!! HOT OPPORTUNITY !!

The Maryland Department of Information Technology is interested in working with UMBC to create a pilot of the "CyberShield Academic Consortium" to assess the cybersecurity posture of local governments in Maryland.

Working with UMBC's Maryland Institute for Innovative Computing (MIIC), we would like to identify 3-6 students with excellent academic credentials and strong professional skills to partake in an unpaid 3-credit CYBR 696 Internship (or equivalent undergrad course if necessary) for the Spring 2024 semester.

At this time, we envision the first half of the semester would be getting familiar with the Nationwide Cybersecurity Review (NCSR) framework and related policies under the direction of a MIIC staff member. The second half of the semester is anticipated to be a practical experience to conduct the NCSR with one local Maryland government. The goal of this team is to produce a written product highlighting how the process enforces theoretical policy frameworks and to develop insights about working with local government entities that my not have fully robust cybersecurity programs established. Successful members of this team may then have the opportunity to continue with the Maryland DoIT to do a full-time internship (funded by UMBC) in the following summer and fall. Additional Internship opportunities through the MIIC may be available in the future - we will announce them when available.

Most of this internship can be conducted fully remotely, however there may be occasional in-person on-site obligations later in the semester.

Desired qualities of interns for this opportunity include:

- Excellent academic records

- Solid professional skills (organization, time-management, research, critical thinking, teamwork, etc.)

- Strong communication skills (writing, communicating with outside partners, etc.)

- An understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals

- A basic understanding of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, as well as risk assessment and management

- Some technical proficiency and data analysis skills

- Eager to learn legal and compliance requirements 

- Ethical and professional conduct

GRAPHIC DESIGNER

We're looking for students who are comfortable working in:

• Illustrator CC+

• Photoshop CC+

• InDesign CC+

Bonus Points If:

• You have experience in pre- and post-production print, or any other kind of printing skills

• You have interest or experience with animation/motion design

• You can get super nerdy about typography

• You have an interest or experience in photography

Your personality is along the lines of:

• Self-motivated

• Team-oriented

• Attentive to details

• Manages time and deadlines well

• You love design too much

Non-negotiables:

• Be highly dedicated & organized

• Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher

• Must pass a judicial and ECR check

• Must have at least 2 on-campus semesters left

• Must be able to work at least 15 hours a week

• Be an undergraduate student

commonvision is UMBC's Design and Print Center, located in The Commons, Room 309. We are a full service print shop as well as a design and animation studio. Our Animators are responsible for advertisements for digital signage, social media, and the web for events and programs around campus. A great job for hands on, creative students who want to learn more about animation, motion graphics, and graphic design.

You do not have to be a visual arts major to apply to this position. This position requires working in the production room of commonvision. No printing experience is required; we will train the right person.

Students will be responsible for:

• Receiving, reviewing and processing print orders

• Prioritizing tasks for efficiency and tight deadlines

• Modifying existing digital projects using InDesign, Illustrator & Photoshop

• Running print jobs on wide format and large volume printers

• Take the lead installing projects around campus

• Using other finishing services as required by the project
