The Marilyn Demorest Love of Learning Award is bestowed in recognition of the many significant contributions made by Dr. Marilyn Demorest as a key founder and seminal leader of Chapter 22 UMBC of Phi Kappa Phi.  Dr. Demorest's clear-eyed determination, detailed planning, and appreciation of both tradition and innovation infused the infant chapter with the carefully-built scaffolding needed for it to grow into the chapter we enjoy today.  Marilyn's dedication to PKP and her own love of learning are the foundation for this award.

Each spring, this chapter invites applications from its graduate student members. Two $500 awards will be distributed each year to the selected awardees.

Eligibility criteria for the award are as follows:  
(1)   Each graduate student applicant shall be a current member of Chapter 22 UMBC

(2)   Each graduate student applicant shall be selected on the basis of academic excellence as demonstrated by outstanding grades, academic honors, awards and recognition, and activities in the University or in the Community as well as through a clearly articulated essay (no more than 500 words) explaining what the PKP Motto means to them:

(3)   Each graduate student applying for the Marilyn Demorest Love of Learning Award must complete and submit the online application form no later than March 30, 2024

The winning applicant(s) will be notified by email by the end of April 2024.

Marilyn Demorest Love of Learning Award

"Spectrum of Process" presents a range of UMBC faculty approaches to art and culture through rigorous, experimental processes. The exhibition is interdisciplinary, including works of fine art, design, pedagogy, and the visual culture of research.

February 8, 6pm: Opening reception!

Join the faculty, staff, and students involved in "Spectrum of Process" for a celebratory reception.

February 14, noon: Research and Process, featuring faculty and students involved in the "Can You Catch a Deep Fake?" and "Artifacts" research projects

Join researchers Lee Boot, Christine Mallinson, and their research teams for intimate discussions about two critical research activities at UMBC, focused on the topics of climate science and Deep Fake audio technologies. Both of these interdisciplinary research activities use visualization strategies to interpret and understand important changes in our environment and culture. The format of the conversation will be a gallery tour followed by Q+A.

February 21, noon: Julie Sayo, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design, presents Babayin Writing Workshop!

Julie Sayo is a Filipino-American graphic designer and educator. Her studio practice explores identity and the role of graphic design in decoloniality through the study and type design of Baybayin, a Tagalog writing system of the Philippines.
