October is LGBTQIA2+ History Month A Time to Celebrate Queer History
LGBTQ+ History Month originated in the United States, and was first celebrated in 1994. This month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer history celebrates role models, and the history of the LGBTQIA2+ rights and related civil rights movements. In the United States, it is celebrated in October to coincide with National Coming Out Day on October 11. However, countries recognize this month at different times of the year according to their specific significant events (e.g. United Kingdom recognizes this in February)

Founded by Missouri high-school history teacher, Rodney Wilson, many queer organizations supported the concept early on as did Governors William Weld of Massachusetts and Lowell Weicker of Connecticut, who recognized the inaugural month with official proclamations. In 1995, the National Education Association indicated support of LGBTQ+ History Month as well as other history months by resolution at its General Assembly.

So why do we have Pride Month in June and LGBTQ+ History Month in October?

Wilson chose October as the month for the celebration due to National Coming Out Day. It was established as a widely known event, on October 11, the date of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights that took place in 1987. June is recognized as Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall Riots taking place on June 28-July 1.

The Becker Friedman Institute (BFI) PREP program has opened applications for full-time pre-doctoral research roles beginning Summer 2024. These roles, working closely with faculty supervisors and which normally last two years, serve as a bridge between college and graduate school for students interested in empirical economics, with program alumni consistently placing in top PhD programs. The program also offers unique research and professional training opportunities at the University of Chicago. Please share the positions open at both BFI and the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago with students in your networks. Additionally, we will host an information session on October 9 at 8:30 a.m. central to answer questions about the application process, please register here to attend.

Dear UMBC Community,
 
For the second time in less than a week, a local university community has seen its celebrations marred by gun violence. This time the incident occurred at Bowie State University, one of our fellow University System of Maryland institutions. While the two people injured in the shooting Saturday are not Bowie State students, the campus community is nevertheless feeling the impact of this incident. I have extended a message of care to Bowie State President Aminta H. Breaux, and I know that the entire Bowie State family is in our thoughts. 
 
As we advised last week after the incident at Morgan State, please avail yourselves of the support resources at UMBC as needed, including Retriever Integrated Health’s mental health services and resources for helping others, as well as our Employee Assistance Program. Please also review our information and resources related to emergency management and make sure you are signed up to receive emergency alerts.
