Happy Friday Retrievers!We have great events lined up for you all over the next few days.
The McNair Scholars virtual event will be the perfect opportunity for First Gen students to explore different ways of receiving funding for either undergraduate or graduate education. This virtual event will take place on Saturday, October 7th from 1-2:30pm. NSF funding is available for everyone despite their major, so this event is non-STEM major friendly. There will also be an opportunity for students to ask NSF reps questions towards the end of the event.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
I'm worried about a friend, what can I do?
When we suspect relationships are mentally, emotionally or physically violent or abusive, why do we all of a sudden feel like "it's none of our business?"
Good question! Is it ever REALLY our business to get involved when we suspect that someone we know is in a relationship that is unhealthy? Maybe we are asking the wrong question. The REAL question is, How can we support people that we care about, when we believe that they are in a relationship that is hurting them? Wouldn't we want someone to show up for us if we were struggling?
More than 1 in 3 women (35.6%) and more than 1 in 4 men (28.5%) in the U.S. will experience rape, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
Overall the percentages of Trans and LGBTQ+ individuals who are affected byintimate partner violence are estimated to be even higher than their cisgender counterparts.
Based on these statistics, the chances are you've known someone, will know someone or will be someone who will experience a relationship that is mentally, emotionally or physically abusive.
So what do you say? Where do you start?
Consider these tips:

Start by initiating a conversation that lets your friend know that you care about them and are concerned: Start this conversation with an affirmative statement like, "You're always so fun to be around. I've missed you!"

Avoid being Accusatory: If you know your friend's relationship is unhealthy, it's okay to say, "I've noticed you're always on your phone. Is there anything going on that you want to talk about?" Instead of, "Stop answering that. Just tell them you're busy."

Be Supportive: Listen to your friend and let them open up about the situation on their own terms. Don't be forceful with the conversation and remind them that you want tohelp.

Leadership Searches Update
Launching search for VP for Communications and Marketing
Dear UMBC Community,
I write to share updates on two searches for key university leadership roles: vice president for communications and marketing and provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.
First, I am pleased to announce that we are beginning the search for the vice president for communications and marketing. University Communications and Marketing, formerly part of the Office of Institutional Advancement, comprises a
team of talented individuals dedicated to advancing our mission by telling the UMBC story and engaging diverse audiences and stakeholders here on campus, among our alumni, families, and friends, and externally in our local and statewide communities and the wider world. As this new division continues to evolve, we aim for it to provide comprehensive strategic leadership for the university in all areas of communications and marketing--to ensure that the world knows UMBC and the difference it makes in the lives of individuals, in the creation of knowledge, and in the advancement of an informed, equitable global community. The vice president will report to me and serve as a member of UMBC's senior leadership team.
I am delighted that UMBC will partner in this search with Isaacson, Miller. My thanks to the following individuals who have agreed to serve on the search committee for this role:

We will develop a position profile and begin recruiting very soon. We anticipate moving expeditiously to fill the role. Angela Paik (formerly Angela Paik Schaeffer) continues to serve in the role on an interim basis, helping to advise me and support the work of our communications and marketing team.
Regarding the search for a permanent provost: As you will recall, we are extending that search in partnership with Isaacson, Miller. The search committee, whose members are listed
here, continues to serve, chaired now by Linda Dusman, professor of music. Anupam Joshi stepped down as committee chair when he took on his new role as acting dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology. I would like to thank Anupam for his leadership and service on the search committee.
We expect to have a permanent provost by next summer. Interim Provost David Dauwalder will serve at UMBC through this academic year. My thanks to our interim leaders, Angela and David, and to all who will take part in these important search processes.

