CSEE professor Dr. Cynthia Matuszek will be one of this year's GRIT-X event speakers during the 2023 UMBC Homecoming celebration. Each of the nine speakers will give a 10-12 minute talk on their research and creative achievement. 

Dr. Matuszek's topic is "Talking to Robots - The Role of Language in Human-Robot Interaction." As robots become more common and begin to make their way into human environments, it becomes more important for them to interact comfortably with end users. One way to accomplish that is to build robotic systems that can use natural languages (human languages, such as English) to interact with and learn from people around them. In her talk, she will describe the concept of grounded language -- language that robots can use to understand the physical world around them -- and talk about the promise, as well as some of the risks, of language-using robots.

The 2023 UMBC GRIT-X event takes place on Saturday, October 14, from 2-4 pm in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. After the talks, you can join the speakers for a post-event reception in the lobby.

Advisors meet with incoming students VIRTUALLY during the month of January in one-on-one sessions to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!

We are offering informational sessions for anyone interested or who even just MIGHT be interested in finding out about this exciting opportunity to expand their skillsets, make meaningful connections, serve their departments, and get paid!

Every spring, UMBC's Department of Political Science sponsors students to serve as interns for the Maryland General Assembly, a part of Maryland's legislature that meets from January through April. Students who are interested in politics, policy, and public administration are strongly encouraged to apply to be a Maryland General Assembly intern for the 2024 session.

Depending on your field, your time as a student may not open you up to many client-facing interactions, and this is a pathway to gaining that experience. If you are considering ANY career path where importance is placed on the ability to interact with clients in a positive manner, this is a TERRIFIC opportunity to add this valuable experience to your resume. If you are considering a career in academia, meanwhile, advising experience specifically is highly sought-after in faculty openings.

Advising will be offered over the course of several days throughout the month of January. Upon hire, you will be given the opportunity to select which days you are available to advise, and then will be compensated at the rate of $100 per afternoon session and $50 per evening or morning session.
