Medical School at Harvard University. Dr. Ardon-Dryer received her Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from the Department of Geophysics, Atmospheric and Planetary Science, and the Porter School of Environmental Studies at Tel Aviv University in Israel. She received her master's in the Department of Geography and Environmental Development at Ben Gurion University with a focus on Geomorphology and Remote Sensing.

Dr. Ardon-Dryer studies the effect that aerosols (mainly dust particles) have on climate, the environment, and our health. In particular, she takes an interdisciplinary approach and combines field and laboratory work to investigate the interaction between humans and climate; exploring the human effects on climate, and vice versa, namely, how climate may affect our lives (e.g. health) in the short and long term. She is also running the measurement station AEROS (Aerosol Observation Station) which helps to study the characteristics of atmospheric particles during dust events, to understand the different meteorological conditions that generate dust events and their impact on air quality and climate. She also investigates the effects that aerosol particles have on human health, using an interdisciplinary approach, she developed, that observes the effect of air pollution particles on health at a single-cell level.

Dr. Ardon-Dryer is a PI on several NSF grants, a Co-PI on a NASA grant, and the lead scientist on an EPA community organization grant. She is also the director of the U.S. She Space International project which is an international project with 10 different countries from around the world, focusing on introducing 14-16 high school girls to STEM via remote sensing.

Miss the deadline for Summer Study Abroad? Still want to go?

<Tagline>Deadline extended for Faculty-led Study Abroad in the UK!</Tagline>

The deadline for this summer's faculty led study abroad program Social and Ethical Issues in Information Technology (CMSC 304) in England had been extended! The deadline to apply is now Monday, February 26th. Course prerequisites are waived for anyone who wants to participate (ENGL 100 prerequisite still applies). This course is open for students in all majors and will meet the Study Abroad/Global Experience requirement for GLBL majors, in addition to fulfilling an Arts and Humanities GEP, and providing three upper level credits! This is an excellent opportunity for GLBL majors interested in security, privacy rights, and international data flow. This course will provide insights into foreign laws and ethical considerations to broaden student perspectives on the global nature of computer science and information technology

There is also information on the Education Abroad website about scholarships available to students in the CAHSS majors. Non-STEM majors are welcomed and encouraged to apply. Usually, students in CAHSS or CNMS wouldn't be taking CMSC 304, so they may have passed over looking this study abroad option. Please help spread the work and encourage any interested students contact the Education Abroad Office (educationabroad@umbc.edu).

Friday, March 1, 2024, 12 - 1 PM

Hosted by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life

The BreakingGround initiative awards grants of up to $2,500.00 to UMBC faculty, staff, and students to implement educational and community-building courses and programs that foster civic agency: the capacity to initiate and make meaningful contributions to social change.

In this virtual information session, we will review the program and answer your questions. To register for this session, go to the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's event here.

The options for using these funds are flexible, but some ideas include: experiential learning opportunities for students, student and community-engaged research projects, time to design deep transformations of existing curricula to be oriented toward civic agency, and resources for engagement with social changemakers and local communities. For a list of previous awardees, see here.

For more information and to apply, visit our website at this link. Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis, and when you apply, we will contact you within two weeks of submission.
