Visual Concept Learning Beyond Appearances: Modernizing a Couple of Classic Ideas

The goal of Computer Vision, as coined by Marr, is to develop algorithms to answer "What are", "Where at", "When from" visual appearance. The speaker, among others, recognizes the importance of studying underlying entities and relations beyond visual appearance, following an Active Perception paradigm. This talk will present the speaker's efforts over the last decade, ranging from 1) reasoning beyond appearance for vision and language tasks (VQA, captioning, T2I, etc.), and addressing their evaluation misalignment, through 2) reasoning about implicit properties, to 3) their roles in a Robotic visual concept learning framework. The talk will also feature the Active Perception Group (APG)'s projects addressing emerging challenges of the nation in automated mobility and intelligent transportation domains, at the ASU School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence (SCAI).

Yezhou (YZ) Yang is an Associate Professor and a Fulton Entrepreneurial Professor in the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence (SCAI) at Arizona State University. He founded and directs the ASU Active Perception Group, and currently serves as the topic lead (situation awareness) at the Institute of Automated Mobility, Arizona Commerce Authority. He is also a thrust lead (AVAI) at Advanced Communications Technologies (ACT, a Science and Technology Center under the New Economy Initiative, Arizona). His work includes exploring visual primitives and representation learning in visual (and language) understanding, grounding them by natural language and high-level reasoning over the primitives for intelligent systems, secure/robust AI, and V&L model evaluation alignment. Yang is a recipient of the Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship 2011, the NSF CAREER award 2018, and the Amazon AWS Machine Learning Research Award 2019. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland at College Park, and B.E. from Zhejiang University, China. He is a co- founder of ARGOS Vision Inc, an ASU spin-off company.

Google Jamboard, a cloud-based digital whiteboard app, has been a popular choice for instruction and group collaboration. Along with the announced end of support for Google's Jamboard devices, Google has announced that support for the Jamboard app will wind down in late 2024.

Jamboard Retirement Timing

October 1, 2024 is the last date that it will be possible to create new or edit existing Jams. Existing Jams can be accessed to view or export from October 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024. Please export any Jams you wish to retain by December 31, 2024.

Microsoft Whiteboard

For current Google Jamboard users, Microsoft Whiteboard offers similar features for collaboration in the physical or virtual classroom. Accessibility and Disability Services and Student Disability Services joins The Mosaic Center and all UMBC partners with honoring Black History Month.

Rediscover how some members of the Black Civil Rights Movement also played essential roles as activists in the US Disability Rights Movement, and paved the way for disability rights activists to influence social change and legislation. Many people with disabilities were part of both movements and continue to be today.

Dr. Sami Schalk presented at UMBC less than a year ago on 504 and Beyond: Disability Politics and the Black Panther Partyvia the Dresher Center - the and co-sponsorship with ADS and I3B.

Some of the intersection of  Crip Camp shows how intersectional being black and disabled can be - beyond the Black Panthers. Further back in history, learn new things about the famous Black figures who also had disabilities. For instance, Harriet Tubman lived with epilepsy and narcolepsy, a reminder that disability is both directly and indirectly linked to many forms of violence.

In the links described below, you may rediscover or learn for the first time about Black history  being made in this moment, and there is so much to learn from the past.  Research forays have been known to start at Brad Lomax, and end up at the Wild Zappers, a DC-based all black all deaf dance company - what new-to-you ancestral influencers and history-makers will become front-of-mind to you? The research of Dr. Stephanie Keeney Parks takes a racially nuanced approach to Autism via In A Different Key. In 2022 Megan Thee Stallion launched a website to support mental health.  Haben Girma remains an important advocate for disability inclusion.

Title of position: School Social Work Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
I provide social work services and supports to elementary schoolers. These are both universal supports to the entire elementary school and individualized supports for students with social-emotional developmental delays. A typical day for me is a mix of crisis support, generalist services like the food bank or the social-emotional curriculum, networking with our community partners to bring services to the school, and having the silliest conversations all with the students' needs in mind.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
This is my Field Placement with the BSW program. I was recommended for this placement by my social work advisor, and the applications were through the program as well as through the BCPS social work processes.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
BSW Program

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
I love working with kids and being able to be there for them when it can often feel like the systems are working against them. We were all kids at one point, and although looking back it may not seem like it, it truly is a challenging part of our lives. I enjoy being able to help them through that process.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I know I am making a tangible impact on these kids' lives. Seeing them reaching their goals and being able to make friends, express their feelings and needs, and improve their overall well-being, it is super meaningful to me.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
I would highly recommend going for it. Even if you are not sure that it will be applicable to your field, trust me, it will be. The skills you will obtain just through going through the process and then showing up are helpful in whatever professional field. Go for it!
