KCI Technologies, Inc. His talk is titled "Source Apportionment of Canadian Wildfire Smoke PM2.5".

Abstract:
"Dr. Mark Gibson from KCI Technologies Inc., will present research on the source apportionment of wildfire smoke impacting the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. This project formed part of a larger U.K.-led study using satellites, aircraft, and other ground-based measurements to investigate the transport and composition of wildfire smoke leaving North America and destined for Europe. The measurements and modeling applications will be presented and discussed."
Biography:
Mark is a Senior Project Scientist with KCI in Sparks, MD and has over 20 years of experience conducting air quality and air compliance projects while in the U.K., Canada, and since 2019 the US. Prior to moving to the US, Mark was an Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering and Director of the Atmospheric Forensics Research Group at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Between 2015 and 2020, Mark was also a NASA project scientist on the North Atlantic Aerosols and Marine Ecosystems Study (NAAMES).

Course Description:The Anthropology of Gender concerns the wide range of meanings given to gender and sexuality in different settings. In exploring how gender and sexuality are culturally constructed the course does not focus on the biology of gender and sexuality per se. Rather, the course explores distinctive peoples understandings of gender and sexuality. Lectures focus on basic principles by which to examine gender in cross-cultural perspective. Readings focus on detailed and complex examples of distinctive gender and sexuality system.
- Are current sophomores or juniors having 1 or 2 years of undergraduate study remaining
- Have an average of at least B or the equivalent (FYI, in recent years, nationally competitive applicants have had a GPA above 3.3)
- Are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Have a demonstrated interest in a research career in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering. The eligible fields of study are described in more detail here. Note: Students who intend to pursue a health profession are only eligible if they plan to have a significant research component to their career path (e.g., an MD/PhD)
The application includes a
Research Essay that details either prior or proposed research by the applicant, so please keep this in mind as you share this information with potential applicants.
As a prestigious scholarship, the Goldwater Scholarship has a two-step selection process. Students' applications are first reviewed by the UMBC Goldwater Committee, which selects up to 4 UMBC students to nominate to the National selection process, and the nominees then complete the National application process.
In the past, Universities have been allowed an additional (5th) nominee if at least one applicant was a transfer student. This year they are allowing one additional nominee for a transfer student plus one additional nominee for a veteran student (for a max of 6 nominees)

FYI, this information has already been shared with Meyerhoff Scholars and their affiliated programs like URISE, so I encourage you all to think about students who have similar career goals and profiles but aren't a part of that circle, especially our transfer and veteran students!