Considering Graduate or Professional School?
Here are some tips to get the process started!
Choosing to attend Graduate or Professional school is a big decision. It’s a process that takes time and persistence. Students who want to pursue post-undergraduate education must start planning early, as many factors go into a successful application. As you explore programs and start the application process, here are some useful tips to remember!
Take time to find the right program fit!
Is something in your major or academic program drawing you to consider applying to graduate or professional school? Don’t be afraid to start the conversation with advisors or professors in your academic department and think about pathways that might be right for you. UMBC faculty were once where you are right now and will undoubtedly have great insight into the process or connections to programs that might interest you. Use your networks to your advantage!
Once you research programs that interest you, try to visit those schools – check out in-person and virtual admissions/recruitment events put on by the institutions and connect with the campus. You’ll be able to explore the campus and learn about the surrounding area, housing options, and the studio/classroom/lab facilities. You should ask yourself: “How is the campus, and does it seem like the type of environment I would like to spend time in?”
You’ll also have the chance to connect with program directors, faculty, and current graduate students. You’ll want to consider whether the program has a professor who shares your research areas of interest. Meeting current students is significant if your program will use a “cohort” model – meaning you will work with the same people throughout the program.
Finally, research class options – some programs will provide more flexible schedule options, including evening, weekend, or online classes, while other programs may only offer classes throughout the day.
Graduate Admissions
Some graduate and professional programs will require you to complete an entrance exam, like taking the SAT or ACT when applying to UMBC. You should always research to see if an entrance exam is required for your program. Check out the list below for common exams you might be expected to take:
- Dental School: DAT (Dental Admission Test)
- Business and Management Schools: GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test)
- Master’s and Doctoral Programs: GRE (Graduate Record Examination) *Most common graduate admissions exam*
- Law School: LSAT (Law School Admission Test)
- Medical School: MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)
For graduate programs in the Visual or Performing Arts (such as Master of Fine Arts), you might need to prepare for an audition or portfolio submission of creative work. It’s important to research all the components necessary for any application and make sure you start the application process early!
Letters of Recommendation –
ask early and ask people who know you best!
Most graduate or professional school applications will require you to submit letters of recommendation. Your recommenders should be individuals who know you well, such as a professor who taught you in several courses or a research mentor.
Start by setting up a meeting to ask for a recommendation, which will help emphasize how important the letter is to you and give you the chance to provide context and answer questions your prospective recommender might have. It is also helpful to provide relevant information to your recommenders such as an updated resume or any skills/abilities/notable accomplishments as it relates to your intended goals.
Plan to allow at least two months before the deadline to give your recommenders enough time to complete the recommendation.
Funding Graduate or Professional School
Another important aspect to consider is how exactly you will fund your graduate or professional school program. The UMBC Career Center does a great job of breaking down the different components of
financing your graduate education. It’s vital to ensure you understand if there are scholarships, grants, financial aid, or graduate assistantships are available through the program you are exploring.

You also don’t need to leave UMBC to find high- quality graduate education! The Graduate School at UMBC offers a variety of challenging programs to help you reach your academic and professional goals. Degree types include terminal doctorates, as well as Master’s degrees in the sciences, arts, public policy, and professional studies. Browse our over 80 graduate degree programs

Library Closure Now Saturday, October 21
Regular hours will resume October 22
Dear UMBC Community,
Due to the expectation of inclement weather on October 7, construction at the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery has been postponed to Saturday, October 21. The library is undergoing construction to fix leaks and install a new roof. On Saturday, October 21, construction will take place inside the library's atrium to work on the ceiling and the roof above the atrium and the Retriever Learning Center (RLC). The building will be closed for use on Saturday, October 21. The card swipe to the atrium and RLC will be deactivated at 5 a.m. on October 21, and will be reactivated at 6:30 p.m. The rest of the library and gallery building will remain closed until regular hours (noon to midnight) resume on Sunday, October 22.
We understand this may cause some inconvenience, but the closure is necessary to ensure everyone's safety and to complete the construction work in a timely manner. Signage on the RLC and library and gallery doors will serve as reminders for the upcoming work.

After initial approval, all GSOs must re-register with the Community Liaison at the beginning of every academic year.
The deadline has already passed this year, but we are offering an extended registration deadline until Friday October 20th, 2023.
