Alum Bentley Corbett-Wilson trumpets the pep band and school spirit

Bentley Corbett-Wilson ’17, music education, M.A. ’20, teaching, is UMBC’s director of athletic bands, leading the school pep ensemble, the Down and Dirty Dawg Band. He is a musician (trumpet is his main instrument), band director at Lake Elkhorn Middle School, and faculty member at the International School of Music. But he introduces himself as UMBC’s pep band director first.

Q: How long have you been involved in music and performance?

A: I think I officially became a “musician” in middle school band in sixth grade. I joined the Las Vegas Youth Orchestra Philharmonic and traveled to China, then I performed in Carnegie Hall my senior year.

Q: What was your undergraduate experience at UMBC like?

A: From the beginning I really wanted to get super involved on campus to make it feel like a second home. I was involved in (seb), and was president of the Student Government Association my last year. I was also just doing things like honing in on the different skills that might make me a better person.

Q: Were you in the pep band as an undergraduate?

A: I was in it for two years and then was the student director for two years. I probably would have done it for my fifth year in college but as the SGA president, it felt like a little bit too much on my plate. I was still in the orchestra ensemble, so I got to have a performance outlet then, too.

Q: How did you come to be the current pep band director, and what’s the position like?

A: The pep band started in 1999, soI’m only its fifth director. When the band director knows it’s their time to leave, they put out an all-call for people who might be interested, or they reach out to someone musical and skilled.

(Marlayna Demond ’11/UMBC)

We’re under the Athletic Department, but we have a lot of autonomy over our musical decisions. So you make awesome experiences for all students in the band, and fans in the stadium.

Q: What’s your favorite pep band memory?

A: Being able to travel with the basketball team as they make their tournaments is so fun. The energy is awesome. You get to know that you are supporting your university at a different college. We have 40 people able to go to tournaments, and even though we’re all different majors with different backgrounds, we make music.

Q: Were you in the band during the famous 2018 UMBC vs. Virginia basketball game?

A: I wasn’t part of the band at the time, but I happened to bring my trumpet to the game. I ran down to the band section and played at the very end while we were winning. It was the coolest thing ever.

Q: What does “school spirit” mean to you?

A: Having school spirit means knowing what your university stands for, and doing your best to help create that in whatever way you choose to live by—professionally, academically, athletically, musically, etc.

(Marlayna Demond ’11/UMBC)

It’s also about showing your pride, whether that be going to events, donating, volunteering, or mentoring at UMBC. Do anything that you can to make the community better than you found it. Even just showing up is really great, because sometimes that’s all people need. UMBC does a really good job of stressing that idea of being there for others.

Q: How do you think the pep band showcases school spirit?

A: It is a really great place to practice being your best self. Not only is it one of the embodiments of school spirit, but music has so much to do with developing a person as a whole. I am proud to be the band director. Reach out if you want to join!

FWS/SURE Deadlines for Undergraduate Research Funding

Dear Colleagues,

If you are interested in funding to hire undergraduates to support your scholarly work, please note that two of the annual funding opportunities for this are closing today (FWS) and on August 25th (SURE). Both FWS and SURE are used to hire students for hourly positions.

The Federal Work Study (FWS) program, managed by UMBC Financial Aid and Scholarships, funds undergraduates who have been deemed eligible from a standpoint of financial need. Faculty and staff can request the creation of an FWS position. FWS-eligible undergraduates then apply to work in the positions that have been posted (i.e., the person who requested the position selects from amongst those who are eligible and apply). For best consideration, FWS positions should be requested by today.

The Supplement for Undergraduate Research (SURE) program, managed by the UMBC Office for Research Development, allows faculty members to hire undergraduates who are in their first four semesters at UMBC to support faculty-supervised scholarly work. SURE applications are due (using the same FWS application form) on Friday, August 25th.

More details on both programs, including how to apply, is available at https://research.umbc.edu/sure/.

Another funding opportunity to consider for future academic years, especially for working with undergraduates who are not SURE- or FWS-eligible, is the Undergraduate Research Award program.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can help in any way.

Reflections and Hope on the 33rd Anniversary of the ADA

Thank you for everyone who celebrated the 33rd Anniversary of the ADA, whether it was on campus with our Accessibility Tour, attending the ADS/SDS Open House, or engaging with opportunities to create awareness, inclusion and pride-of-identity for people with disabilities.

Lt. Governor Aruna Miller, on behalf of Governor Wes Moore, issued a
proclamation earlier in the week proclaiming July 26th to be a day of

Some good news from the Association of Higher Education and Disability/AHEAD (one of the professional associations that UMBC's ADS/SDS Staff belongs to)

"AHEAD is happy to share that on the 33rd Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Rep. Joe Morelle (D-NY) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) have reintroduced the Pell Grant for Students with Disabilities Act! (HR 5739 for those wanting to reach out to their Federal Representatives)

This
reintroduction is due to AHEADs continued efforts to work with Congress
to address an issue that has been raised time and time again by our
members as a stumbling block for students with disabilities to
successfully complete college. Students are in the position of having to
decide whether to follow their recommended course load or ignore the
recommendation and go with a full-course load in order to qualify for
the full Pell Grant amount for which they are eligible.

The
Pell Grant for Students with Disabilities Act, like its predecessor in
the last Congress, would allow students with disabilities to take the
recommended course load without losing Pell Grant funding by having the
U.S. Department of Education consider the recommended course load as
equivalent to a full course load (which is 12 credits)." -AHEAD listserv

Don't be shy about
reaching out to your elected officials. Closer to home, resources for
campus members and visitors with disabilities include: Student Disability Services, Accessibility and Disability Services (Employees and Visitors), and UMBC's online form for reporting accessibility concerns.
As Disability Pride Month comes to a close, please know we honor and
celebrate people with disabilities every day, and have more events
planned, especially for October, Disability Employment Awareness Month.
