Books and Boys study on Black Women Freshmen
PAID longitudinal study
Books & Boys is a paid longitudinal study on cis hetero Black women's collegiate romantic experiences, sexual self-definition, and sexual health. This study will be one of the first to focus on Black college women’s intimate lives, beginning with their first semester, throughout their college career, and following up with them after college.
The principal researcher on the Books & Boys project is Dr. Mercedez Dunn-Gallier, an assistant professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Public Health. She’s also an affiliate faculty member in Gender, Women’s, + Sexuality Studies.
She is a proud alumna of Spelman College (C’2013) and earned her Master of Public Health in Health Behavior and Health Education and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Michigan.

October brings delegated grading to Ultra courses
Gradebook reminders, SafeAssign Direct Submit & more
The October update to Ultra brings a new grading workflow to large Ultra courses, allowing instructors to distribute grading for an assessment to multiple graders. Instructors can assign graders to groups of students using delegated grading and the graders will only see those students they are assigned to grade including randomly generated groups.
The first phase of delegated grading supports individual assessments. In subsequent updates to this feature, delegated grading will support tests, group assessments, and anonymous submissions. Note: Delegated grading works with one grader per group of students whereas parallel grading works with multiple graders and therefore requires a reconcilement of grades.

Faculty can also send reminders to students about missed assessments directly from the Ultra gradebook. This feature includes all assessment types including Ultra created, third-party tools, and anonymous assignments. At this time, reminders can only be sent for assessments that are visible to students and when there are no release conditions. Reminders can be sent from the grid view or the list view in the gradebook.

The October update also allows faculty to submit student work to SafeAssign for originality review when not enabled as part of an Ultra assessment. SafeAssign Direct Submit appears as an instructor tool at the top of the Books & Tools peek panel in every Ultra course, enabling faculty to upload Microsoft Office files, PDF, RTF, HTML, and ZIP files, or copy and paste content for review. Submissions are added to the institutional database unless otherwise specified by the instructor.

Please note: SafeAssign does not review for AI-generated content at this time. An integration of GPTZero for SafeAssign was postponed by the vendor
due to concerns related to ethics, accuracy, and bias in the evaluation of student submissions (see Anthology white paper, 2023).
Assessment & Grading
- Instructors can now copy their custom grading schemas from Ultra and Original courses to other Ultra courses. These schemas are listed in a Grading Schemas folder on the Copy Items panel.
- Ultra tests will auto-distribute partial credit across correct answer choices. If desired, instructors can edit the values if some correct answer options warrant more or less credit.
- Graders can now post Bb Annotate comments without disclosing their names. Instructors have the option to mark inline comments as anonymous when creating them or even after comments are added.
Other updates in October include
- While Messages are enabled in all Ultra courses and cannot be turned off, in October, faculty will have the option to customize how students can interact with those messages. For example, students can message anyone or they can only message the instructors.
- Instructors can edit many settings for third-party tools on an assessment or tool link including Name/Title, Description, Release Conditions, and more.
Faculty should see the latest updates in Ultra courses around October 5-6 2023. The next update to our Ultra test environment will take place on October 10, 2023; release notes are posted to the What's New in Ultra that same week. Critical Language Scholarship Program Info Sessions
Study a Language Abroad This Summer with a CLS Award!
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully-funded language-intensive summer study abroad program geared to promote rapid language gains and essential intercultural fluency in regions that are critical to U.S. national security and economic prosperity. Each summer, American undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities across the country, spend eight to ten weeks learning one of fourteen languages at an intensive study abroad institute.
The CLS Program is offering multiple webinars to help applicants learn more about languages both taught at UMBC, as well as strategic languages not taught here, such as Azerbaijani, Indonesian, Persian and Turkish. UMBC has a long history of its students receiving these competitive awards.

Week 4 of Tabletop Gaming Club
Welcome to Week 4 of UMBC Tabletop Gaming Club!
Our regular meetings will take place on Tuesday (10/03) and Thursday (10/05), from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, in the familiar setting of ILSB 116A as normal. These gatherings are the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in thrilling tabletop adventures and games. Feel free to bring your own TTRPGs or board games to share with the club; your active participation is highly encouraged.
As a special treat, we have two noteworthy events on the horizon:
First, mark your calendars for Thursday, October 27th, as we will be hosting a Halloween-Themed D&D One-Shot Campaign. This unique adventure promises spine-tingling excitement with a Halloween twist.
Then, on the scariest night of the year, October 31st, join us for our Halloween event. Don your most creative and chilling costumes because we're hosting a costume contest with an excellent prize for the best-dressed participant. Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
My internship was mainly remote. I went into the office maybe less than 5 times throughout my 10-week internship. My day-to-day responsibilities included: cleaning up Purchase Order Histories, renewing/following up with C832 forms for Suppliers, attending virtual meetings for weekly/quarterly performances/goals, creating a Planner Guide, and emailing/calling to coworkers about status of items.
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
It all started at the UMBC Career Fair in Fall 2022. I dressed up in a suit with a laptop case bag with resumes inside and a pool cue billiard case. I heard from the Resume Help workshop that Northrop Grumman was a Gold Hire, which means they hire a lot of students from UMBC. The first stall I visited was them, and I got really lucky that I was one of the first ones in line. NG had two more career events that I attended and networked with the same person I saw at the fair. From there, she told me to apply to any positions that interest me. There were no internships, only full time positions, and I got rejected from them. Fortunately, in that rejection letter, they told me it's because I'm a student that cannot work full time hours but that they'd take me in as an intern, which they sent me a link for to submit an application. And I got accepted.
What resources did you use to find your current experience?
UMBC Career Center, Career Fairs, Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.)
What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
I loved that it was remote and the feeling of job security post grad.
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I believe I made an impact by cleaning up old issues that no one wanted to fix because everyone is focused on cleaning up current issues instead of issues from the past.
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Put your best foot forward. First impressions are everything. Dress to impress. I also got lucky because the person who scouted me and is my current manager used to be a state champ billiards pool player (I think) so when she saw my billiards case + my attire + my resume + my professionalism got my foot in the door. From there, be personable. Smile, laugh, engage.

Pre-Med Society Meeting: Visit from Dr. Ryan Gray
Hello Pre-Med Society Members,
Short notice, but we are excited to announce that we are tentatively hosting Dr. Ryan Gray in-person, on 10/4/2023, Wednesday, at 7 PM, in MEYR030, located at the center of the lower floor of the Meyerhoff Chemistry building.
Dr. Ryan Gray will discuss his own journey and motivation for students to be their best selves. He aims to discuss the writing process for personal statements, or interviews, and other aspects of the application process.
Some may know him from Youtube channel, but for a little background about our speaker, Dr. Ryan Gray is the co-founder and CEO of Mappd. He is also the publisher of Medical School Headquarters.
Prior to his entrepreneurial endeavors, Ryan was a former Flight Surgeon in the United States Air Force. Ryan graduated from the University of Florida with a BS in Exercise and Sports Sciences and received his MD from New York Medical College. After graduating from medical school, Ryan completed his internship through a Tufts Medical Center transitional medicine program at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital.
We hope that you can join us, as this is a great opportunity especially for those unfamiliar with the process, or just looking to gain some more insight. As always, feel free to reach out to us with any questions.
