BWI airport pickup and temporary accommodation -new students
Together we can all survive grad school
Folks,
I want to thank Adebola for his fantastic job; this is a modification of his original post.
We are happy to announce that some members volunteered to assist our incoming graduate students.
Airport pickup from IAD would not be possible due to the logistics involved. However, cost-effective options for anyone coming through the route are listed below. These are estimates from IAD to BWI:
1. Shuttle service from IAD to BWI.
Varies with service providers
2. Subway/train
Average cost $5–$16
3. Ride-sharing service. E.g., Uber, Lyft,
The average cost is $108.00 - $221.00.
We can always arrange to pick up from BWI upon request; a minimum of 24 hours notice is required to enable proper assignment to our volunteers.
We secured two nights' temporary accommodation for new students without any prearranged accommodation. One slot is from our Alumni, and the other is from one of our volunteers.
We hope this update is relieving, especially for the new grad students.

Departmental shared drive downtime 8/19
As part of our continuing commitment to security the servers that provide the department network shared drives need to be taken down so the operating system can be upgraded and patched.
This Saturday, August 19th at 9:00pm, these servers will be taken off-line. This will impact connectivity to all network shared drives with letters I: through Z: with the exception of the P: (Peoplesoft) drive. Connectivity to the shared drives should be fully restored by 11:00pm that evening. While there is no action required for end users, people may want to reboot their machine Monday morning to ensure all the drive mappings reconnect properly.

Faculty and staff meal plans are available
Dear Colleagues,
Dining Services has new options for faculty and staff meal plans this year. If you sign up by August 18, the 70 or 100 meal block plans are eligible for payroll deduction. Purchased meals never expire -- and can be used at any dining location on campus except the Skylight Room. Enjoy a delicious all-you-care-to-eat meal at True Grit's or a meal from one of our exciting retail dining concepts in The Commons, including two new locations opening this fall semester: Copperhead Jacks, serving Southwestern-inspired burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and bowls, and Sorrento's, serving authentic deli subs, chicken wings, and more!
The attached flyer provides information on the meal plans as well as dining locations and hours of operation. Hope to see you all eating on campus this semester!

What this means to you.
If you have bookmarked links to reports, you will have to recreate or edit the bookmarks. The report server's new url will be https://rexprd-ssrs3.rex.umbc.edu/Reports.

We are looking for first year and transfer students to join!
Becoming a new student on a campus is a big step. There are a lot of cultural changes that you will have to undergo in order for that transition to be a smooth one. That is why it is important to familiarize yourself with all that the university has to offer, and the Student Government Association here at UMBC is offering just that opportunity.
The First Year Ambassador (FYA) program, is SGA’s year-long leadership development program that is open to first-year and new transfer students. This program teaches students the organization and functions of the Student Government Association at UMBC. Furthermore, it teaches FYAs how to take advantage of their agency to create the campus that best serves the needs of students. The FYA program sets students up with the network, resources, and skills to be an effective leader on campus.

Dr. Juan Sebastián Delgado to join UMBC Music Faculty
We are delighted to introduce cellist Juan Sebastián Delgado who will join the UMBC faculty in Fall 2023 as a Faculty Fellow for Diversity in the Arts. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Delgado to UMBC!
Argentinean cellist Juan Sebastián Delgado completed Doctoral studies in performance at McGill University in Montreal focusing on contemporary music and Nuevo Tango working with Matt Haimovitz. The CBC Radio Ideas chose his artistic research to be featured throughout Canada and he was the featured cellist in the episode Virtuoso Brain by the TV program Decouverte. Active in the creation and dissemination of new works that explore the cello in innovative ways, Juan Sebastián has conducted a variety of creation projects in 27 different countries, including three cello concertos written for him; Pájaro contra el borde de la noche for solo cello, ensemble and electronics by Luis Naon and commissioned by Radio France, Cinco Tangos Apócrifos for cello and string ensemble by Jorge Bosso (2016), and The Night of a Capricious Dawn (2022) for cello and orchestra by Jason Noble. Founding member of the duo Stick&Bow (cello&marimba), together with percussionist Krystina Marcoux, their eclectic repertoire features their own original arrangements and commissioned works. To date, they have performed in some of the top music festivals across Canada as well as international tours including France (JMF 2022 and 2023), Argentina (2022), and Colombia (2023). Analekta/Outhere recording artists, they have recorded 3 albums in 3 years; Resonance music for marimba and cello (2019), Bach's trio sonatas together with renowned baroque expert, Luc Beausejour (2021), and Veni, Vola, Veni (2022) featuring music by Piazzolla and Beytelmann together with tango piano legend Gustavo Beytelmann (ex-pianist of Astor Piazzolla).
