When to buy books?

hello, I’m curious if everyone is buying their books ahead of time. I’ve heard of some students that are there currently saying that sometimes the professors will provide the book and you don’t need to buy it but you find out first day of class. Obviously, this is all depends on your teacher and class but I’m curious if anyone has heard the same or to be safe you are just buying the books ahead of time?

Ultra Courses to Offer New AI Course Design Assistant Tools

<Tagline>Generate images, structure, test questions, and rubrics</Tagline>

As the landscape of education continues to evolve, the integration of cutting-edge technology into the classroom has become more vital than ever. The advent of generative AI tools is poised to revolutionize the field of higher education, transforming the virtual classroom into a dynamic and responsive environment. The potential for positive impact on productivity and efficiency for faculty is significant, opening new doors for innovation in teaching and learning as well as course development.

Instructional Technology invites faculty to preview the suite of new AI Course Design Assistant features during two webinars on Wednesday, August 23. Developed to assist faculty in streamlining course preparation, the AI Course Design Assistant tools include:

A course-builder assistant. Create sample learning modules, titles, and descriptions.

Image suggestion and creation. The assistant can draw from the Unsplash stock image library and suggest thumbnails for illustration in learning modules or identify an image for the course banner. Functionality also includes AI-generated image creation based on course name and keywords.

Content-based test generation. AI-powered algorithms analyze an Ultra document's content or inputted learning objectives and quickly generate a diverse set of questions for a test or question bank.

Rubric creation. Drawing on an assessment or discussion prompt’s content, the AI can analyze and streamline the rubric creation process according to specific learning objectives and assessment criteria.

Informed by Anthology’s Trustworthy AI Approach and seamlessly embedded into Ultra’s workflows, the AI Course Design Assistant tools are opt-in and the instructor is always in control of the content generated. Faculty can choose when, where, and how to leverage the tools in their Ultra courses.

Instructional Technology expects to launch the tools to the campus during National Distance Learning Week (Nov. 6-10) with a lunchtime series. Limited early access will be available to interested faculty upon request. As an advocate for social change through the arts, he has directed concerts that address LGBTQIA+ rights, mental health, women’s suffrage, criminal justice reform, and immigration policies. Since his early career, Truong was involved with pop a cappella ensembles, and is consequently known for programing nontraditional repertoire in addition to the beloved canon. He’s presented and led performances at various state and regional conferences throughout the United States, and curates student-centered, innovative, and expressive concerts that engage people on both sides of the stage.

Tryout Information for Fall 2023 Season

<Tagline>UMBC Men's Club Soccer tryouts information for Fall 2023</Tagline>

Hello to all!!

Welcome to UMBC's promotional website where we can broadcast some important information to you all. Please be sure to follow our instagram @umbcclubsoccer as that will stay more up to date than the promotional website. Our personal website will also be linked below so please take a look at that and it also holds our coach's email along with our President and VP's emails.

Please wear black for tryouts!

As for Fall 2023 Tryouts, here is all the information you will need to know (PLEASE READ IN FULL):

There will be 3-4 days of tryouts (August 30th 8-10pm, August 31st 8-10pm, and September 6th 7-8:30pm)  Each player will be given at least ONE day of tryouts.  Cuts can/will be made after your first tryout date that way we can quickly slim down the pool of players.  The first cut will not be very harsh but will be able to quickly weed out those not fit or not up to the technical ability that is desired/needed for UMBC Men's Club Soccer.  {Example: Player 1 can only make September 6th, that will be their first tryout date and afterwards will find out if they move on. Example 2: Player 2 can make August 30th, they will find out afterwards if they made it to day 2 which is August 31st. (If there are any questions about this please email our coach at award8@umbc.edu)}

Tryouts will cost $10 per person! This price is only paid ONCE, on the first day of your tryout. It is not an on going cost for each tryout you attend, only paid once! (Via cash, venmo, cashapp, or zelle)

To make the team you are required to make at least one of the tryout dates which can be found on the instagram along with the "Events" tab on the promotional website here.

Everyone will need water, cleats, socks, and running shoes. NO SLIDES or open toed shoes. If you're a goalie, please come prepared with everything you'd need to play a game.

All tryouts will be about 2 hours on the Stadium turf (next to the Chesapeake Insurance Arena) and please come at least 30 minutes prior to the start time so that we can go over everything as a group and also check in those that are new.

Make sure to keep your number if you make it to the next day as that will be the main way we can figure out who you are.

If anyone has any personal questions or are still curious about some things, please contact our coach at award8@umbc.edu or check our website for more simple questions.

WARNING: This is a real investment when it comes to time and dedication. We train three times a week on Monday/Wednesday from 7-8:30pm and Fridays from 7-9pm. We also strongly support the D1 Men's Soccer team so those home games are strongly important to be in attendance. There are also a ton of matches over the weekends along with a couple virtual meetings. So before considering trying out, please take these things into account and if you're hesitant due to these reasons or the training times, there is some flexibility and it is best to contact our coach through his email at award8@umbc.edu.

We hope to see everyone out on August 30th at 8pm!! This year will definitely have a lot to give to those who make the team. If you ever find any of previous UMBC Men's Club Soccer team members, never hesitate to ask how their experience was!!

Wish everyone a great Fall 2023 Semester and hope to see everyone in a couple weeks.

With summer quickly winding down we will be having some annual maintenance issues to deal with.

1) Sometime next week the purified water system will be sanitized using hyperchlorinated water. This will affect the laboratory RO systems in the research labs along with the racked fish systems in the Environmental Systems lab. The vivarium system will not be affected. This process takes approximately 3 days , so I'm shooting to begin next Tuesday, August 15th, subject to confirmation. Please stockpile any RO water you may require during that time prior to the sanitization occuring.

2) Furniture in the lobby had been re-organized sometime over the weekend, leaving visible scratches along the length of the floor. ABM is planning on stripping, mopping and waxing the entirety of the atrium either Monday or Tuesday night 11pm - 6AM. Anyone needing access overnight is asked to use the Physics facing doors and then the stairwell to the second floor to access elevators.

3) I have received a large shipment of paper towels and batteries for the towel dispensers. The new rolls will fit over the discontinued brand's core. If you need me to show you how to swap them out, please let me know.

And lastly, the new autoclave arrived without incident this morning, electrical work for the unit will be completed tomorrow, August 10th and possibly into Friday. Plumbing work should occur on Saturday, again subject to scheduling.

The unit will then be commissioned by Steris next week assuming the installs go as planned.
