Student Health Insurance Reminders
Submit your waiver by Friday, September 15!
Time is running out for you to waive student health insurance coverage!
If you have an insurance plan through your job, your parents, or Medicaid and you don't want UMBC's health coverage, make sure to complete your insurance waiver and upload a copy of your insurance card to the Retriever Care Portal by Friday, September 15th.
You can access the portal at
health.umbc.edu. Once you've completed the waiver and uploaded your insurance card, it will take the Insurance and Billing specialists some time to review your documents, so don't worry if it still says "Processing."
You can find out more information about the waiver for both International and Domestic students on our
website.
Saturday in the Park presented by Sun Scape Live and the Music City Maryland Association. Saturday September 16th 2023 at the CAA Park in Catonsville (202 Ingleside Avenue). The event runs from 3:00pm until 8:00pm. Free entry with donation. Food provided by the Atlantic Food & Spirits and drinks and adult beverages will be available. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and come and relax and enjoy the music! No outside coolers allowed. On the UMBC shuttle route!

Supporting Faculty/Staff in Navigating and Leading Change
HR offering new sessions Oct. 18-25 from FranklinCovey
Dear Colleagues,
It was leadership development expert John Maxwell who said: "Change is inevitable. Growth is optional." We all experience changes in our lifetime; how we choose to respond is up to us. Here at UMBC, we have already seen changes taking place on our campus as well as continuing changes to the evolving landscape of higher education itself. We understand that periods of transition can pose both challenges and opportunities for us personally, professionally, and organizationally. In order to be effective in our work, it is imperative that we equip ourselves with the knowledge, strategies, and a common language to understand, cope with, and adapt to change.
As we considered the challenge of supporting change, it became obvious that we needed a whole-system support structure that could be scaled up on campus quickly to address current and future needs. To that end, we have partnered with a respected leader in the field of change management, FranklinCovey, to launch one of their signature programs--
Change: How to Turn Uncertainty Into Opportunity. This course includes a series of change modules for individual contributors and campus supervisors (managers and leaders) on navigating and leading change. The FranklinCovey team will
facilitate campus sessions from October 18 - 25. See the attached flyer with session information as well as the program flyer from FranklinCovey detailing information on their change model and modules.
These experiential, engaging sessions address the multifaceted nature of change, offering insights, tools, and practical strategies that will empower you to thrive during times of transition.
Our hope is to offer this experience to as many faculty and staff as possible during this time frame, but space is limited. Given our commitment to extend this learning experience to everyone, we are also investing in 50 divisional representatives who will be designated as "Change Champions." These individuals will receive certification during the October timeframe to teach this FranklinCovey program and provide change support to staff within their division. Recruiting New IRB Members for the 2023-24 Academic Year
The Institutional Review Board (IRB), the formally designated UMBC committee to approve, monitor, and review research involving humans is currently accepting applications from students to join the committee. Graduate and Undergraduate students are considered full members of the board.
Student members serve for a one (1) year appointment and review research protocols, attend meetings, and vote on issues with the aim to protect the rights and welfare of the research subjects. Appointments begin in October 2023. The board typically meets 5 times during the academic year: October, December, February, April and June. Meetings are on Mondays from 10 am-12 pm.
This is a terrific opportunity to learn about ethical issues related to research. Also, being a member of the IRB looks good on a curriculum vitae or resume. Please contact

Welcome from UMBC's New VP for Student Affairs!
Hello Retrievers!
Welcome to the Fall 2023 semester! I am very excited to join the UMBC community as Vice President for Student Affairs, and as I have not met many of you yet I want to take a moment to introduce myself.
For me, this is a return "home" as UMBC is where I started my career in 2001. From my office window in The Commons, I can see the residential community where I worked as a community director. I loved the feeling of caring and connection I experienced on this campus then, and look forward to hearing about your own experiences and learning how I can be supportive.
I previously served as the Vice President for Student Engagement, Success, and Diversity at Simmons University in Boston, MA. My husband and I are incredibly excited about living in Maryland and are grateful for the warm Retriever welcome we've received already. It has been a joy to walk around campus and see how UMBC has grown. Like you, our sons are beginning a new academic year. John is in his first year of college at the University of Southern California and Jayden is a sophomore at Western Reserve Academy.
As I transition into this role, it is important for me to hear from you! I want to get to know you, hear how your semester is going, and listen to your hopes for your time at UMBC. Beginning September 13, I will host coffee chats on Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. in my office in The Commons, room 319. Please sign up online to reserve a time.
I am committed to ensuring that you feel a sense of belonging at UMBC and find the resources and experiences you need to be successful. There are many ways to get engaged, find your people, connect to resources for self-care, make a difference, and just have fun. I hope you will take advantage of these opportunities, and know that it is okay to ask for help if you need it.
