Large multi-institutional, multi-PI proposals are becoming increasingly appealing as they provide opportunities for implementing large-scale research agendas. However, applying for these proposals can be burdensome for both the faculty and the administration.
In this session, Hanover shares key tips and strategies for moving these unwieldy projects forward, including dealing with challenging personalities, handling document control, running meetings effectively, and more.

Each week, a new CTF challenge will be released. They will be fun, beginner-friendly, and designed to help build your skills. There will also be cool tech prizes for the top solvers.
Compete in CDE
Our Cyber Defense Exercise (CDE) will be on Saturday, October 21. CDE is a Red/Blue competition open to all UMBC undergraduates. It is a great way to get the taste of the competition environment and learn about cybersecurity. Information about registration will be out later this semester.

Leveraging Siamese Triplet Embeddings and Human Expert Data for Improved Reinforcement Learning Performance

Reinforcement Learning (RL) has shown great promise in solving complex decision-making problems. However, the high sample complexity of RL algorithms has motivated researchers to explore alternative approaches that can reduce the amount of data needed for learning. One such approach is to incorporate expert knowledge through supervised learning from human experts. This thesis explores using representation learning with Siamese networks to extract information from limited expert traces effectively. Experiments in the CartPole environment show the effectiveness of this approach. Both the accuracy of the classifiers at choosing the optimal action (label) is measured, as well as their ability to accumulate reward in the domain.

The program is the BSW component of the School of Social Work at University of Maryland, Baltimore.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers is hosting two facility tours at Northrop Grumman!
This Friday,
Sept. 8th, Northrop Grumman is kind enough to host the UMBC Society of
Hispanic Professional Engineers chapter at two of their facilities. SHPE
has an established partnership with the ADELANTE group at NG. They are
very generous to open up not one but TWO of their engineering facilities
for a student tour. There will be two tours happening consecutively:
Tour 1: NG's Sykesville Location
- Unit: Power & Controls Systems Business Unit
- Date: Friday, September 8th, 2023

- Technical Presentation related to Electrical Power Systems by Chief Engineer, Matthew Superczynski.

We will be attending NMUN DC from November 10th-12th, 2023. Should you apply and get accepted to the team, you will be obligated to attend one 1-hour meeting per week, the day/time of which is decided based on the team's collective availability, until we attend the conference. Should you choose, you may be registered for the 1-credit, upper level Political Science elective course, POLI384L. This "class" will be taught by myself, with some occasional assistance from our e-board.
A brief overview of Model UN and our semester timeline as a team is available in the description of the team application, hyper-linked above. Applications will be closed after 11:59pm, September 15th (that's next Friday!). We will notify you of your status by 10pm, Monday, September 18th.
