like there aren't enough hours in the day, and when we're busy what ends up
falling to the wayside? Probably sleep. But
sleep is actually one of the most important ways to promote healthy brain
function- including concentration and memory- the things you need to succeed in
    college! Join Retriever Integrated
Health to talk about some ways to improve sleep and learn how RIH's counseling

Mindfulness

Feelings of anxiety
can interrupt daily life and can be difficult to bounce back from. One practice
that can help prevent anxiety and panic from taking over is mindfulness.
Mindfulness is a state of nonjudgmental awareness of what is happening in the
present moment, including the awareness of one's own thoughts, feelings, and
senses. The ability to be mindful can reduce symptoms of depression, improve
memory, enhance relationships, and improve your ability to manage emotions.
During this workshop, you will learn the benefits of mindfulness practices and
    be guided through various exercises.

NASA’s PACE satellite is in space!

On February 8, 2024, A SpaceX Falcon 9 launched the Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) satellite for NASA from Cape Canaveral's Space Launch Complex at 1:33 a.m. EST.

Over the last 5 years, Physics professor J. Vanderlei Martins' research group in the Earth and Space Institute developed the Hyper-Angular Rainbow Polarimeter 2 (HARP2). HARP2 is one of the three main instruments on the PACE satellite.

PACE represents the next step on the measurement of aerosols, clouds and ocean ecology from space. The unique combination of instruments on PACE (OCI, HARP2, and SPEXOne) provides an unprecedented capability to characterize aerosol microphysics, clouds, and surface properties (over ocean and land). PACE has a combination of hyperspectral and hype-angular polarization measurements never before flown in space. This opens up a new generation of passive instruments for the global monitoring of our planet.

UMBC’s HARP2 instrument is a specialized wide field-of-view camera that is sensitive to polarized light and will image the entire Earth every two days. HARP2 expands on the preliminary steps of HARP CubeSat (a previous technology demonstration) providing the global monitoring of aerosols, clouds and surface properties from space. HARP2 will characterize the amount and type of particulate matter (pollution) resulting from forest fires, dust, volcanic emissions, urban emissions, etc., and the size of the droplets on liquid clouds, as well as the identification between liquid water and ice.

The development of HARP2 involved UMBC, GESTAR, JCET, and NASA faculty, as well as many external collaborators and contractors. ATPH graduate students Noah Sienkiewicz and Rachel Smith have contributed significantly to the HARP2 development and testing as well, and their PhD work will uniquely combine engineering and science aspects of HARP2 and its data.

Congratulations to all, including our Physics faculty, staff, and students who were involved with this mission!

Leila Cron, sophomore, visual arts

What is something you do as part of your position that people may not be aware of?

I wear quite a few hats within Campus Life, but I think one part of my position that most people may not be aware of is my role as a certified Mental Health First Aid Trainer. Although I'm a bit of an introvert, I am very passionate about sharing these important resources with my University colleagues. Being able to recognize mental health concerns and offer thoughtful assistance is not only useful within the UMBC community, but in our personal lives as well.

What is one of the most important things you've learned during your time here?

I actually started my journey with UMBC in 2006 as an older student. I'd recently made some big changes in my life by moving across an ocean and the country with a three-year-old and felt completely out of my element. As a new Retriever, I was not only welcomed warmly by the Admissions staff and professors, but that warmth was spread to my toddler as well. On the rare occasion that I was left without a sitter, my professors would allow me to bring Leila to class while I continued my studies. It was through this experience that I learned of UMBC's unwavering care for their student population and commitment to creating community for everyone, no matter their age, race or demographic. That commitment has remained.

What do you like to do for fun and/or is something you are passionate about outside of work?

I love to travel and explore the history and art scene of different environments. The highlight of my year is traveling with friends to see our favorite band. When I am unable to travel I like to spend time watching terribly cheesy television programming and trying to educate my daughter on the superior genre of 80's music.

("Three Questions With Maisha Cron" will be published in the February 2024 issue of "DoSA Matters," the division's internal e-newsletter. )
