Study Tip of the Week: Academic Resolutions

<Tagline>Stick to them this semester!</Tagline>

Welcome to our Weekly Study Tip post! This week is about setting academic resolutions for the new semester.

You can check out our YouTube video on this topic and also download the accompanying handout from GoogleDrive.

Here are some tips for you, once you've set your goals for the semester:

1. Create Action Steps

Break those goals down into smaller and smaller goals until you figure out what you can do every day to make a little bit of progress towards them. That might be ten minutes of drilling your Quizlet/Anki flashcards, or maybe ten extra chemistry or math practice problems. Goals aren't met in one fell swoop - you have to work at them every day!

2. Track Your Progress

We have a list of apps we love for progress/streak tracking and keeping a good calendar! Check them out:

Habitica: https://habitica.com/static/home

TickTick: https://ticktick.com/?language=en_US

Habit Tracker: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/habit-tracker/id1438388363

Streak: https://streaksapp.com/

3. Create Some Accountability

Try studying with a friend, even if you're doing different things! Or have someone text you every morning to ask if you did the habit you're trying to build. It helps to have someone check in or even work in a group.

Want more on this topic? Check out our workshop on Wednesday! Details:

NIH Guidance on Salary Limitation

Guidance
on Salary Limitation for Grants and Cooperative Agreements FY 2024

Notice Number: NOT-OD-24-057

Purpose

This Notice provides
information regarding the salary limitation for NIH grant and cooperative
agreement awards and extramural research and development contract awards.

Since 1990, Congress has
legislatively mandated a limitation on direct salary for individuals under NIH
grant and cooperative agreement awards (referred to here as a grant). The
mandate appears in the annual appropriation act that provides authority for NIH
to incur obligations for a given Fiscal Year (FY). At this time, NIH has not
received an FY 2024 appropriation and is operating under a Continuing
Resolution, the "Further Continuing Appropriations and Other Extensions
Act, 2024 (Public Law 118-22)”, that applies the terms and conditions of the
    Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023.

The Consolidated
Appropriations Act, 2023 restricts the amount of direct salary to Executive
Level II of the Federal Executive pay scale. The Office of Personnel Management recently released new salary levels
for the Executive Pay Scale. Effective January 1, 2024, the salary limitation
for Executive Level II is $221,900.

For active awards,
including awards that have been issued in FY 2024 (continuation and new) that
were restricted to Executive Level II, if adequate funds are available, and if
the salary cap increase is consistent with the institutional base salary,
recipients may rebudget funds to accommodate the current Executive Level II
    salary level.

Once the Department of
Health and Human Services Appropriation for FY 2024 is enacted, NIH will
publish the annual Notice of legislative mandates to provide information on any
statutory provisions that limit the use of NIH grant funds in FY 2024.

Please refer to the full
announcement linked below for more details.

He teaches courses in sound studies, African American rhetorical traditions, media literacy, rhetorical theory, and composition. Brooks argues that there would have been no Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Movement, or Black Arts Movement as we know these phenomena without Black music. Brooks’s work also appears in Sounding Out!, Rhetoric Review, Journal for the History of Rhetoric, Langston Hughes Review, and College Composition and Communication. Brooks is also a proud alumnus of the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program, and he serves as a UMBC McNair Faculty Mentor and advisory board member. Brooks also serves on the executive board of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) as a representative of the CCCC Black Caucus.
